Robin19 released [reply 251: New contract - a must read]

RightFieldCoder

Friends teammate recently went on a rehab assignment on the east coast. Had a great time fishing with other rehabbing players. She came back with some great stories of the crabs that can be found out there by the Atlantic Ocean. Buddy designated teammate for assignment and went out for his own rehab assignment. After one slump buster he was granted a great new contract with many nice options. He signed with a large market club that came with a company car, spacious new home and a big signing bonus w/ bankrole. He is now thankful that crabs were in season on the east coast.

Edit: This is a no-kidding scenario. I am actually a little bit jealous even though I have a great 5 year deal.

Brew City- In very shocking news, it was announced that Robin19 has agreed to sign on to an independent league team The Cherries. Robin19 was cut by his old team and he planned to sit out the rest of the season. He was quoted at the time saying that he wanted to land with another team, but no one thought it would be this soon. Least of all Robin19, "It's still a little of a shock to me, too. When an organization gives up on you, you want to spend some time re-evaluating your approach to the game." Apparently Robin19 didn't have as much time as he thought. Shortly after being cut Robin19's agent was contacted via internet by The Cherries. Robin19 wasn't planning on doing any negotiating with them, but "the more I looked at the team the more I liked that attitude over there."

Robin19 and The Cherries apparently contacted each other several times to discuss styles of play and general philosophy. "It seems like a match made in heaven. The style of play I'm at now matches the style of play The Cherries are looking for. Our philosophies also appear to be in sink." Robin19 met with The Cherries for a try out on Sunday. The planned hour try out lasted three. "And it would have lasted longer if it didn't start so late." They met again on Tuesday night. "I just wanted to get out and keep from getting out of shape. There was so much chemistry between myself and the team they presented me with a contract right then and there." Robin19 agreed late in the night to sign the contract and become property of The Cherries. "It's a no brainer. When presented with a contract like this from a team that seems to have so much promise you can't turn it down. You don't know when or if the opportunity will come up again. They also had really attractive uniforms."

He is expected to be sent to Rookie League, but Robin19 remains confident he will be promoted to their Class A club soon. Robin19's old team could not be reached for comment.

Just make sure not to sign a lifetime contract until you're sure the team has World Series potential
Agreed, Twins.

Don't believe any hype from the GM, either. Trust me, I signed with the Pirateshttp://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/ohwell.gif

GAME05 was also recently released from his obligations to his team. Originally signed as a draft-and-follow, he showed potential from the start. However, talks on a longer-term contract never materialized. Said a team spokesman through an interpreter: "GAME05 has a lot of skills, but failed to read the coach's signs on numerous occasions, so we need to go in a different direction." A replacement for GAME05 has not yet been announced.

Reached at a local watering hole, GAME05 had mixed emotions about his release. "Well, it never helped that the team didn't speak English, and the coach is over there just waving his arms around. What the heck? I even bought them a translation dictionary, but they never bothered reading it. So there were frustrations on both sides, and it's probably best I find a new team with a little more enthusiasm. Still, I'm going to miss playing ball."

When asked about his future, GAME05 said he would let some of his nagging injuries heal for a week, then find some tryouts and hopefully stick with a new team soon.

The Cherries?

The Cherries refers to something else besides their style of play. Believe me, this team is championship caliber. Definite playoff potential.

Well, Robin19 "the Cherries" is a very nice team to sign with good job with that one. I have to say your old team was a little plain , seemed like your time with your old team ran its course, hopefully your new team will treat you well and , you can continue to sign contract extention with your new team and the team doesnt ask for a buyout. but as well as i know you you make a perfect match for your new team.

Yesterday morning I was leaving my "giant mansion because I'm a rich athlete" to go clean out my locker after my release from my old team, and I find a note on my ferrari: "Your stats are impressive. We'd like you to try out. Call us."

I'm not sure at all what team this could be. Only one team around my exclusive gated community has watched me play, and only very briefly, so that's my best guess--but I like the makeup of the team if my guess is right.

So I called the number last night at 8 and get the machine. And apparently two GMs are sharing the same office, and they represent different sports. The note was clearly written by a baseball representative, however.

I called a second time at 8:30, but a little nervous because I didn't exactly want Football GM to pick up. No answer, and I chose not to leave a message once again. Almost did, but I don't want to start any sort of fight between them from a random athlete leaving a message. But for now I am choosing to think positively, that the GMs only share the office and have separate scouts and administrators.

I sought the advice of a couple veteran players, and now we're all a little curious about how this might play out.

I'd strongly advise against signing with two (or more - gasp) sports. Seasons overlap, plus two sports have overlapping playoffs, which could get ugly. Multiple tryouts, on the other hand, are encouraged as you could find you like another sport better because the team you try out for is very good.

sorry, i probably wasn't totally clear. Only recently have I become a FA, and I don't have any ambitions for playing on two separate teams. I only meant that it was surprising when I called the GM's number that Lady GM shared an office with another GM who, uh, wears a jock strap. I am choosing to assume that they are the first brother-sister General Managers in pro sports, and rest assured, I would be loyal to whatever the new team might be and expect the same.

I just wanted to update this Players Union on these preliminary contract negotiations since it's been a somewhat unorthodox process.

I also wondered if the Union here might know of a good way to get the Lady GM on the phone should Jock-Strap GM be the first to pick up. I don't know if it would be cool to outright say to him "Lady GM left a note on my Ferrari but I don't really know her" or if there might be a more tactful approach.

Ha... Isn't that the point?

yeah, i kind of laughed when i wrote that, too.

speaking of, I've decided the best tactic is just to mention the note, whichever GM picks up the phone. I think if Lady GM is indeed trying to sneak around, random notes would sure be a bad strategy.

boy, I knew I should have introduced myself to the Lady GM when I had the chance!

Seems like a lot of guys are getting released from their teams. Aren't there any brewerfan.netters who have left their team because they fulfilled their contract and went for greener pastures?

In my case, I had an opt-out clause a la ARod on my lifetime deal. I took the old team up on that deal and went on to sign a lot of short-term deals with several teams of varying levels of credibility before signing another solid year to year with mutual option deal. The short term deals didn't work out so well, but it was nice to be able to get out and play in a bunch of different cities after having locked into that lifetime deal at age 21 after having been with the organization since 17.

Update: Jock-Strap GM called my phone. I did not mention the note. Said I must have dialed the wrong number (but twice?). I do believe I am out of calls from this point forward, as I don't want to be a player who appears to be stalking some mystery team. I think I can only hope that this team notices me strolling around the ballpark at some point in the future.

ha! this is great. my metaphors make sense only to me. ha. and here I am, a professional writer.

Please excuse me for breaking the unwritten rule of this very great thread just once: girl left her number on my car (girl's handwriting). don't know who she is. called the number, "Mike and Tina" or something like that on the answering machine. brother/sister? just roommates? boyfriend/husband? beats me. I mostly assume brother/sister since that's a pretty dumb tactic for a cheater to take, but one never truly knows. I leave no message, since I don't want to be part of it should it be something not cool, and also don't want to be the cause of some big breakup (or have my car smashed, frankly).

the dude calls me yesterday, had my number on ID and was checking. I told him that I must have had the wrong number. Should have said something? beats me. I've made three calls over two days (today is the third day, but no call made). She'd have my number if she knew to investigate.

I should add also, that the girl I had guessed it was from did not write it. I ran into her in person (I don't know her, unfortunately) and as smoothly as could be, asked her. nope. and it's possible she thinks I'm weird now or at best just have the worst pick-up lines ever.

The way I figure, I have two options:

1. Call one more time and only one more time. Leave a message and number, or try to smoothly get the girl on the line should the guy pick up.

2. Just let the whole thing be. One more call may land me at "stalker" or at least "annoying jerk." Maybe she'll just happen to see me in the parking lot and say something in person (btw, I've been taking more walks in the parking lot lately).

I say you contact the city and just ask specifically for the GM. The GM gave you the number, and the switchboard gave you the name. If you're nervous about the same number popping up on the ID, go to an agent's office and call from there. If the GM took the time to send you a letter she must have recieved a positive scouting report about you. I think you should at least talk to the GM and learn more about the franchise.

(boy, took me a little while to dig up this thread, but it was such a good one)

well, currently holding pitching demonstrations for two teams, hoping one might make me an offer. On Monday I had an appointment to meet with one GM, but the GM never showed. A good excuse, but no notice of cancellation means to me that my role on the team won't be very strong, and I'm only interested in starting. I haven't called off talks quite yet, but may soon.

Demonstrations for the second GM have not yet occurred, but I have some specific peripherals I know the GM is looking for, so I'm hopeful I don't have sudden control problems and mess things up. I've suggested Saturday morning to throw a few pitches off the mound, and should hear by tonight if the schedule works out.

it's odd, i always have calm nerves at gametime, but this time i'm getting nervous and anxious for Saturday's demo. what's interesting is another pitcher and personal friend of mine once made the 40-man roster two years ago, but was cut very early in spring training. he has said he won't bring his family over for barbecue anymore if i sign with this team. But I've decided I'd accept a contract if one was offered.
