Cubs not happy with the Astros rotation

pretendastronaut

Tal Smith, the Astros interim general manager, called Cubs general manager Jim Hendry to let him know about the switch. Astros manager Cecil Cooper also called Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig in a preemptive move.

That part strikes me as bizarre. Are the Brewers and MLB being notified of whatever pitching decisions the Cub opponents make?

Cliff Floyd is a whiner and one of a number of obnoxious Cubs who, for some reason, seem to me to have an excessively high opinion of their own greatness.

If you think these Cliff Floyd quotes are funny - you should come down to Illinois and listen to the radio. They are not happy down here. I wish I had the time this morning to type some of the gems I heard. For example, "Houston is pretty much giving the Brewers the Division crown."

Yeah, because we are playing Houstons rookies for the next week and a half

The Astros have scored 1 run in two games with Berkman, Lee, Pence, Biggio, Loretta and Wiggenton all in the lineup. That's Houston's A lineup folks. Unless they had Sandy Koufax pitching back to back games the result would have been the same.

The Cubs complaining about it tells me they know they don't have the best team. The other sign the Cubs know they don't have the best team? They celebrated Monday night as if they had wrapped it up.

Oh yeah, and didn't the Brewers just take 2 of 3 from those "battling" Reds?

I assume you mean Wigginton?

Cubs just need to focus on themselves. Seems to me that they are worried about another team. That is probably good for the other team

Is there some sort of unspoken pact in which every team in the NL Central is out to get the Cubs?

I thought the unspoken pact was everyone in and connected to MLB helping the four-letter franchise that has suffered for so, so long. Like with that Corey Hart strike call a few weeks back.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I think people here are reading way too much into this.

The Astros called the Cubs, and then Bud Selig -- so it gets on the newspapers' radar.

The newspapers start jamming microphones in player's faces, and it seems that most of the Cubs players give the typical canned cliches to the effect of "We have to worry about the Cubs"

Cliff Floyd says something to the effect of "It sucks" -- which I think is reasonable, I can certainly understand the Cubs wanting to see Oswalt pitch, but Floyd goes on to recognize Oswalt's situation and even directs God to bless the Oswalts. He questions the Williams move, but then recognizes that the Astros can do what they want.

I don't think Floyd was whining or anything remotely negative. Someone on this board started a "remaining pitchers matchup" so I think it is absolutely fair to wonder about who your rivals play, and hope that they land against the toughest matchups.

On the other hand I expect that the Chicago talk radio is insufferable, but this situation seems to be talk-radio gold.

Clearly, 9 and 1/2 months ago, Oswalt impregnated his wife solely because he thought it would be able to help the Brewers win the division. In turn, Linebrink had a child and a blew some leads in San Diego to get traded here. Gagne got traded to Boston because he knew he would hurt the Brewers chances of winning the division. The Nationals spent most of the year not being very good, solely so they would have an excuse to trade Ray King.

Corey Koskie got a concussion in 2006 so the Brewers could call up Braun in May of 2007 to win the division. The Cardinals swept us at home solely to make it look like they weren't trying to give the Brewers the division, but really, they're in on it to.

Carlos Little Z Zambrano has sucked since August because really he wants the Brewers to win the division. The Pirates took 2 of 3 from both the Brewers and Cubs in their last serieses because they see a reflection of themselves in the Brewers.

Floyd must've forgotten how the Cubs knocked Williams around ( 7IP, 11 H, 6 ER) when they faced him last week. You'd think they'd be happy that we don't face a guy who's been hit pretty hard this year.
"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

I think the Astos called the Cubs and Selig about this because of who the Astos manager is. I can see how this would look form the outside looking in. The Astros have one of the all time great Brewers managing for them, someone who got his start in coaching/managment wiht the Brewers after his playing days, and all of a sudden he puts in two rookies to replace an ace and veteran. If it would have been any other manager doing the exact same thing no one would have thought twice about it since both situations happen all the time.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Let them whine... looks like we get Hudson and Smoltz when we're in Atlanta. They get a couple Pirates nobodies.

Don't bet the house on it. The Braves are basically playing for 82 wins and thats it at this point. So don't be surprised for Cox to limit his starters, especially since Smoltz isn't young anymore.

Cornelius "Cliff" Floyd's comments about the anxieties felt by the fans and his piss dribbling about the Astros pitchers, Zambrano's inability to win in this stretch, Piniella's need to posture in the press about his 3-game margin of confidence, the statistical fall back to earth of their bullpen and starting rotation, the throaty boorishness of the frontrunners among this most frontrunning bunch of fans: It all has The Feel.

I've come to terms with this season for the Brewers. It's like having heard the death rattle and waiting for the light. I think we're in a position to win, but whatever. The team has shown some stones. The young lions have come to play. The manager has played to win. We're in first place with 12 games left in the 2007 season. Not that that's enough for me, but, again, I'm at peace with it.

As for the Cubs? God is just and they never will know peace. But they will know The Feel, the icy-black coldness that starts with a Wuertz grooved fastball, spreads with a tear in a Soriano quad, and ends in their facile mantras about waiting until next year, muttered over the dying sounds of a Wurlitzer. Edit: The Bastards.

You should've seen the whining going on by SOME Cubs fans on nsbb.com last night. Their latest rant was how they would lose what little respect they had left for Ryan Braun if he played Saturday(Yom Kippur). Give me a break. Some were also whining about Hunter Pence not being in the lineup last night. Like he would've made the difference in a 9-1 game?? My favorite though was their comments on the Reds protest of the game Monday night, and how they wouldn't be surprised if Selig did something unprecedented and upheld the appeal because afterall, he is the former owner of the Brewers and wants to see them make the playoffs.

For me, it's one thing if they keep those comments (Floyd, Cubs) in the clubhouse and to themselves, I think we all know that under pressure, pennant race, heated things will happen, guys will say things, etc and its not tne end of the world, consider the souce .. but its another when they make them public, and they bring such a big thing to it, such as having the Astros GM and Coach etc have to call Hendry and MLB.
