Brewers will break attendance record

Thanks to a competitive team on the field, four all-stars and a hot pennant race, the Milwaukee Brewers are expected to break the franchise's record for single-season attendance sometime Wednesday morning.

The current record was set in 2001, when 2,811,041 fans flocked to Miller Park. That was the first year Miller Park was open.

As of Tuesday morning, the Brewers were 4,000 tickets shy of the record. Team officials say that, on average, 3,800 tickets are being sold to the remaining seven home games every 24 hours.

To commemorate the record, team officials will honor the fan who buys ticket number 2,811,042. That fan will be asked to come to the ballpark on Wednesday to receive a game-worn Robin Yount jersey, a Geoff Jenkins game-used bat, a team autographed baseball, four tickets to the 2008 home opener and a Brewers cap.

The Brewers have drawn more than 2 million fans five other times in team history. Besides 2001, the team went over 2 million fans in 2004, 2005, 2006 and in 1983, the season after the Brewers went to the World Series.

The Brewers rank 12th in attendance in Major League Baseball. Ahead of them are franchises in considerably larger markets, such as the two New York franchises, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

I know some may not care, and while the biggest reason for increased attendance is surely the improved quality of the team - the marketing and sales department under Mark A. (esp. this year) deserves a gigantic pat on the back. I can say with certainty that their creativity and flexibility in marketing multiple-game packages, giveaways (the "all-fan" part is enormous - the Cubs still do the "First 10,000..." crap, even for cheapies like hats), and innovative nuances such as what's quoted above have played almost as big a role. Sheer genius to boost the already-high demand for tickets. Just think how many people are going to buy tickets (or more tix) with this as a random prize.

While you can write this off if you want, I think the marketing of this club has been brilliant this year, and there's no coincidence that it's going to end up being a record-setting season.

Let's not only come out in droves, but let's actually give Miller Park a playoff-style atmosphere. Lots of cheering, lots of standing, and lot's of MVP chants. I know I'm going Monday-Thursday--come out for the series against STL---we really have a chance to clobber them.

I'm so mad I have night class Tues and Wed, it's too early to miss them for regular season, but if they make playoffs and I get a hold of tickets, the decision will have been made for me. It would be a blast to be there next week...

Maybe the team should have some blue rally towels for the last homestand. That would create an exciting atmosphere.
That's a great idea. I think the Brewers would be all over that idea. You should forward that message to the team, if you can.

I second that. You really should send that in to the Brewers.

I have to admit I don't like giving fans anything that will obstruct the view of other fans. I am very glad I have never been in the party sections where they hand out all those stupid baloons.

I understand what you mean, especially regarding those thundersticks. However, when my wife and I went to the 2001 WS in Phoenix, they gave everybody white pompom things and it was the coolest thing I've ever seen (before the game) when everyone was shaking them to the beat of the music. Fans didn't use them much during the game itself, except for cheering for plays, etc. But it was very neat. I still have them hanging in our house with other WS memorabilia.

As for towels, it's a good idea but maybe overdone, due to the Twins, Steelers, etc. Maybe we need something else. Otherwise, great idea.

I am going to the game on the 29th against San Diego. I hope the team is still in it by the time they head home for its final homestand. It will be interesting to say the least because if the Brewers are still in it and win the division that day, it will be unforgetable for me. *KNOCKS ON WOOD FEVERISHLY*

That's a great idea although I agree with whoever said white rally towels as those show up better. They did the same thing for the Admirals wen they were in the Calder Cup Finals in 2006 and even though there were only about 7,000 people at the Bradley Center it still looked awesome when everybody was waving their towels during introductions, goals and saves.

Make it white instead of blue...Shows up better.

The players won't be able to see the ball very well.

I don't see what that has to do with anything really. There's nobody in CF to distract a batter so they're not effected. I don't think it would be a huge distraction on defense because they're not going to be waving them constantly.
