Getting to the Riverside Theater / Ryan Adams (now with Madison update)

brettac1

I'm going to the Ryan Adams show tomorrow at the Riverside, travelling from the north (near Wausau). What is the best way to get there with all the work being done on the Marquette Interchange? For instance, will I encounter any difficulties if I follow this map?

I'm not overly familiar with that area, so any help would be appreciated.

The map seems fine. I have never gotten off at any of the interchange exits that are on your directions-it seems a tad confusing toward the end there. Although if you don't want to mess around with the Marquette Interchange at all, I would suggest just getting off at either 35th or 27th Street, head north until you hit Wisconsin Ave and turn right. Then, if you go over the river, you've gone too far.

By the way, I'm originally from Kronenwetter (just west of Elderon), so I essentially take that same way to and from Milwaukee all the time. Never been to Elderon though. Have a good time.

yes, you will have trouble going that way. theres a much easier way:

once you get on 94 east and continue onto 794 towards lake michigan, get off on van buren st., turn left, go to wisconsin ave, and head back west (left). its only about 5 blocks backtracking, but it is the easiest, shortest route.

however, depending on when you will be driving into downtown, you may want to take sidestreets.

i have lived near downtown for 5 years, so I can help you out with anything you need. PM me and we can discuss the best route for ya!

You'll have a lot of trouble using that map, as that exit doesn't exist at the moment. I agree with Menotti essentially... I'd stay straight from 94E onto 794 and get off at Van Burun, however, if you're looking for a place to park, I'd turn left onto Michigan St then go four blocks until you hit Water St. and turn left, there's a parking structure on the right side that's only a couple blocks walk north and then a block west over the river to the theater. Good Luck!

Brett - have fun, I really wish I could go with you - I was listening to Cold Roses on the way home tonight.

Two things to keep in mind. On top of everyday Milwaukee traffic, the Brewers are at home and playing a road team that draws well, also, if you are taking 41 down, through Oshkosh and Fond du Lac there is a lot of construction between the two cities and it can get backed up there pretty good around 3-5. So leave in plenty of time. Just a heads up and enjoy the show.

I wish you could go too, man. I'm shuffling the entire catalog right now, and I listened to Easy Tiger at work today and then Cold Roses on the way home myself.

I would guess he'll start at around 8:30-8:45. He never starts on time.

Thanks for the tip on 41. I think the earliest we're going to be able to leave is 3:45, maybe we'll take 39 instead and hook up with 94 that way.

Ryan played 17 songs and for 80 minutes tonight, and cut a solo version of "Sylvia Plath" due to the audience. That is lame. I'm not sure it's even worth going tomorrow night for me.

Ryan is one of my very favorites, but I wish I would have just went to see The National on Friday night at the Riverside instead. It's ridiculous that a guy that's written like 200 songs plays for 80 minutes, especially considering that he doesn't even have an opener. The $25 tickets are like a rip-off (hey, that's one of the 200 songs!).

It's possible that you could be late enough to avoid it, but especially with the Brewer game, if there's even a hint of a traffic situation on I-94, get off the freeway and drive downtown on Wisconsin Avenue or Blue Mound Road / Wisconsin Avenue.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Yeah, that is usually just closed on weekends. However, if for some reason you can not get to 794 east, you can take the ramp to 43 north (towards Green Bay) and then get off on Kilbourn (the Kilbourne tunnel that goes under the court house). Take Kilbourn to Plankinton. Then right on Plankinton (you have to go right anyways because the Kilbourn bridge is closed). Take Plankinton (which becomes 2nd street when you are heading south) past Wisconsin. The Grand Ave shopping mall parking garage is right there and is about 2 blocks from The Riverside.

Also, if you park in the Grand Ave stucture and stop and purchase something in the Grand Avenue, I believe you can get your parking validated. The east end of the Grand Ave Mall is kitty corner from The Riverside.

I think what I'm going to do (thanks to the help from Menotti and brewcrewman17) is take the Van Buren exit (left), past the I-43 N Green Bay exit, and then take another left on Wisconsin Ave., and according to Menotti be able to park on the street for free after 7:00. That sound like it will work well?

I think it's 6pm actually. And yeah you should be able to park on the street but you will most likely have to walk a few blocks to get to the Riverside. My recommendation is to park on Michigan (runs parallel to Wisconsin - one block south). There's not much happening south of Wisconsin Ave so it will be easier to find a spot.

Homer - would I be best off finding a parking structure on Wisconsin Ave. (like they are in abundance)?

Things like this make me very glad I live in a one street town. These trips always confuse me and/or lead to near panic attacks.

There are not a whole lot of parking structures near the Riverside right on WI avenue. But as you are going up WI ave, take a left on 2nd street (2 lights past the riverside) and there will be a parking structure right there (on your right). It's about a 2 block walk from there.

Patrick425, is that the huge parking structure connected to the Grand Avenue Mall? I was going to suggest that one; the mall is right across the street from the Riverside and the structure is right behind the mall.

Yeah, there is a structure on Plankinton Ave behind the mall. (Riverside is on the corner of Plankinton and Wisco)

exit Van Buren, head west on Wisco, left on Plankinton and it's pretty much right there on your right. Or you can take a right on Plankinton and there is a structure about half a block down on your left - never parked there though so I can't vouch for it.

Having lived about seven blocks from the theater I think it's an easy place to find, but I can see coming from out of town how it might be intimidating. Milwaukee isn't all that bad compared to most other major cities and downtown is really safe so no worries (just take normal big city precautions like removing face plate on car stereo, don't leave anything of value in plain site inside the vehicle, etc.). If we are confusing you, it's just that there are 90 different ways to get to the same place.

Yes, that is the one. And, like I said, I believe if you purchase something at the GAM, you can get your parking validated.

So I have to buy something in order to park there? Or can I just pay and park there?

Brett - I expect a detailed song-by-song review before you go to sleep!!

It shouldn't be too hard if he only plays 17 songs (and last night he actually only played 15, the initial setlist I saw was incorrect). Heck, if that's the case I'll be home by 1:00.

No, you don't have to buy anything. But, if you wanted to save a few bucks, if you just stop into Walgreens or some other store in the mall and make a purchase, I think they will validate your parking if you ask....at least they use to.
