Sheets - Hamstring strain. Rotation Now (Latest: Sheets a no-go for Sunday)

lcbj68c
Why do I somehow fear a start by Vargas? With the following justification: "We needed to rest our best starters for the playoffs" replied Yost on why he didn't use Suppan, Gallardo, or Villanueva in the one game playoff. "I didn't have too many options. If we start one of those guys, then who pitches games 1, 2 or 3 of the divisional series?"

This is priceless. In fact, new sig.

thats my guess, if he is going to want a big contract at the end of next year he better spend the winter getting in better shape and taking care of himself.
I've often wondered about Big Ben's worth ethic - and this might be the issue that finally puts it over the top for me. He is so injury prone it just seems statistically impossible. Does he have a poor genetic make up? Or does he not prepare himself for the riggers of a 162 game season?

Have you ever seen Ben show up for spring training a think "Man, he really looks like he is in great shape?" To me, Ben is starting to come across as a pitcher with all the talent in the world - and little effort to harness it all.

I first started wondering about his work ethic a few years back when listening to his lackadaisical attitude towards hitting. He always uses the same "They pay me to pitch not hit" line. How about saying you have been busting your butt trying to become the best player you can be? Fact is, a hitting pitcher can really help his team out. And Ben has always just scoffed it off as though he was too good to worry about that.

Why wouldn't that attitude translate into everything he does?

I know we can't trade him. And I know he will be key (again) to any success we have next year. But I wouldn't touch this guy with a 5 year contract with somebody elses money.

I am just really frustrated to have our season always hinge on him.

Sheets a no-go for Sunday

By Tom Haudricourt

Saturday, Sep 22 2007, 02:03 PM

Atlanta - In what hardly qualified as shocking news, right-hander Ben Sheets will not start Sunday for the Brewers due to lingering soreness in his strained left hamstring.

Sheets did some light throwing in the outfield Saturday before the Brewers' game against Atlanta and still felt discomfort in the hamstring he strained warming up for the second inning Tuesday night in Houston.

Manager Ned Yost said left-hander Chris Capuano will start in Sheets' place.

"(Sheets) still felt it," said Yost. "There's no sense pushing it."

Yost said he would not alter the scheduled rotation in which Sheets is scheduled to make his next start Friday at home against San Diego. Instead, he will wait to see if Shets recovers in time for that start.

Capuano (5-12, 5.21) was removed from the starting rotation in mid-August after the Brewers lost his last 16 outings. He has made four relief outings since, all of which the Brewers lost (Capuano was charged with two of those losses).

"Sheets to shut it down for the rest of the year"

Breaking News---From the Milwaukee Clubhouse

Monday, September 24, 5:30 P.M.

Milwaukee- The slight chance of Milwaukee ace Ben Sheets making another start this week against the recently snake-bitten Padres, has been washed away in a sea of Barbasol. Sheets, in an apparent bizare shaving incident, came away with what was described as a 4mm laceration to the left "jaw area." When informed about the injury team offficials immediately had Sheets throw off the mound, but he shut it down after only 3 pitches.

Pitching coach Mike Maddux explained, "He could feel it when he pumped it up to 60%, there's no use in pushing it."

An understandabley dejected Sheets added, "I'd hate to go out there a pitch when I'm not 100%, we'll just take it day by day and hopefully when it's fully healed so I can take this Mickey Mouse band-aid off, we'll be ready to fire away again."

When asked how Sheets could be doing such a dangerous activity while rehabbing his slightly stained left hamstring, Doug Melvin added, " Benny is such a warrior, he came in early today to get his fantasy football team in order and just be here to encourage the guys. When everyone suited up I guess he needed a shower and it just spiraled downward from there."

Yes, it appears Sheets and the Brewers just can't catch a break this year.

More to come after the game----
