How many wins will it take to beat the Cubs? (Merged: Record to reach playoffs)

And That

I thought that I read somewhere that we won the playoff coin toss or something? No?
We won the toss against StL, but not the Cubs. Then there are a whole set of scenerios with WC ties against various clubs

Well Miller Park, considering the schedules....I would have to say that would be the Cubs.

The Cubs going 6-2 last week was absolutely huge, coupled with Sheets losing Friday pretty much sealed the deal in my mind.

This is kind of how I feel. That loss at Miller with Sheets going was tough, coupled with the fact that we are two down in the win column. But then I look at the standings and yes, we are only one back. If the Cubs somehow struggle against a Reds team (almost did last night) and a Pirates team, both of which have played over .500 since August 1st, and the Brewers can finally show us something on the road, they will be right there.

Lets say, the Brewers go 5-2 on this road trip, and the Cubs go 4-2 before they hit the road, here are the standings:

Chicago W82 L74

Milwaukee W81 L74

Wouldn't you feel good being a 1/2 game back with 7 home games left? The Cubs have then 6 left against the Marlins in Florida, and the Reds in Cincy. Realisticly, you are right there.

But that goes with saying, this series is a "must sweep" in that winning 3 of 4 in Atlanta would be a tall order. Or coming home and running the table would be an even taller order.

Key now is that the Cubs must start to cough up a couple or three would be delightful. However, with the way they have been pulling them out at the right times, makes me get that sick feeling in my stomach lately.

That one-game playoff @ Wrigley could be real fun...

I thought that I read somewhere that we won the playoff coin toss or something? No?

The Brewers won the coin toss against the Cardinals, but lost the coin toss against the Cubs. There were also a bunch of other coin tosses to determine who would host a playoff if the Brewers were to tie for the wild card (Colorado, Arizona, LA, San Diego, etc.). The thread where all of that was discussed is here.

Over an 11 game sample anything can happen so put me down for I don't know. The Cubs are as like to lose 8 games as to win 8 games in my opinion, they are a .500 team playing against teams who have given them trouble in the past.

You don't seem liek the kind of guy who'd pay attention to small sample, team vs. team splits for a season.

I have to admit, that after Friday's game, I really thought "season over"...I know I know, what was I thinkiing! But being tied now in the loss column...the deal is certainly not sealed! I think that yesterday's Cub comeback win was HUGE! I really thought that Cincy was gonna win...it was a big letdown. We would have been in the driver's seat (for the time being, at leasthttp://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif ), with the Crew a game less in the loss column. Even though technically, we're 1 game behind...I still look at it as really being tied, since we're tied in the loss column. But, I always had a different way of looking at thingshttp://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif

After last night's game I think the Cubs are going to finish the season 9-2. I thought they were going to finish 8-4 before last night's game but now I just don't see that happening. I would be very surpised if they lost a game at Wrigley again this year.

11-2 for the Crew to force a 1 game playoff.

I certainly am not encouraged, but the Cubs still have to face Harang and Gorzelony during this homestand. I would say that Cubs manage to find away to lose two games during their homestand. Unfortunately, I feel like the Brewers need to be perfect, a nearly impossible task, to survive this week, let alone next week.

people are talking here like we are down 3 or 4 games and its over while its only 1 game. The cubs didn't play that great yesterday and now have zambrano and lilly on the mound on 3 days rest. Lets see what they can do.

I am really hoping this decision to run those guys out on short rest backfires. Both of them were over 100 pitches in their last starts, so its not like they are doing this after a short start.

I was under the impression that in a tie for the division, whoever wins the head-to-head is the division winner. A playoff game is only when the head-to-head is tied or for the wildcard. If that's true, which I'm 99% positive it is, and the Cubs have the better head-to-head record (which again I'm 99% sure), then the Brewers need to be one up.

That is what I am saying above too. If Gorzelanny and Harang at least beat the Cubs (and maybe one more somewhere this week), the Brewers don't have to be perfect. 5-2 or 4-3 on the road trip would work if the Cubs go 4-2 or 3-3 respectively. We just have to hope the Cubs aren't perfect this week. If that is the case, then they will win it. Who knows though, they could go belly up in Florida and Cincy, just don't expect it....

that is not true. It is like that in the nba and nfl, but in baseball there is a 1 game playoff. Due to the already performed coinflip the game would be at Wrigley.

I didn't believe you so I looked it up. You're right because the Cubs and Brewer have a lower winning percentage than the Wild Card winner. If both teams had a better record, I would have been right. Very interesting and fortunate for us.

I think what happens tonight will dictate how the cubs will finish. As we have seen...this team really goes as zambrano goes. When he was struggling in August the cubs cooled off...now that hes pitching good again, they are heating back up ( the addition of a healthy soriono has a lot to do with it as well) However, I think if he has a blowup start tonight..which he is certainly capable of... it could end up being more influential then just 1 loss in the overall outcome of this pennant chase. So lets all hope zambrano loses his head and starts flippin the bird at his home crowd.

This dude seems to think the Brewers path to playoffs is going to be "easy." At least, that's what the link said. He has some points to ponder: the Cubs 11-17 combined against the remainder of their opponents; Milton Bradley is going to be out for SD; 2 games left this year.
