Listened to this game as a Brewer warmup today; Power offense active as seemingly always, and with an assist or two from the Suns' defense; Brae Wright cruised through three hitless innings before struggling in the 4th; catcher Andy Bouchie left after a scary injury -- he collapsed behind the plate, apparently from taking a shot from the backswing of a Suns' batter, although play-by-play man Andy Barch didn't quite see exactly what occurred; Bouchie had hit his first home run the prior inning...

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

 

POWER SURGE EARLY ON SUNS

 

The West Virginia Power took a 7-0 lead over the Hagerstown Suns after three and a half innings of Wednesday?s game at Municipal Stadium, and though the Suns came back to make the game interesting, they could not overcome the early deficit as the Power went on to win 8-6.

 

Andy Bouchie?s two-out RBI single in the first inning put the Power on top. West Virginia did most of their damage in the second inning where they scored four runs. Darren Ford drove in the first run on a single. Steve Chapman scored on Marcos Cabral?s throwing error and Chuckie Caufield tripled in the last two runs of the inning. In the third, Ford ripped his second RBI single of the game and Bouchie put the Power ahead 7-0 on a solo home run in the fourth inning.

 

Power lefty Brae Wright held the Suns hitless through three and a third, but the Suns broke out in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on five hits. Stephen King knocked in the first two runs on a single, and he scored later in the inning on Marcos Cabral?s base hit. Chris Marrero?s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning plated Alexis Nunez to bring the Suns within three, until Kenny Holmberg hit a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning. Hagerstown scored in the bottom of the sixth inning on Francisco Guzman?s RBI double. The Suns scored one final time in the ninth inning on Chris Marrero?s groundout but it was too little too late.

 

Wright (2-2) allowed four runs on six hits to earn the victory, E.J. Shanks (3) got the save and Cor Van Allen (0-2) took the loss.

 

Every Power player in the starting lineup hit safely. Kenny Holmberg led the Power with three hits. Chuckie Caufield, Andy Bouchie and Darren Ford all drove in two runs for the Power.

 

The Power improved to 22-8 with the win and the Suns fell to 12-20 with the loss.

 

The Power will continue the four game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium on Thursday night. The Power will start right hander J.T. King (3-0, 0.90) and the Suns will counter with Marco Estrada (1-2, 4.70). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

COLORADO SPRINGS ? Four Colorado Springs pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout on Wednesday morning at Security Service Field as the Sky Sox registered a 2-0 victory over the Nashville Sounds.

 

Nashville (18-15) has dropped eight of its last 10 road contests and suffered its third shutout loss of the season. The Sounds advanced only three runners to second base all morning.

 

Colorado Springs starter Bobby Keppel (1-1) earned his first victory of the season by working 5 2/3 scoreless frames, holding the Sounds to only four hits. Mike Gallo and Matt Herges followed with 2 1/3 hitless relief frames before Ryan Speier worked a 1-2-3 ninth, including a pair of strikeouts, to earn his team-leading fifth save of the year for the Sky Sox.

 

The Sounds finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and grounded into three inning-ending double plays in the contest.

 

Charles Thomas went 2-for-4 for the Sounds to account for half of the club?s morning hit total after opening his Nashville career with only one hit in his initial 13 at-bats.

 

Colorado Springs grabbed a 1-0 lead with a two-out rally against Sounds starter Tim Dillard in the bottom of the second inning. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Alexis Gomez doubled and scored when Jayson Nix followed with an RBI triple off the center field wall. Nix, the younger brother of former Sounds outfielder Laynce Nix, attempted to make it an inside-the-park home run but was thrown out at the plate on a relay by Charles Thomas and Callix Crabbe.

The Sky Sox doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the third with another two-out knock as Clint Barmes (2-for-4) scored on an Ian Stewart run-scoring single against Dillard.

 

Dillard (0-3) took a hard-luck loss for Nashville following a quality start and remains winless through his first seven career Triple-A outings. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five batters over six innings of action.

 

The teams continue the series with another 11:35 a.m. CT morning matchup on Thursday. Nashville right-hander Chris Oxspring (2-1, 2.01) will man the bump to face Sky Sox right-hander Jorge De Paula (2-0, 3.21).

Late Rally By Mobile Sinks Stars

 

Jarred Ball?s two-out, two-run single capped a three-run eighth inning rally that propelled Mobile to a 6-5 comeback victory over Huntsville Wednesday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The BayBears have won the first three games of the series to improve to 16-17 on the season and 10-8 on the road, while the Stars slumped to 14-17 overall and 7-11 at home.

 

Huntsville took a 4-3 lead into the eighth before a ground rule double by Carlos Gonzalez drove in Wilkin Castillo to tie the game and move Mark Reynolds, who had been intentionally walked, to third base. Reynolds has six hits and has drawn three walks and has not been retired in the two games he has played in during the series. Ball, a .164 hitter with five RBIs entering the game, lined a 1-1 Jeff Housman offering over a leaping second baseman Hernan Iribarren into right field to deliver both runners and drive in his second and third runs of the game. Housman was charged with the loss, his first, after allowing three runs on two hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings of work.

 

Lou Palmisano and Guilder Rodriguez singled off A.J. Shappi in the eighth but were left stranded when Adam Heether struck out and Iribarren flied out. Dustin Glant took over in the ninth and gave up a pinch-hit double to Carlos Corporan that was followed by a double by Mel Stocker, who broke an 0-for-18 drought and cut the visitors lead to one. Steve Sollmann moved Stocker to third base with a sacrifice bunt but he was left there when Yohannis Perez grounded out to Reynolds at third and Palmisano fanned to end the game. Glant earned his second save of the series and fourth of the season. The run was the only allowed by the BayBears bullpen over 9 1/3 innings in the series.

 

Mobile tallied three times against starter Adam Pettyjohn in the second inning on run-scoring hits by Ball and Ronnie Merrill and a throwing error by Rodriguez. Pettyjohn has allowed a three-spot in three of his last four starts and has thrown scoreless baseball in the other 13 innings in those starts. The veteran southpaw gave up five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five over his five innings of work and remains winless in four starts at home.

 

Palmisano?s two-run home run in the sixth tied the game and the Stars took their first lead later in the frame on Iribarren?s second run-producing single of the day in his first game with two runs batted in. Rodriguez had his first two-hit game of the season and scored a run.

Wasn't he an allstar last year? His second half went beyond an implosion. For the ultimate pitcher's park, in a pitcher's league, his final numbers weren't very good last year. He seems to be doing much better for now in relief

That's a good call, and I believe that is roughly when both Braun and Gallardo were bumped up a year ago.

 

And remember a year ago we were all wondering the same thing with Gallardo, who was also dominating the FSL (although I'm not sure to the same level Inman is). Inman probably has five starts before the June draft, and he currently has just over 42 innings pitched. Gallardo got bumped up in the 75-80 inning range, and if Inman averages 5-6 innings per outing between now and the draft, which doesn't seem to be a problem for him, he too will be in that 70-80 inning range.

 

And the move could correspond with someone like Manny Parra getting bumped up to AAA. As I noted a week ago, Parra already has roughly 160 innings at the AA level, dating back a few years now, and is doing a much better job this year limiting baserunners. I think he has more than proven his worth at AA, although him being there may have more to do with a lack of a spot to put him at AAA.

 

Between now and early June more than likely there is going to be some kind of pitching transaction that goes down at the upper levels, whether it be due to injury, ineffectiveness or something else.

 

Sidenote: Gamel and Gillespie need to get it going. I know it's not easy to hit in the FSL, but I really didn't expect either one to have this much trouble. Still early? Absolutely, but we're a month in now, and even Cain appears to be finding his stroke.
