i'll type up more later, but Taylor Green, Steve Chapman, and Kenny Holmberg (among many others) brought out the big sticks today...

 

Taylor Green reminds me a bit of Ryan Crew, who played with the power last year...he's got a very quick bat which helps him generate a good bit of power...he's also got a strong arm...i will say that it is very windy here today, but his homers would have been gone anyway...

POWER AVOID SWEEP

 

Taylor Green hit a pair of home runs and the West Virginia Power avoided the sweep as they outslugged the Greensboro Grasshoppers 14-10 in the final game of the series at First Horizon Park on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The ?Hoppers took an early 2-0 lead on Chris Coghlan?s two-run homer in the first inning. The Power took a three-run lead with a five-run third inning. Darren Ford singled in a run, and an errant throw on the play allowed Martin Maldonado to score the tying run. Green scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, Kenny Holmberg grounded out and plated Ford in the process and Andrew Lefave singled in the final run of the inning.

 

Taylor Green?s first home run of the day was a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Later in the fourth Holmberg doubled to bring in Ford. In the fifth, Green struck again with a three-run homer, his fourth of the year.

 

Greensboro didn?t go quietly. In the fifth inning Jacob Blackwood singled in a run and Coghlan scored on a wild pitch. Emilio Ontiveros grounded out and brought in Scott Cousins in the sixth. Cousins singled in two runs in the seventh inning and the ?Hoppers scored their third run of the inning on Brent Brewer?s errant throw. In the eighth inning Coghlan hit his second bomb of the game to bring the ?Hoppers within one.

 

The Power pulled away in the ninth inning. Brewer singled in a run, Steve Chapman scored on a wild pitch and Green grounded into a double play to plate the final run of the inning.

 

Brae Wright (3-2) went six innings, allowed five runs on six hits to earn the victory, E.J. Shanks (5) got the save and Sandy Rosario (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

 

The Power improved to 25-11 with the win and the Grasshoppers fell to 25-14 with the loss. Four Power players scored multiple runs, six Power players had multiple hits, and Green paced the Power with five RBI. His two-home run game was West Virginia?s first individual multi-homerun game of the year.

 

The Power will begin a four game series against the Asheville Tourists at McMormick Field on Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Alex Periard (3-0, 0.93) and the Tourists will counter with right hander Simon Ferrer (3-2, 5.59). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Manatees dismiss Hammerheads

 

Steve Garrison anchored a strong performance by Brevard County's pitching staff as the Manatees defeated host Jupiter, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Garrison (3-2) surrendered an unearned run on four hits over six innings and did not walk a batter. The 20-year-old southpaw retired the final seven batters he faced after allowing Torre Langley's RBI double in the fourth inning. Dave Johnson struck out the side in a 1-2-3 seventh and Josh Wahpepah worked two perfect frames.

 

Michael Bell hit an RBI double in the second inning to put the Manatees (23-16) on the board, while Alcides Escobar's two-run single in the sixth gave them the lead for good. Bell, Cole Gillespie and Ryan Crew all drove in runs in the seventh.

 

Christopher Volstad (3-4) took the loss, surrendering four runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. Wes Letson did not retire any of the four batters he faced, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. Carolina Power Surge Slows Down Stars

 

Vince Harrison, Brett Hayes and Lee Mitchell hit home runs to back the solid pitching of Jesus Delgado in Carolina?s 9-2 win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the last of a five-game set at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The Mudcats bounced back to win the last two games after dropping the first three to improve to 16-24, while the Stars dropped to an even 19-19 and into second place, one game behind Tennessee in the Southern League North Division.

 

The Stars scored first for only the tenth time this season and lost for a second time while plating the first run or runs of the game. Hernan Iribarren led off the third inning with a single, stole second base, moved to third base on a bunt single by Mel Stocker and scored on a force play at second base on a ground ball hit by Steve Sollmann, who knocked in his 18th run of the year. Sollmann reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Chase Lambin on a ground ball hit by Lou Palmisano before Carlos Corporan flied out for the second out. The runners pulled off a double steal but were stranded when Mike Carlin fouled out for the final out of the frame. Huntsville did not push another runner past second base until the ninth when Ulyses Davenport doubled as a pinch-hitter and scored on a Brendan Katin ground out.

 

The Mudcats took control with three runs in the third and were aided by two errors by the visitors, who had made only one in the first four games, and matched a season-high with three. A Sollmann throwing error on a Dante Brinkley ground ball allowed Delgado, who had singled, to reach second base safely and he would score to tie the game when Grant Psomas walked with the bases loaded. Lee Mitchell singled in the second run and a throwing error by shortstop Yohannis Perez allowed Lambin to cross the plate to complete the rally.

 

Brinkley?s double play grounder knocked in the fourth run for the home side and a solo shot by Harrison made it 5-1 after five. Stars? starter Lindsay Gulin, who bounced into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded in the second inning, was lifted after five frames and suffered his first loss. The veteran southpaw allowed three earned runs on six hits, while issuing four walks and recording a pair of strike outs.

 

Corey Thurman gave up a long ball to Hayes, the first batter he faced, which ended a streak of 11 2/3 scoreless innings over seven outings. The veteran right-hander also allowed a two-run long ball to Lee Mitchell and has now been scored on in three of his 11 outings. The Mudcats are 8-1 when hitting multiple home runs in a game.

 

Delgado went six innings, allowing a run on four singles to earn his third win. He struck out five and walked three and was followed by Harvey Garcia, Scott Tyler and Scott Nestor. The Stars were held to two runs on nine hits, eight singles, over the last two games after plating 31 runs on 35 hits in winning the first three.

 

Huntsville returns home Friday night to open a five-game set with West Tenn and will send left-hander Sam Narron to the hill against Diamond Jaxx? southpaw Justin Thomas. PEREZ BACK, BUT NOT HIS DEFENSE

 

After scoring 31 runs, hitting .315, and winning the first three games of this series against the Mudcats, I thought for sure the Stars would break a spell they've floundered in this season....... Every five-game series they've played this year has been a 3-2 split....... The Stars have won three of them and lost four.

 

The Stars missed an opportunity to score in the 2nd inning when Lindsay Gulin, making his first start since the Stars' near no-hitter last Friday, chopped a double play ball to short with the bases loaded, ending the inning. But Steve Sollmann managed to beat out a double play grounder in the 3rd, allowing Hernan Iribarren to score, giving the Stars an early 1-0 lead...... It's only the 10th time this season they have scored first.

 

But it wasn't a night for the Stars' defense, and two errors in the 3rd inning got the Mudcats started....... Yohannis Perez, playing in his first game since bruising his right thumb last Thursday night, contributed to Carolina's three-run inning that put them out in front to stay....... Sollmann's error on a Dante Brinkley grounder allowed Jesus Delgado, who led off the 3rd with a single, to go to 2nd........ Gulin got behind Grant Psomas, then walked him with the bases loaded an a 3-2 pitch to get the Mudcats on the board........ Perez made a fine play on a sharply hit grounder by Lee Mitchell, but overthrew Iribarren, allowing Brinkley and Chase Lambin to score to give the Mudcats a 3-1 lead.

 

The Mudcats made it 4-1 in the 4th after Kevin Randel doubled high off the wall in left field. Delgado pushed him to 3rd on a sac bunt, and scored on a double play grounder to Perez........ Vince Harrison then hit the first of three Carolina home runs in the 5th, clearing the 1st tier of signage, and reverberating off the 2nd wall in left to make it 5-1......... The Stars were blanked on one hit from the 4th through the 6th innings. They threatened in the 7th by putting two runners on with one out, but by this time, the Mudcats, who scored in every inning but the first two, were out in front, 6-1.

 

Corey Thurman gave up a home run on a 1-2 pitch to Brett Hayes in the 6th, ending a string of 11 2/3 scoreless innings..... After taking the first three games of this series, the Stars offense went to sleep, scoring a total of just two runs and hitting .143........ Lou Palmisano came into the series hitting .378, then went 2-for-17, dropping him down to .330....... Hernan Iribarren, on the other hand, pressed on, going 7-for-19 (.368) in the series and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games. He also managed to score nine times in this series...... Ron Davenport went 5-for-16 in the series (.313).

 

The Stars take Thursday off while the rest of the league plays, then returns home to play the Seattle-affiliated West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx for the first time this season, Friday. The Diamond Jaxx will send Justin Thomas (0-1, 1.93), a left-hander ranked 12th among the Mariners' top prospects. They say he's got some of the best stuff in the minor league system....... Sam Narron (0-3, 6.08) will start the first game of the series for the 6th straight time this season. He's given up 21 hits in 17 innings this month and been scored upon in the 1st inning in four of his seven starts.
