Cubs not happy with the Astros rotation

pretendastronaut

Article that went up on the Cubs page tonight;

CHICAGO -- The Cubs don't want Milwaukee to have any edge in the final two weeks of play, and some eyebrows were raised when Houston changed its pitching rotation so rookies Felipe Paulino and Juan Gutierrez would start against the Brewers, not Woody Williams and Roy Oswalt.

Tal Smith, the Astros interim general manager, called Cubs general manager Jim Hendry to let him know about the switch. Astros manager Cecil Cooper also called Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig in a preemptive move.

"He was very professional, and I appreciated the call," Hendry said Tuesday of Smith. "He's an honest guy. I don't think there's anybody sitting at home in Houston orchestrating it, trying to help the Brewers or the Cubs."

However, some of the Cubs weren't happy about the change. Oswalt will miss the start to be with his pregnant wife, who gave birth to the couple's second child on Tuesday. Cooper apparently wanted to look at Paulino over Williams.

"That ticks us off," Cubs outfielder Cliff Floyd said of the switch, "but you can't help family situations. I had one this year [with his father], and Oswalt is having a kid. God bless him and his family.

"I don't understand the Woody Williams deal, but at the same time, I'm not going to question Cecil Cooper's decision to start a rookie. It's their team, and they can do what they want to do.

"At the same time, you'd like everybody to play their guys. Cincinnati was eliminated from the Wild Card [Monday], and they're playing their hearts out, and that's what you want everybody to do.

"I don't think when we go to Cincinnati, they'll say, 'Hey, you all need to win, so we'll sit [Adam] Dunn, [Ken] Griffey and [Edwin] Encarnacion.'"

With 11 games remaining, the Cubs can't fret about anybody else right now.

"We can't concern ourselves with Houston or what anybody else is doing," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We just have to go out and win games."

Said Cubs catcher Jason Kendall: "We've got to worry about ourselves."

To be fair, it's ONE Cub player making statements. And Cliff Floyd is kind of a dork.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I dont think I would be saying anything. I mean missing Woody Williams and his 5 plus ERA isnt really a big deal. Hungry rookies getting their shot at the end of the year arent any worse than an old stiff like Williams. As for Oswalt, its not like he told his wife to have the babies when the Brewers came to town. I would have been disappointed if the same thing happened to the Cubs with Harang down here but not angry.

Yeah Oswalt's wife needs to have a baby on his own time, just hold it in until the offseason!

A team who is out of the race has absolutely no excuse for starting Woody Williams over a young pitcher. You need to play for next season at that point and Williams is not a major part of that team next year.

It wouldnt spurise me if the Oswalts waited till Houston was out of the race. But to suggest that they did that on purpose is crazy.

Is there a difference between this and Harang throwing 10 innings against us and leaving his next start (vs. the Cubs) in the first inning? Not really, just bad luck.

And I thought we were more worried about the Cubs!

Quoth Cliff Floyd:

When you read Floyd's comments, he says he's ticked, but he also acknowledges the Oswalt family situation and acknowledges Cooper's right to choose his starters. It sounds to me like he's 'ticked' because of how things are working out rather than actually crying foul.

As endaround and trwi7 point out, it's not like Woody's been good, anyway. However, when you listen to comments from major league players, there's an absolute tendency to value (and overvalue) veterans. It sounds like Cliff is remembering some other season's Woody Williams.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Yeah, WE would...as fans. The fact that the Cubs players are commenting on this is hilarious/ridiculous.

I agree completely. Fans can complain all they want. For the Cubs players to be talking about this is just wonderful. What a bunch of babies/whiners/poor sports. I hope they think about this all week and continue to lose a few games thinking that there's some greater force working against them! That would be even better than just beating them straight-up.

In addition to Oswalt's absence being legit and Williams' absence being GOOD for the Cubs (as mentioned previously), the Cubs have nothing to complain about. Look at the schedules these last two weeks. Cincy twice, Pitt, and Florida. If they can't win the division with that stretch run, they don't deserve it, anyway. I'd like to hear them complain after the Brewers face Hudson, Smoltz, Young, Maddux, and maybe Peavy.

Is there some sort of unspoken pact in which every team in the NL Central is out to get the Cubs? The implication that the Astros are doing this to help the Brewers and screw over the Cubs is simply asinine.

Absolutely. It's hard to imagine that the Cubs have some Neopolian (ok, sp?) complex given their payroll!

Thank you! I should have consulted the "drunk thread" for the spelling as I attended the game this evening in Houston!
I believe it's actually Napoleon. But congrats on getting drunk. You weren't the guy who ran onto the field in the 9th inning were you?http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif
