Lorenzo Cain has raised his average to a decent level, but since he's not walking or hitting for power, he's turned into the outfield version of Alcides Escobar. On the other hand, Cole Gillespie is walking plenty and hitting for ok power---he's a couple of 3 hit games a way from a .850 OPS.

Dillard Goes The Distance For 1st Triple-A Win

SALT LAKE CITY ? Tim Dillard picked up his first career Triple-A victory by working a complete game in the Nashville Sounds? 4-3 victory over the Salt Lake Bees on Monday evening at Franklin Covey Field in the third game of a four-game series.

 

With the win, Nashville (19-19) snapped a season-high six-game losing streak.

 

Dillard (1-3) -- who retired the final seven batters in order -- allowed three runs on six hits over a season-high nine innings to earn his first Sounds win in his eighth start of the campaign, joining Zach Jackson as the second Nashville hurler to work nine frames this season. It was the right-hander?s first complete game since a nine-inning shutout win on June 20, 2006 for Double-A Huntsville.

 

The Sounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Salt Lake starter Pedro Liriano on Joe Dillon?s RBI single to left that brought home Charles Thomas.

 

Nashville doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the fifth. Callix Crabbe reached on a one-out single, moved to third following a Liriano wild pitch combined with a throwing error by Bees catcher Jeff Mathis, and scored on Charles Thomas? RBI fielder?s choice.

 

Laynce Nix continued his strong first week with the Sounds in the seventh when his third home run in four games, a two-out solo shot to left off Salt Lake reliever Marcus Gwyn, increased the Nashville lead to 3-0. Nix has hit safely in each of his four games with the Sounds and is batting .471 (8-for-17) with three home runs and seven RBIs over that stretch.

 

Dillon, who extended his season-best hitting streak to four games with a 4-for-5 evening, followed Nix?s blast with a single, moved to second on a Mathis passed ball, and scored the Sounds? fourth run on Brad Nelson?s subsequent RBI single to center. Dillon became the sixth Nashville player to record four hits in a game this season.

 

The Bees broke up Dillard?s shutout in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs to pull with one at 4-3. After loading the bases with one out, Nick Gorneault scored the Bees? first run on an Adam Pavkovich groundout before Gary Patchett delivered a two-out, two-run single to center to bring home Mathis and Casey Smith.

 

Nashville third baseman Vinny Rottino singled in the sixth inning to extend the Sounds? longest hitting streak of the season to nine games.

 

Liriano (1-5) was tagged with his Pacific Coast League-leading loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings of work.

 

The teams wrap up the series with an 11:35 a.m. CT finale on Tuesday morning. Right-hander Chris Oxspring (2-2, 1.98 ) will toe the rubber for Nashville to square off against Bees right-hander Jonathon Rouwenhorst (4-0, 4.08 ) .

Tim Dillard with the complete game. Dillard gets outs, but he doesn't really strike anyone out. If i had to guess, I'd say he's never going to strikeout 100 guys in a mjaor league season...is he Jeremy Sowers? or is he Dan Kolb...Hopefully he figures out a way to keep getting tem out, even without a K Ball. Laynce Nix putting on a clinic...which feels eerily similar to the way he performed in Nashville before his callup in 2006.

Stars' Rally for Win and Surge into Top Spot

 

Lou Palmisano?s ground ball out pushed across the decisive run in the ninth inning, as the Stars rallied for a 5-4 comeback win over Carolina Monday night in the middle game of a five-game set at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The Stars extended their winning streak to a season-best five games and climbed to 19-17 on the season and into sole possession of first place in the North Division, while the Mudcats slipped to 14-24 overall and 7-11 at home. Huntsville has won the last nine games between the two teams dating back to a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on July 22.

 

Trailing 4-2 entering the eighth inning, Hernan Iribarren, named as the Southern League Hitter of the Week earlier in the day, Guilder Rodriguez and Steve Sollmann were all walked by Craig Molldrem, who battled back to strike out Palmisano and retired Brendan Katin on a foul pop to first. Ulyses Davenport, who grew up in Raleigh, then lined the first pitch he saw from Molldrem into center field for a base hit to score Iribarren and Rodriguez to tie the game. It was his first hit this year that knocked in more than one run.

 

Mark DiFelice, who had given up a run in the seventh, retired the side in order in the eighth and wound up picking up his second win of the season. Kurt Koehler took over in the ninth for the Mudcats and yielded a one-out single to Iribarren before Rodriguez hit a one-hopper to second baseman Kevin Randel, who fielded and threw wildly past second base into left field to allow Iribarren to advance to third and Rodriguez to second. Sollmann was given the intentional pass to load the bases and Palmisano followed with his chopping grounder to short that scored Iribarren with the game-winner. Palmisano has hit safely in five in a row, 12 out of 13 and has knocked in a run in six straight games on the road.

 

Marino Salas retired the side in order to nail down his fifth save of the month and his eighth in eight opportunities on the season. Fittingly, Iribarren made a diving stop of a sharply hit ground ball and threw from his knees to retire Randel for the final out. Stars? starter Adam Pettyjohn allowed three runs, all with two outs, on two hits and a season-high four walks over six innings.

 

Carolina?s Rick Vanden Hurk, who made four appearances in the big leagues with the Marlins earlier this season, was scratched from his scheduled start less than hour before the game and replaced by Jarrett Santos, who lasted four innings in his first start of the season. He gave up two runs on four hits and was followed by Blake McGinley, who went 2 2/3 scoreless frames.

Always good to see a Huntsville win, unfortunately in this case at the expense of Craig Molldrem, Carolina pitcher that hails from Wisconsin. Great kid that is trying to overcome a second shoulder surgery.

After a .226 April, Hernan Iribarren has bounced back to hit .349 this month and .440 for the last eight days. For his efforts, he captured the Southern League Player-of-the-Week Award -- the first Huntsville Star to win any kind of weekly award this season....... Monday night, hitting in the top spot, he played a part in another come-from-behind win over Carolina -- the third such in this series (although the Stars only had to overcome a 1-0 deficit Sunday).

 

Trailing 4-2 in the top of the 8th, Hernan, Guilder Rodriguez, and Steve Sollmann were all walked by reliever Craig Molldrem to lead off the inning. Molldrem battled back, striking out Lou Palmisano and retiring Brendan Katin on a foul pop to first baseman Grant Psomas........ Get Ron Davenport for the last out, and Carolina is out of the inning, and in all likelihood, walk off with a win........ But Davenport, a .176 hitter on the road who had never had a two-RBI day for the Stars, hit the first pitch from Molldrem and lined it into center to tie the game........ Mark DiFelice, a former Mudcat from 2000-01, retired Carolina in order in the 8th.

 

Kurt Koehler, who gave up six runs in the Stars' record 13-run inning Saturday, came on in the 9th and retired Steve Moss, now mired in a 3-for-26 slump. (He had a bad May last year, too, hitting .198 with just one RBI.)....... But Iribarren got the Stars going with a single to left........ At this point, a ground ball hit by Rodriguez to second baseman Kevin Randel would have ended the inning and the game. It had double play written all over it....... But Randel threw the one-hopper away to left field and that put Iribarren on 3rd and G.Rod on 2nd....... Sollmann was walked intentionally to load the bases........ Next, Palmisano, 0-for-3 after a 1st inning single, hit a chopper to short. Iribarren, with good speed, scored the go-ahead run and Marino Salas, who usually has to work to get his saves, retired the Mudcats in order to give the Stars their 5th straight win, his 8th save, and the Stars' 9th straight win over Carolina dating back to July 22nd of last year........ And more importantly, first place in the Northern Division.

 

This was the first time Salas had actually retired the side in order to get the save, although on two occasions, he faced the minimum, thanks to a game-ending double play, and once, had to get just one out.

 

The Mudcats were held to just three hits, two of them given up by starter Adam Pettyjohn in his best start since April 18th (6 1/3 IP, 2 R vs. Jacksonville).... One of those was a home run to Brett Hayes after he walked Vince Harrison with two out in the 2nd...... DiFelice gave up one hit -- a single to Hayes in the 7th -- that led to a run on a sacrifice fly.

 

Carolina's bullpen had not given up a run in six of their first seven games this month, but in the last seven games, they've yielded 18 of the 23 earned runs they've given up in May and lost three of Carolina's last six games..

 

Steve Hammond (3-4, 5.92) will face James Russ Tuesday...... Ron Davenport has four hits in this series, more than any previous series this season, raising his average to .196. It hasn't topped .200, even during the early part of the season........ Brendan Katin, despite going 1-for-4, is 7-for-14 in this series with two doubles, a home run, and four RBIs....... Next to Steve Sollmann and Lou Palmisano, Katin, with a .305 average, is the next-best hitter on the road.
