Ryan Braun's 28th HR...

In basketball, guys thump their chest after big dunks. In football there's the gravedigger or Darren Sharper's shake or Ray Lewis' ninja whatever it is he does. In soccer guys celebrate as though they've never scored a goal in their life. I don't understand how Ryan Braun watching his HR and doing a 3 step walk is such a "chump move." It happens in every sport

And I hate all of those. Football celebrations are especially ridiculous. At least in soccer you know you're only going to see a couple a game, whereas football if you happen to be within 5 feet of a play, you must be the greatest player in the world and thus show it.

But in Soccer every semi-hard foul is accompanied by the moaning, whining, drug off on a stretcher and gut wrenching acting performance of the foul-ee to get a yellow/red card on the foul-er.

Followed by the guy coming back in after 2 minutes.

Might not be showboating, persay, but it's annoying, stupid and FAR more obnoxious to me then anything Ryan Braun did.

Carlton Fisk waving at a ball to stay fair in the World Series versus what Braun did last night? Reach.

I was being facetious.

My bad. I thought you were continuing your previous argument from this thread.

A fist pump, clap of the hands, big smile, etc...that's fine. It's the grandstanding that some players do (and Braun has been doing) that doesn't belong, whether or not "it's a big deal" or "done in other sports."

What's lost in all this debate is when players "admire" their work and it ends up staying in the park...Bill Hall has done this multiple times this year (and is just as much of a culprit as Braun as far as this topic goes). It's just not a good habit to get in to from a sportsmanship standpoint as well as making yourself look downright foolish when you hit a single off the wall that should have at least been a double, or a double that possibly could have been a triple because you're posing.

Just because they do it in other sports doesn't make more tolerable for me.

Why must baseball be the sport devoid of any emotion?

This is like when Fielder was "pumped up" for scoring the winning run against Matt Capps the day after receiving a 95 mph fastball to the left shoulder. He was criticized by SI, Pirates players and fans, and even some Brewers fans. Imagine if football players acted so stoic after scoring a TD...That's no Lambeau Leaping, no spiking the ball, no high stepping, no dunking over the goalpost, etc...

I hate seeing Z pump his fist after striking a guy out, but I don't think it's out of line in any way. If Braun pumped up the team, or himself, or Prince, I say great...who really wants to see the emotionless play of the 90's Braves or current San Antonio Spurs? (I wouldn't mind seeing the same results though...)

Why do people get kicked out of golf tournaments for heckling?

I have no problem with what Braun did.

It's not like he did that to the Astros bench, he was looking at HIS OWN BENCH people. There is a BIG, BIG, difference there. And I believe more specifically it was directed toward Prince.

This is just another example of the mentality these days where you "better not do something because you just may offend one out of a thousand people". Get over it people.

I like it. Where did you get the video from?

Watching that again several times, now I really, really, have no problem with what he did. He took a couple of steps, while looking at HIS OWN BENCH, then ran around the bases.

Big deal.

Braun "offended" a lot of people, even his own manager, it is not as this thing is "PC run amok"

I am pretty sure that in the "good ol days", Bob Gibson or whoever was pitching would have beaned someone, and probably pretty hard.

Well it might not be a big deal to some, but the fact that this is being discussed is reason enough to make it more than that...It was brought up by several people right after it happened, on different web sites, and on TV, so apparently many found it to be un-sportsmanlike.

He wouldnt have apologized to the catcher his next at bat, and Yost wouldn't have said something to him. If for for some reason he thought that it wasn't a big deal then fine, but only if he has no problem wearing a fastball now and then and being thought of as that sort of player. Hopefully it was just a one time thing.

It has been mentioned several times already here, but there is a big difference between showing emotion and being a showboat...

Well, I sure hope he would never be stupid enough to look at the other bench after a HR...I don't think he would leave the game alive. Regardless of WHAT BENCH HE LOOKED AT...the point is don't look at any bench, why is it necessary? Put your head down and run. Why do some fans find this so entertaining? I don't get it. I don't get the whole "in your face, I'm better than you" mentallity. Do you think it's entertaining when football players signs a football after a touchdown and hand it to the fans, or some other self-indulgent act like that? To me it's just complete -beep- .Stop acting like a child and just play the game. Seriously, it's not all about you.

Even if I use %$^ signs? Ok?

I always appreciate the difference between this board and the brewers.com board but sometimes I feel like I'm in a Seinfeld episode.

GEORGE: All right. So, you hold out your money, speak your soup in a loud,

clear voice, step to the left and receive.

JERRY: Right. It's very important not to embellish on your order. No

extraneous comments. No

questions. No compliments.

"sometimes I feel like I'm in a Seinfeld episode. "

Except this site actually has the rules posted so anyone can read them.

What kind of language is not allowed?

Language is critical in any online forum, and Brewerfan.net aims to be more genteel than other sites.

Most major cuss-words are filtered out, with a character string such as @#%$.

Also filtered out are some words which are not strictly 'cuss' words, but are widely recognized as derogatory.

  • Preview your posts before sending, and if the preview screen shows that a word you used is filtered out, edit your post. (Would you use that language around your neighbor's 10-year-old?)
  • Using creative spellings or abbreviations to avoid the cuss filter is also not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to, replacing letters in cuss words with characters or spaces.

Don't be too quick to use RickieWeeks23's fine new avatar as the reference on this one, people. That thing is quite sped up from real-time, and the problem isn't necessarily what Braun did, but how he did it. His walk was s..l...o...w. I completely agree that he deserved to get nailed btw. the numbers, but I'd bet that's one of the things Ned addressed when correcting Ryan.

Screw tradition, I don't think anybody ever "deserves" to get deliberately hit with a pitch. Putting someone's season or career in jeopardy because of a semi-cocky incident is beyond classless, it's sick. I'm glad no other sports have such a twisted system of retribution.

If you can't take celebration, or even emotion, go play golf.
Was that celebration or emotion? Again, I don't know if I would have as big of an issue with this if it was a walk off HR or something like that, but he was "celebrating", showing "emotion" for putting his team ahead 6-0 in the third (second?).

I will agree with you that sometimes this retaliation stuff gets out of hand in baseball. I never understood a pitcher who goes aftter a hitter just because he hit a HR (with no showmanship). From what I understand that was the norm "back in the day". Actually, I think it was always the guy that batted after the guy who hit the HR who took the punishment.

Thanks for the outright condescention, and making sure to do it in a rude manner. You're entitled to your opinion, if only I were entitled to mine.

EDIT: I'm glad no other sports have such a twisted system of retribution.

Yea, like the non-existant hard foul in hoops, the 'enforcers' in hockey, and bell-ringing hits aimed at and delivered to the head in football. Good argument.

TLB, please don't misunderstand me.

I wasn't directing the comment at you, but rather at players who get uptight because the other team is supposedly "showing them up." Exhibit A: Ryan Doumit on May 6th. If you still take my comments as condescending, I apoligize.

I do still believe that plunking any player for almost any reason is weak.

If you are going to complain bout people being condescending, it would help your argument if you didn't paticipate in the same manner. Their is nothing wrong with having a passionate or even forceful argument, just try to stay as considerate as possible during the discussion, even if you feel the person you are debating with isn't.
