Trachsel to Cubs from O's

With this deal, why haven't the Brewers pulled the trigger on any waiver wire deals yet? It seems like Doug Melvin is asleep at the wheel. The Brewers got 10 hours to find someone or else we can call it a season.

But then again, he does have the slowest delivery in all of baseball, so teams could steal on him the entire game. Are the Cubs playing anybody with legitimate stolen base potential? I know the Dodgers are in Chicago, will Trachsel start against them and face off against Juan Pierre?

It seems like Doug Melvin is asleep at the wheel.

If "asleep at the wheel" equates to not making questionable deals (of which he's already made one this season), then I'm OK with that. I don't think Trachsel would have been a bad pickup for the Crew, but at what price? (Especially since we've already coughed up a couple good pitching prospies this season)

"The Cubs will pay his $3.1 million salary in 2007 and his $4.75 million club option for 2008" per rotowire.

So thats about 7.85 Million over this season and next. Now I'm not sure if he'll back with them next season, it sounds by that like he would be, but they can always release him too. But thats a chunk of change.

If the 2 prospects Melvin would've sent were horrible, I still wouldn't consider it tooo much. Trachsel has gone down hill. He's had some good years no doubt, but 6 of his 13 years in the Majors he's had an ERA under 4.30, and only 3 years under a 4.0ERA.

I think he couldve been a high risk/ medium reward type player lol. He could provide vet leadership, eat some innings, and could potentially go on a stretch run pitching well to get us into the Play-offs, maybe.... but the fact that your paying a 37 year old that money and giving up a couple prospects for something that could prove to hurt your club..ill pass. and his walks have gone up while his K's have gone down the past few years, thats a recipe for diaster.

Gotta remember too, the Cubs will throw money at anyone.. for Hendry its like tossing 2 pennies and those two prospects to get Traschel.

Well it at least seemed the cubs are still making the push, but i agree Melvin knows this team has really no shot

(yes they are 21/2 games back but have shown no signs of a winning ball club.)NO sense in trading any more of our Prospects this year.

brewman, not trading prospects for an over-the-hill pitcher is showing signs of giving up on your team? Does anyone realize this is Steve Trachsel?

EDIT: If the Cubs go on to lose to the Astros today, and we can pick up a win over the Pirates, that's back to a game & a half. Why are so many people counting this past series as the official end of the regular season? This is getting ridiculous.

Exactly. Although the Cubs games did carry some added weight, it's not the end of the world that they're down 2.5 games, there's plenty of time left to make up that small of a margin. If the Cubs get swept this weekend and the Brewers sweep the Pirates, they're suddenly in first again. Now, that's an unlikely thing to happen, but it's not unimaginable for the Brewers to go 5-2 over their next 7 games and the Cubs go 2-5.

The announcers said during the Cubs broadcast today that the Cubs may go to a 6 man rotation They also said that Traschel would pitch in the double header against the Cards. Traschel will be used as a starter rather than long relief.

TRWI7, could you be more specific in providing the actual names of the prospects the cubs gave up? who is their 7th best prospect and what is the best name ever ?

As for the cubs giving up their 7th best prosect to acquire him, I have to wonder how great their 7th best prospect actually is. looking at the annual BA prospect handbook for 2007, it shows the Cubs' 7 prospect at the begining of the year was 3b Scott Moore. it said his future with the cubs would be as a reserve or trade bait. if this is the guy they gave away, then it's no real loss for the Cubs.

as far as baseball names go, the Cubs have a lot of prospects with great names. there's Rocky Cherry; Pie; (but no Cherry Pie) Jesus; Mark Reed ( I always liked that name) ; Norwood; Jake Fox; Pie; papelbon; jae-kuk Ryu to name a few cool names.

I watched that broadcast, Big Reed, and to me it sounded more like Brenly speculation/wishing-he-was-a-manager-still than, "This is officially what the Cubs are doing." No offense, just wanted to weigh in that this was merely a suggestion of possibility by their color guy.

Piniella mentioned the "sort-of 6-man rotation" in his postgame press conference. It sounds like they'll only start Trachsel if it's a good matchup or if someone needs a day off. Lou said they haven't set out a schedule for him yet (he said he'd figure all that out once he gets to the park tomorrow), but they're anticipating his first start to be during the Dodgers series.

too live- I was listening to the radio broadcast. I would never intentionally actually watch a cubs game on TV. I'm not sure if the radio and TV guy are the same, but I will agree the announcer sounded as if he was the manager and this is what's going to happen for a fact. when in reality, he has no clue what's going to happen.

Although I would have to believe traschel would probably start in the double header against the cards. That sounded realistic as that would enable the rest of their starters to keep on their normal 4 days off rotation.

it was inevitable that Rocky cherry would be traded as the Cubs did not want a box score that included cherry pie.

The reason are simple we still have road games to play and they can"t win on the road

Right now, the Brewers have about a one in five short of making the playoffs, according to BP. BP predictions that the Cubs will finish with just below 84 wins (after today's lose). If the Brewers can win 84 games, they probably have a 50% shot at that being good enough. 16 home games, 13 road games left. 7-6 on the road means an 11-5 record at home. I guess if you think the Brewers home/road split has everything to do with the quality of the club, it's a good thing right now, since they have more home games, right? They've played about as good at home as they have as bad on the road, after all.

The suggestion that a team that wakes up on Aug 31 2.5 GB has no chance of winning is a difficult one for me to agree with. Anything can happen. If one of the Brewers starters catches fire or Fielder gets red hot and hits 15 homers down the stretch it could change things in a hurry. It's not likely these things will happen but stranger things have happened. We are just 2.5 games back. That's nothing. I certainly am not trembling with fear because the Cubs got Traeschel. Hardly a pennant clinching deal.
