About Search Tags (old Major League forum thread)

Most of you have probably noticed that Yuku's search tag function has been activated. This is a really neat feature that'll go a long way toward helping members locate information on the forum.

Once we start collectively getting the hang of this, tag information and guidelines will be rolled into the existing site FAQ structure. Questions and suggestions posted to this thread are welcome.

Here's what you need to know to get started:

  • Search tags can be added to (or deleted from) threads by either the person starting the thread or by a moderator.
  • Tags can be applied to a thread by placing keywords in the "Search Tags" field at the bottom of the Yuku post editor. To adjust a thread's tags 'after the fact', hit the edit link at the top or bottom of the thread's initial post.
  • Please try not to create a tag that's similar to something already on the list. For example, we already have a 'yost' tag, so we wouldn't need a 'nedly' tag.

Also, rather than creating tags for players on other teams or for the individual teams themselves, try to use divisional tags: 'nleast', 'nlcentral', 'nlwest', 'aleast','alcentral', 'alwest'. Please do not tag Brewer-related threads with 'nlcentral'.

If you feel a thread is tag-worthy and doesn't fit within a current category, go ahead and tag it.

  • A tag of two or more words is possible as long as it's followed by a comma in the tag field.
  • Don't be too afraid of goofing things up. That's how we all learn. Moderators can do clean-up if necessary.

--------------------------------------

CHANGES:

  • Item above about sticking to lowercase is eliminated; lowercase is the only way Yuku displays tags, anyway.
  • Multiple word tag verbiage changed; they do exist.
  • Added guideline about trying to use divisional tags.

I think one of the things we're going to have to do is strike a balance between not having enough tags and having too many tags. We'll learn that over time. Since this thread is likely to be temporary until members, moderators, and staff learn what's best -- and since it's stickied -- we probably don't need to tag it.

We recently found out that Yuku limits us to displaying 50 tags per forum. Complicating that is the fact that rather than giving recent tags priority, new tags 'wait in line' until old tags are manually removed.

For now, we've decided to try not tagging players on other teams, and also not tagging the names of other teams. Those items can be tagged by the division that player/team is in. For the moment, I've left in the 'bonds' tag. And 'dessens' is still there because he was just recently cut.

Within these parameters, don't totally fear creating a new tag. 'aleast' and 'alwest', for instance, should be added when topics pertaining to those divisions come up. And if a tag isn't showing, it's not like it's completely lost.

Moderators will come by periodically and do clean-up. Please don't feel offended if there's an 'edited by' on the bottom of your thread-starting post. We're still trying to get this system down pat and trying to work within its limitations.

By the way, any suggestions on tag management are welcome. Feel free to reply to this thread. Also, keep in mind that the guidelines in this thread are fluid. We'll likely be continuing to adjust them as needed.

In Sunday's game chat, ransom gave us hope that we could have more than 50 tags. He said the number was chosen arbitrarily and that the 'guess' was that nobody would ever need that many. I'd say we do. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

In the meantime, we now have a 'formerbrewers' tag. Because we were at 51 tags, I lumped dessens, molitor, lezcano, and yount into that tag.

If or when we're given a higher tag capacity, I (or one of the other mods) will be glad to 'restore' some of the individual tags.

I'll follow up on this with ransom later this week.

I removed the tag from the Offerman thread (offermanmelee) because we were over the 50-tag limit and there didn't appear to be another tag to consolidate the thread into. I'm noting this here because I'd be glad to re-tag the thread if our limit can be increased. It may pay to use a tag like 'fight', which is another one that was removed recently to create more space. I also rolled the new Cubs and Cardinals tags into the nlcentral tag.

We're at 49 tags right now. I PMed ransom about an hour ago to follow up on this issue.

I really wanted a Melvin tag for the new Melvin thread. Because we're so filled up, I created 'frontofficeownership' and combined Melvin with the old 'attanasio' tag. We can use this for any of our front office people.

Some more consolidations:

'booing' and 'autographs' are now combined into 'fanissues'.

'streaks' has been rolled into 'feats' to cover the addition of another thread.

'greenies' is now 'drugssupplements' to cover any future drug/supplement threads.

49 tags and counting. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

This thread got lost partially lost in the shuffle when I eliminated the 'bonds' tag.

Bonds guilty of more than one cheating method?

If the tag limit can be increased, I think it'd be cool to put back the 'cheating' tag. It's still tagged under the very broad 'nlwest'.

More tags eliminated to make room. These threads can be re-tagged if capacity increases.

'spurling' (changed to 'formerbrewers')

Gross called up, Spurling DFA'd

'ballparks
Coors Field Effect?
I miss County Stadium

drugssupplements
Amphetamines
48 tags and counting. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I heard some hopeful news today from Kristin. She says that she's requested that the tag limit be increased to 100 and that the increase might come with a push later in the week. (I'd like an unlimited number of tags, but we ought to be able to work with 100.)

It'd be nice if my next post to this thread announces that we've started to put tags back and that it's being unstickied. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Threads that can be re-tagged when there's more room:

ESPN: The Face of the Franchise [espn]

kenny lofton: hall of famer, right? [halloffame]

Official Miller Park Food Thread [millerpark]

Note to self: when we can put tags back, 'cheating' can probably be broadened to 'rules' to accommodate other rules-related subjects.

Yuku's next push has been delayed until next week. Hopefully, the increased tag limit is part of that. I'll try to check with Kristin so see if she has confirmation.

I temporarily 'ate' these tags to make more room:

[brewercoaches]

Do you think Mike Maddux should get any blame?

[bullpen]

Has our bullpen been unlucky?

Textbook Bullpen Mismanagement

[chat]

Jim Powell J/S Chat 1:00 Central on Friday

[rookies]

National League Rookie of the Year

Best Offensive Rookie Year in History

Top prospect Justin Upton called up

This should hopefully leave some room for the inevitable new tags that'll pop up with roster additions this weekend.

Once we have room for more tags, we may want to include a [lineup] tag for general and specific batting order discussion. Specific threads might address who bats leadoff or cleanup, etc. Of course, forum rules designate one active general lineup thread at a time.

For reference, this is the old designated lineup thread, now locked.

It's time again...Name your ideal lineup (Designated Lineup Thread)

Because Yuku isn't currently dropping old threads from the end of the forum, it's reasonable and feasible to tag locked threads for those who want to look back. When you click on the tag, so there are no surprises, the lock icon will appear in the thread list.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yuku's tag limit was increased to 100 last night, so I went back and restored a boatload of tags. I think the bottom line is that we have room to grow, but we'll still have to stay away from tags for opposing teams or opposing players.

I think most of the restored tags are self-explanatory, but feel free to ask questions.

Don't be afraid to use the feature. You'll see lots of existing tags that might apply to your thread. If new tags don't turn out to be a fit, we can always adjust later.

The most important thing is that we're not always sitting at the limit. When that happens, we have no clue how many tags might exist but aren't showing up.
