Brewers coin flip for one game playoff... Results: Cubs & Rockies host Brewers; Cards host Cubs; Brewers host Cards, Dodgers, Phillies

billyhallfan

The Cubs will host us if we tie, the Cards will host against the Cubs if they tie. We will host the Cards if we tie.

Edit: If we somehow tie for the Wild Card: We would host the Padres if we tie them, we would host the Dodgers, if we tie the Phillies, we'd host them, if we tie Colorado, the playoff would be in Colorado, and if we tie the Cubs for the Wild Card, the playoff would be in Chicago as well.

So wait, this is serious? There's no official rules for deciding who gets homefield for a 1-game playoff? (Like, best division record, best NL record, etc etc...) Deciding by coinflip seems pretty lame.

I need a scouting report on the coin flipper: what kind of hang time do they get on their flips?

How much rotation of the coin are we looking at in-air?

I'm assuming the toss will be indoors, so what kind of park effects will come into play?

(Personally, I'd have advocated 'heads' ....so Tails is probably the way to go.)

What happens if there's a 3-way tie for the Division?
I was just wondering the same thing. Could be a 3 way tie after tonight.

Edit: Found the answer in today's notes.

Melvin and reliever Scott Linebrink later debated whether MLB was prepared for three teams tying for a division crown, and the answer was yes. Assuming the Wild Card comes from a different division, which seems the most likely scenario in 2007, then the tie is broken by designating the clubs as "A," "B," and "C," with selection of those designations based on the clubs' records against one another. Club A would host club B on Oct. 1, and the winner of that game would host club C. on Oct. 2 to determine the division winner.

Melvin turned this coin flip thing into another dig at the fans. During the game last night he said something about having the fans vote because he didn't want to be second guessed. I know he meant it as a joke...but, does he really think contiuing to complain about and ridicule fans is a good business strategy?
