Alex Rodriguez to the Cubs? (ESPN article)

I'm just talking offense and I'm just talking potential. If Weeks forgets what he did since August and the rest of them regress they'll be much worse. I happen to think the opposite will happen. The wildcards are DeRosa and Hardy. DeRose is 32 and having a career year. Odds are he regresses a bunch next year. Hardy can't get on base to save his life - if he improves in that area it will even things out between those two.

Yes, defensively the Cubs are much better with or without ARod.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

A couple of things to remember:

1: The EARLIEST the new owner will be announced, will be sometime around the GM meeting in December. My guess is...sometime after the new yr. The two major questions is this....1: Will MLB accept the new owner, knowing his first possible move would set a precident? 2: Would ARod remain a free agent till at least January (which is where I expect when the new owner is announced)?

2: What fols have forgotten is this: the Yankees (coughsSteinbrenner/Cashmancoughs) have said that if ARod opts out of his contract---which is virtually guarantee, barring a miracle---then the Yankees are "threw with him." And IMO, there are three spots I could see ARod ending up in.....Boston/ChC/ and LA Angels. I doubt he goes to Boston, because quite frankly everytime he would go back to NY, he would be harass merciless. I could see ARod going to LAA. That would be an beautiful irony. The best player in the game, playing for the ONE TEAM that has the Yankees numbers. That would be sweet.

3: ARod cannot be promised, or have it in his contract in any form of language, that he is to have a stake in the organization. Plain and simple. This would a "wink wink" deal. And that is the kind of deal that MLB is worried about. If he wants a stake in the org, he would have to buy one a stake, AFTER he retires. And before people think this would destroyed the Cubs, for yrs...just remember, at the half time of ARods contract, ARam, DLee, Carlos Zambrano (unless he gets another long term deal), Lilly, Marquis, DeRosa, contracts would be off the books. And unless the Cubs make another "major move" or two, I don't see an ARod hurting the Cubs, even if they backload it.

Just my POV.

I posted this on page one:

NYY are really unlikely to let A-Rod go, as it's not like they have money problems. Sure, Ca$hman made the 'We won't re-negotiate with him if he opts out' comment but that too is simply him trying to play hardball. Plus then when A-Rod opts out, if he heads elsewhere, Ca$hman can claim he went above and beyond the call of duty - and further than he was at first willing to go - in order to save face (and perhaps his job).

For an update on the situation (and a relevant one at that), read the linked Ken Rosenthal article near the bottom of page 1.

Soriano

DeRosa

A-Rod

Lee

Ramierez

Would easily be the best in baseball (and be absolutely brutal).

Weeks

Hardy

Braun

Fielder

Hart

Is potentially lethal.....I still think the Cubs would have them by a nose due to ARod but it's not by a landslide or anything.

I do love the Brewers 1-5 hitters. It is very lethal and very young. Im a huge A-Rod fan, and I just hope he plays anywhere besides NY and Chicago. Anywhere else is fine by me.

I really doubt A-Rod is going to go small market after playing in New York, personally.

As an aside...I've heard the suggestion of moving Braun to LF multiple times. Does anyone know if that is even a remote possibility? If I'm not mistaken, he's been always playing 3B, that I'm aware of.

Not sure what you're asking specifically, but Braun was a SS upon arrival at U of Miami, then was moved to 3B, and has played there since. The LF notion comes primarily from the fact that it's where poor fielders generally end up if they can't hack it anywhere else. Is that what you were wondering about?
