adam pettyjohn with a rough, rough start for huntsville..

also, click on cole gillespie's link through the box score and check out his numbers for this season...he's putting togetehr a very solid first half in brevard, especially considering this is his first full seaosn in the minors, and his first taste above rookie ball...i still think he's a premier prospect, and someone we'll be talking about as a possible starter in spring training 2009...

but then Huntsville comes all the way back to win on Katin's HR, nice win for the AA club today.

Another perfect day for the organization. We have seemed to have a lot of those this year.

Good call on Gillespie pogo. I was checking his stats earlier today and noticed his OPS for the month of May is over 1.000. Nice to see him heating up, and while his batting average is lower than I would like to see, the OBP and SLG are mighty good, especially in the FSL.

Unfortunately he seemed to have traded places with Errecart, who was hot in April and cold this month.

Will those two follow the path of Braun and see AA action in the second half of this season. Actually both of those guys are putting up numbers that are superior to Braun's last season in Brevard.

If Gillespie keeps it up I certainly could see him in AA to end the season. Errecart will need to get hot again to get a call-up.

However, just because their numbers are similar/better than Braun's were at BC a year ago doesn't necessarily mean they will follow a similar path. It would be cool to see both Gillespie and Inman follow a similar path as Braun and Gallardo a year ago though.

i think they'll both move up...Darren Ford and Mike Brantley will move to brevard at some point as well..

Gillespie is actually having a really impressive debut...he's on his way to a minor league player of the month award...

Ford is more than ready to move up, would flopping him with Fermaint make sense? Chuck has struggles so far this year and was cold to end last year. He really needs a jumpstart, and he too talented to let sit.

Final: West Virginia 9, Asheville (Rockies) 8

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER EDGE TOURISTS

The Asheville Tourists erased 6-1 and 8-4 deficits on Sunday afternoon but Steve Chapman?s RBI double in the eighth inning put the West Virginia Power over the top as they took their third game in a row from the Tourists with a 9-8 victory.

Darren Ford scored in the first inning on Geoff Strickland?s fielding error. Asheville tied the game on Victor Ferrante?s inside-the-park home run in the second.

The Power scored five times in the third to regain the lead. Ford and Chuckie Caufield hit RBI doubles, Taylor Green plated two with a single and pitcher Keith Weiser?s throwing error allowed the other run to score. Chapman drove in Caufield on a sacrifce fly in the fourth and John Alonso ripped an RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning to put the Power up 8-4. Asheville made it 8-6 in the sixth inning on Mike McKenry?s two-run homer and the Tourists tied the game in the seventh inning on Paulk?s sacrifice fly and Repec?s run-scoring double.

Alonso doubled with two outs in the eighth inning and scored the eventual winning run on Chapman?s two-bagger during the next at bat.

J.T. King (4-1) pitched an inning and a third, holding the Tourists scoreless to get the win and E.J. Shanks (6) earned the save. Zach Simons (2-1) was tagged with the loss.

The Power improved to 28-12 with the win and the Tourists fell to 29-13 with the loss. All nine Power position players hit safely, and six Power players had multi-hit games. Darren Ford extended his hitting streak to 11 games and Michael Brantley doubled to extend his on base streak to 16 games.

The Power will begin a four game series against the Augusta GreenJackets at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power will start left hander Brae Wright (3-2, 6.20) and the GreenJackets will counter with left hander Clayton Tanner (4-2, 1.56). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6_05 Central).

Additional details from MiLB.com:

Power edge Tourists

Stephen Chapman doubled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth inning to lead West Virginia over host Asheville, 9-8, on Sunday.

John Alonso ripped a two-out double to center, then scored on Chapman's double to right to break an 8-8 tie.

The Power's Darren Ford had two doubles to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and raise his batting average to .351. Alonso went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

J.T. King (4-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit while fanning three to pick up the win for West Virginia (28-12). Starter Roque Mercedes gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings. E.J. Shanks tossed a perfect ninth to record his sixth save.

Zachary Simons (2-1) took the loss after yielding one run on two hits while fanning one and walking one. Starter Keith Weiser, who came into the game 7-0, allowed eight runs -- three earned -- on 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Asheville (29-13) homered three times. Victor Ferrante belted his second homer in the fourth, Matthew Repec slammed a two-run shot in the third, and Michael McKenry cracked his seventh with a man on the sixth. -- Alan Friedman/MLB.com

West Virginia Box Score:

Another clean defensive effort; Power 6-for-6 in SB attempts, Brent Brewer with two to give him 15 on the season; seven doubles among the Power's 16 hits; Kenny Holmberg sidelined for an unknown reason for a third day, allowing both halves of the Taylor Green / Jimmy Mojica third base platoon to start; just-turned 19-year-old LHP Luis Ramirez has allowed 17 ER in his last 17.1 IP; starter Roque Mercedes' effort, would be generously described as "middling" statistically...

Final: Nashville 5, Albuquerque (Marlins) 2

Sounds Keep Rolling With 5-2 Win Over 'Topes

NASHVILLE ? Tim Dillard turned in his third straight quality start and Joe Dillon and Mike Rivera belted back-to-back home runs to propel the Nashville Sounds to a 5-2 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series at Greer Stadium.

The win was the Sounds? fifth in their last six games overall and the club's 12th in the last 14 home games. Nashville (23-20), which took three of four from the Isotopes, wrapped up its fourth winning series in five home series this season.

Albuquerque third baseman Scott Seabol put the visitors on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a one-out solo homer to left off Sounds starter Tim Dillard. The blast was his eighth of the year.

Nashville jumped in front by a 3-1 count in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back home runs from Dillon and Rivera.

With one out, Laynce Nix singled to center to break up Isotopes starter Paul Mildren?s no-hitter. Dillon (2-for-4) followed with his second home run of the series, a two-run shot to left that sailed just over the glove of a leaping Chad Hermansen and put the Sounds into the lead. Three pitches later, Rivera followed with his sixth roundtripper of the year, a shot off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center.

The blasts came one year to the date of Nashville?s last set of consecutive taters. Nelson Cruz and Rivera went deep on two straight pitches from Tacoma hurler Bobby Livingston on May 20, 2006 at Greer Stadium.

Dillon has been red-hot at the plate for the Sounds of late, hitting safely in seven of his last eight contests at a .462 clip (12-for-26).

Nix provided a defensive gem for Nashville in the top of the fifth, making a spectacular diving catch of a Johnny Raburn liner in the right-center gap following a long run (pictured at the link atop this post).

The Isotopes got a run back in the sixth when Eric Reed tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of former Sound Chad Hermansen, reducing the Nashville lead to 3-2.

Nashville responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of unearned runs charged to Mildren to extend the lead to 5-2. After the first two batters were retired, the Aussie southpaw issued walks to Rivera and Vinny Rottino before being replaced by right-hander Ross Wolf. After Jose Macias loaded the bases when he reached on a throwing error by Isotopes shortstop Robert Andino, Ozzie Chavez plated Rivera with an RBI single to right and pinch-hitter Andy Abad drew a bases-loaded RBI walk from Wolf to force home Rottino with the frame?s second run.

Dillard (2-3) earned his second consecutive win for the Sounds, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.25 through nine starts.

Grant Balfour followed with two perfect innings that included a pair of strikeouts before Luther Hackman came on to work a 1-2-3 ninth to secure his team-leading sixth save of the year and fourth in the club?s last five games.

Mildren (3-4) was issued the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits in his 5 2/3 frames of action. He walked three batters and struck out three.

The Sounds continue their homestand on Monday by welcoming the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds (AAA-Cardinals) to town for the 6 p.m. opener of a four-game series. It will be the teams? first of 16 meetings this season.

Right-hander Chris Oxspring (2-2, 2.58) will make the start for Nashville to face Memphis right-hander Mike Parisi (3-2, 7.46).

Nashville Box Score:

High praise of Tim Dillard in the interview linked just above - he induced two key GIDP's; requisite Ryan Braun update: 0-for-4, two fly outs, two ground outs...

The organization is now 43 games above .500. Just 3 years ago, in was 69 games below .500. Too bad Iowa won, keeping Nashville a game out of first.

There is so much depth from top to bottom, and no major injuries (knock on wood). It's a fun year so far.

Final: Brevard County 4, Dunedin (Blue Jays) 3

Brevard County Box Score:

Will Inman with the power effort (7 K's, only one ground ball out, while limiting the damage to one run while allowing an uncustomary ten baserunners in five IP -- also three stolen bases against he and catcher Nestor Corredor); watch out, Florida State League, here comes Angel Salome, on base all four times; Alcides Escobar with three more hits, including a double, he's among the top 3 in hits in the league; another nice relief stint for Ben Stanczyk...

web.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;sid=t503

Brevard County Game Log:

Inman worked around an error among the first inning baserunners -- uncanny how this kid bears down in the rare occasions when opponents threaten; Ned Yost back in action, off the DL at first base; Manatees Pitching Coach Fred Dabney ejected by HP umpire Matt Hensel in the 5th; the Blue Jays' Daryl Harang is Aaron's brother, and DH/C Kyle Phillips played 58 games for the Manatees last season...

Final: Huntsville 8, West Tenn (Mariners) 7, 11 innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Katin Carries Stars to Come From Behind Win!

Brendan Katin?s opposite field, walk off home run in the 11th inning lifted Huntsville to a dramatic 8-7 comeback win over West Tenn Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars have taken the first three games of the series to improve to 22-19 and maintain the top spot in the North Division by a half game over Tennessee, while the Diamond Jaxx fell to 18-25 and five games off the pace. The Stars pushed their home win streak to a season-high five games and clinched a second series victory in five tries on home soil, where they are now 12-11.

Juan Sandoval, the fifth pitcher of the day for West Tenn, opened the decisive frame on the hill and Katin, the first batter he faced, launched a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right field for his seventh home run of the season and his second game-winner in extra innings. He slugged a solo home run in the top of the 11th at Montgomery on April 22 to give the Stars a 2-1 win. Katin wound up collecting four hits in a game for a second time this season, both at home, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

West Tenn opened the game with four runs in the first inning on run-scoring hits by Prentice Redman, Marshall Hubbard, Charlton Jimerson and Luis Valbuena, who collected an infield single that knocked Stars? starter Adam Pettyjohn out of the game. The veteran southpaw retired only one of the eight hitters he faced and the first six batters he encountered all reached base. Bo Hall took over and gave up a home run in the second inning to Erick Monzon that put the visitors in front 5-0. Hall wound up going 3 2/3 innings in the longest stint by a Huntsville reliever this season and yielded a lone run on three hits. The five pitchers used in the Stars bullpen combined to go 10 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out seven.

The Stars got back into the game with three runs in the third off starter Robert Rohrbaugh but fell behind 7-3 in the fifth when the Diamond Jaxx plated two runs against Robert Hinton, who had allowed only two runs in his first 14 outings covering 17 innings. The Stars clawed back to within 7-6 with three more runs in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Yohannis Perez and Mel Stocker and a balk by Jose De La Cruz that plated Stocker.

Aaron Trolia gave up a one-out single in the ninth to Carlos Corporan and then was replaced by Craig James, who walked Katin before getting Adam Heether to fly out for the second out of the inning. Manager Don Money called on Lou Palmisano to bat for Perez and the Stars? catcher came through with a single into left field on a 3-2 pitch to chase home pinch-runner Guilder Rodriguez with the tying run.

The series continues Monday evening, as Huntsville will send southpaw Steve Hammond to the hill against West Tenn right-hander Joe Woerman. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 AM WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Only four hours, five minutes! No doubt we'll be reliving this game as part of David Weiser's yearly "Top 10 Games of the Season" feature in September...
