Brewers players, other sports/occupations

jaybird2001wi

I read somewhere that newly called up Vinny Rottino was a varsity letterwinner in soccer during high school and it made me wonder, has any other Brewer player been famous or played another sport with adequacy throughout their life? Didn't JJ Hardy play golf or something in high school? Was Ray King ever a linebacker or defensive lineman in high school? And I seem to recall that one of our guys may have gotten offers to play basketball instead of baseball in high school. I am clueless right now. Any help?

EDIT: Wanted to throw the "What if they were not playing baseball, what would they be doing instead" deal.

According to Jenkins' brewers.com bio, he played football and basketball in high school. I wonder if he played QB, ala a "Brett Favre" look-a-like deal.

Wow, it says that if JJ Hardy were not in baseball, he would have become a firefighter. Could anyone imagine JJ Hardy running into a burning house to save children, a mother and a couple cats?

Holy crap, Kevin Mench's brother-in-law is Scott Podsednik? When did this happen? Is Mench secretely Lisa Dergen's brother? Or did Mench marry one of Scotty Po's sisters? Small world! How does a guy from Delaware (Mench) happen to meet Scotty Po's sister (from Texas). Sounds like this could be an interesting story, just as interesting as Brady Quinn's cute sister being married to Packers' AJ Hawk.

Mench said that he would have been a hockey player had he not been in baseball, which is understandable since Delaware and the New Englands are big on hockey and pretty much every baseball player from that area also played hockey and vice versa (see: Tom Glavine and Chris Drury).

I think Koskie gave up hockey after the fear of getting concussions, go figure.

Oh, and Johnny Estrada got a degree in recreation and would have been a recreation director for at-risk youth if not for baseball. Could anyone picture him running local kids baseball leagues?

Johnny Estrada and running should not be included in the same thought ever.

Corey was a shortstop on his team att 6'6" and unbelievable range. He hit 48 homeruns in his high school career in three years. But he was a stand out on the basketball court too. He could bring it up the court on any point gaurd or number two gaurd, and he could litterly jump out of the gym.

You could see it in his eyes if he got out on a fast break thinking what kind of dunk am I gonig to try now. And believe me most were unbelievable.

He was being recruited by several progams in the south, but Coach Couch told them they were all wasting their time because he played basketball only as a hobby.

Is anyone else familiar with the Robin Yount contiplating pro golf story. I believe Yount missed the first month and a half of the 1978 season because of an injury (this helped Molitor break into the majors). At the time, the story was that Yount was thinking about quiting baseball to pusue a career as a pro golfer. In fact, I think this was reported in the papers. However, I thought I read a couple of years ago that this was not a true story.

I went to a rival high school of Mitch Stetter and he was quite the basketball, football and tennis player. I believe his serve was faster then his fastball. I always could make contact against him better in baseball then what I did in tennis.
