Racine continues its downward spiral

jaybird2001wi

Well, Racine continues its string of bar shootings. Since July of 2005, four people have been killed outside bars and more than 15 have been shot. I was at the bar, Ricky's Place, back in July 2005 when shots were fired, striking the bar owner and a bouncer. Then months later, three people were killed outside "Jimmy's Mr. Kool." Tonight takes the cake. I don't even know why I even bother going to bars in Racine anymore, pretty much all of the bars are turning into trouble. I can describe the types of people that go to each of the bars I frequent and it isn't even fun anymore, less pretty girls to talk to as well now. The only bar worth going to in downtown Racine these days is the Ivanhoe Pub because the owner has continually tried making it a "classy" bar and he has done a good job weeding out the undesirables since he opened it back in 2002.

I was at this bar last night and it seems like half the time I am there, there are people who continually ask me if I am interested in "buying stuff" if you know what I mean from them.

Here is the rundown of the problems at each bar I have gone to at one point or another:
1. Ricky's - Great place to reunite with people I knew back in high school, decent pick up scene.
2. Ivanhoe - Classy bar, great bartenders with good people skills and willingness to chat it up with bar patrons about anything.
3. Coasters - Decent most of the time, but gothic people and weird people from my high school go there.
4. Michigan's Pub - Decent most of time, but lot of fights happen there and it seems like most of the drunken accidents happen outside the bar at bar time. They actually have a dress code there now to weed out gang affiliation fashion statements and they literally kick people out who wear their hats to the sides and they must wear their hats to the front at all times.
5. TBGs - Ghetto bar, most of the time I have witnessed or heard of drug transactions being made in the men's bathroom. Women are not to cool there.
6. Joey's - Mostly a "biker" bar where the patrons have an abundance of tatoos everywhere and I have seen some registered sex offenders frequenting the place.

I never thought the Racine bar scene was that great to start with. I grew up there, and hit the bars until probably about 3-4 years ago. I barely remember where we would go...I know I used to hit Coasters occasionally. The Chart Room in the Summer. Hammes' once in awhile...I even spent a few night boozing at the Mosquito Inn. Most of the ones I have been to lately were for my friend's concerts. I think he had shows at The Bank, The Retreat (or something like that), and a few other randoms. Honestly, I'd usually hit the bars in Kenowhere around Carthage. Peg and Lous was fun, and I know there was another decent place in that area.

As far as Racine in general, the crappy parts are getting crappier, but the nice parts are still decent.
