Anyone in California?

jaybird2001wi
I have been thinking about this for a bit. Although I will always call Wisconsin "home" I have been considering a short-term temporary move to Southern California for a few months. I have a lot of college and high school buddies who live in LA and San Diego and have been thinking about reuniting with them out in Southern California. I know the cost of living may be high, there could be some jobs to be had in busy and happening places in SoCal, plus I got experience in some fields. I was thinking of just packing a large military-style bag and boarding a Greyhound Bus for California and just chill there for a few months (I have the time, since I am on hiatus from college and just feel like the adventurous type at this point and I am kind of young, 24). I have even thought of auditioning for TV shows, etc. for kicks and giggles even though I know I have no shot at the roles.

well, I guess if you're going to do it, do it now when you're young. Us guys in their 30s have no shot to do something like that because our lives are, for the most part, established.

Until our inevitable mid-life crisis, at least.

Good luck, if that's what you choose to do.

That's an awesome goal. Who's to say you have no shot? Let us know when to look for you on your first commercial!

Are these people cool with you crashing with them for awhile?

Think about how much money this is going to cost and then multiply that by about four.

Other than that, yeah, go for it.

I live in The OC. Moving out here would probably be a fun adventure for a young person like yourself, if your buddies have a place for you to crash. You will be able to find a job of some sort, depending on what you want to do. However, be forewarned about the cost of living out here - almost everything is significantly higher than back in Wisc., and it's damn crowded.

I'm strictly out here for the weather, and if my wife would agree to, I'd strongly consider a move back to the homeland.

All in all, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably give it a shot. Nothing to lose!

Well, I got some good news and bad news about me entertaining the idea of moving to California for a short time. My buddy, Noah, just moved to San Diego with his girlfriend like two weeks ago and he doesn't have the space for me. But he just sent me an e-mail saying he will do anything he can to help me find a solid place to stay, or maybe a friend of his where I can stay for awhile if I decide to make the trip. He told me to let him know when I decide to make the move and he will figure something out for me.
As for me auditioning for roles for kicks and giggles, he mentioned a former high school mate of ours who is out in LA and is an indy film actress doing low budget films who could help me find auditions. He said things are hectic in SoCal and I should be able to find an honest job somewhere.
The more I think and entertain this idea, the more I actually want to go through with this. I mean, what better adventure for a single 20-something guy than to move to Southern California for a few months and enjoy the sites and sounds.
I personally would have preferred to move to New York over L.A. since I feel my personality is more "NY" than "LA" but if I can figure things out in regards to a job and housing before I go out there, why not make the plunge?

As far as the cost of living, you can't find a decent studio apartment in a decent neighborhood in LA for less than $1200/mo., probably closer to $1500/mo. If you find a decent person and can rent out a room in their house (with full access to kitchen/laundry), you may be able to find one for $800/mo. For a couple of months - go for it, if you can sustain the economics. Don't plan on staying if you can't make a lot of money.
