Manny Parra really needs to be promoted sometime soon. He's done his time in AA, and he's healthy. He could be useful to the Brewers as a lefty out of the pen later on this year.

Manny Parra or Tim Dillard could really be useful to replace Dessens. I understand Elmer's role is important, and you don't want a prospect in the role, but man, it's hard to watch him. He's always been crappy, and is only getting worse

I used to think that way about not wanting a prospect in the long role, and maybe if you can't find a manager who can breakout of old habits you want to go with that wisdom, but If you have 2 guys who can give you long innings there is no reason not to have a prospect in that role.

I've always liked Dillard, so I wouldn't mind him or Jackson in the long role w/Villanueva. Neither is really a big prospect, and both likely have long term roles in the bullpen at best. But both could contribute quite a bit if not overexposed

Sounds' Skid Hits Six Following 11-9 Loss

 

SALT LAKE CITY ? The Nashville Sounds? losing streak reached six games on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field as the club came up on the short end of an 11-9 loss to the Salt Lake Bees in the second game of a four-game series.

 

Nashville (18-19) has lost 12 of its last 14 road contests and saw the opponent plate the winning run in its final turn at the plate for the third straight contest and for the fourth time in six games during the current road trip.

 

With the loss, the Sounds fell a season-high three games out of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

 

The game was a back-and-forth battle that saw three lead changes before Salt Lake broke a 9-9 tie with a pair of runs against Grant Balfour in the bottom of the eighth inning.

 

The Sounds took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first frame when Laynce Nix (3-for-4) belted a two-run homer off Bees starter Henry Bonilla, the outfielder?s second longball in three rehab games with Nashville.

After Nix upped the visitors? lead to 3-0 with a third-inning RBI double, Salt Lake exploded for six runs against R.A. Dickey in the bottom of the frame to grab a 6-3 lead using four hits and a pair of Sounds errors.

 

Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez, who finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run, pulled Nashville within 6-4 in the fourth when he plated Vinny Rottino with a two-out RBI double.

 

Brad Nelson tied the contest at 6-6 in the fifth with a two-run double before scoring the go-ahead run later in the frame on a Drew Anderson sacrifice fly.

 

Callix Crabbe extended the Nashville to 8-6 in the sixth with a solo homer off Bees reliever Matt Wilhite before Salt Lake came back again against Dickey, playing three runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 9-8 advantage. All three runs scored with two outs in the frame, including the tying and go-ahead scores on a Brandon Wood two-run single.

 

Chavez evened the score in the eighth with his second homer of the year, a one-out solo shot to right off Steven Shell. The Bees responded with yet another two-out scoring rally, this time against Balfour. With two on and two out, Wood drew a walk to load the bases for Mike Elyward, who followed with a go-ahead two-run single to right for the Bees.

 

Jason Bulger took over on the hill for Salt Lake and retired the Sounds in order in the top of the ninth, including two consecutive strikeouts to end the contest, to earn his first save of the year.

 

Shell (1-0) backed into the victory for the Bees after blowing a save in his one inning of work. Balfour (0-1), who allowed two runs on two hits over his 1 2/3 frames of action, took the loss for Nashville.

 

Dickey worked six innings for the Sounds and allowed a season-high nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits.

 

The Sounds look to get back on the winning track when the teams continue the series with a 7:35 p.m. CT meeting on Monday evening. Right-hander Tim Dillard (0-3, 3.35) will take the hill for Nashville in search of his first career Triple-A victory. Salt Lake will counter with right-hander and former Milwaukee Brewer farmhand and big leaguer Pedro Liriano (1-4, 7.59).

Stars Keep on Swinging and Slugging in Sunday Win

 

Brendan Katin drove in four runs to back the solid pitching of Manny Parra, as Huntsville downed Carolina 10-2 Sunday afternoon in the second of a five-game set at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The Stars earned their fourth straight win to climb to 18-17 and move within a half-game of front-running Tennessee in the North Division, while the Mudcats slipped to 14-23 overall and 7-10 at home. Huntsville has won the last eight games between the two teams dating back to a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on July 22.

 

Carolina scored the game?s first run in the first inning on a triple by Grant Psomas and a Parra wild pitch. Psomas hit a sinking line drive to left field that got past a diving Ulyses Davenport and was backed up by Steve Moss on the warning track. It was the fourth time in seven starts that Parra has been scored on in the first inning and the eleventh time in their last 12 games that the Stars have allowed the first run or runs of the contest.

 

The Stars struck for three runs in the third on a run-scoring ground out by Guilder Rodriguez and successive two-out, run-producing hits by Mike Carlin and Katin. A walk to Parra and a sacrifice bunt by Hernan Iribarren were key factors in the rally. Huntsville added a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a Carlin sacrifice fly and a one-out single by Katin that plated Rodriguez, who had singled and stolen second base. Mudcats? starter Gaby Hernandez, the third ranked prospect in the Marlins organization according to Baseball America, was charged with five runs on six hits over five frames and suffered his fourth loss of the season. The right-hander walked three and struck out three and remains winless since April 23.

 

Scott Nestor took over in the sixth and yielded five runs on a run-scoring single by Iribarren, a bases loaded walk to Carlin, a two-run double by Katin and a run-scoring ground out by Steve Moss, who went hitless in five at-bats. Katin and Rodriguez each collected three hits for a second straight game, while Iribarren and Rodriguez each scored two times.

 

Parra left after six innings and earned his fourth win of the season by yielding just one run on six hits. He struck out a season-high eight, walked two and won for the first time in three tries on the road. Robert Hinton worked two innings, giving up a run without a hit and Joe Thatcher retired all three hitters he faced in the ninth.

Zach Braddock didn't give up any runs in his first two outings, but he did have 8 walks. In the 27.1 innings since those first two games, 40 k's and 5 walks! Seems like when he has given up a run, the opposition has just been able to string together a couple hits around one of those few walks. Watched him pitch today, and he was well in control through all 5 innings. He has also been fouled off quite a bit which I'm sure is running up his pitch count keeping his innings fewer.

'HOPPERS SURGE LATE TO BEAT POWER

 

The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored the final eight runs in the final three innings of Sunday afternoon?s game at Appalachian Power Park and defeated the West Virginia Power 9-3 to take their second game of the series.

 

West Virginia took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Darren Ford?s solo home run, his third of the year, and Chuckie Caufield?s sacrifice fly which scored Brent Brewer. The Grasshoppers cut the lead in half on Jacob Blackwood?s RBI single in the third. West Virginia plated their final run of the game on Caufield?s run-scoring single in the bottom of the third.

 

Greensboro began their comeback in the seventh inning. Greg Burns knocked in Daniel Garcia on a sacrifice fly to plate the first run of the inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Chris Coghlan hit a ground ball to Power second baseman Kenny Holmberg. Holmberg had trouble fielding the ball and it went into right field. Chuckie Caufield?s throw into second base hit field umpire Dave Soucy and the ball went into left field allowing the tying run to score. Coghlan scored during the next at bat on Jacob Blackwood?s base hit to give Greensboro the lead.

 

The ?Hoppers added four runs in the eighth inning. Garcia and Greg Burns put together back-to-back RBI singles before Coghlan drove a run in on a groundout and Blackwood finished the inning with an RBI single, his third of the game. An errant throw from Brent Brewer allowed the Grasshoppers to score their final run in the ninth.

 

Brad Stone (2-3) earned the victory, and J.T. King (3-1) was tagged with the loss. Power lefty Zach Braddock allowed just a run on five hits through five innings and struck out nine batters, giving him 21 strikeouts in two starts against Greensboro.

 

The Power fell to 24-10 with the loss and the Grasshoppers improved to 24-13 with the win. The first three batters in the Power batting order, Ford, Brewer and Michael Brantley, recorded two hits a piece.

 

The Power will continue the four game series against Greensboro at First Horizon Park on Tuesday night. The Power will start left hander Luis Ramirez (1-0, 5.06) and the Grasshoppers will counter with left hander Graham Taylor (4-1, 3.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM (6:00 Central).

Manny Parra's line at AA (since 2004):

 

12-8, 3.43 ERA, 32 games (all starts), 170.2 IP, 183 H, 166 K, 39 BB

 

He's given up only 4 HR in that span, all during the 2005 season, in which he gave up 111 hits in 91 innings of work (his longest, yet worse season statistically at the AA level).

 

The Brewers need to find a way to bump this young man up to AAA. Of all of the pitching prospects in the system, I would love to know what Manny is throwing stuff-wise more than anyone else.

I agree Colby. Does he still throw 95, or try to throw 6 pitches? We haven't heard much about his stuff in 2 or 3 years.
