Power likely to set another attendance record

Jack Bogaczyk

Charleston Daily Mail Sports Editor

West Virginia Power Manager Mike Guerrero wants to remind baseball fans the South Atlantic League club really isn't heading into its last homestand of the 2007 season.

"We still do have the playoffs," Guerrero said.

The Power does open its last regular-season homestand tonight at Appalachian Power Park, as Lexington visits for the first of two games, and Guerrero sends right-hander Shawn Ferguson (4-1) to the mound.

Greensboro comes to Charleston to end the SAL regular season with games Saturday night, Sunday afternoon and Labor Day Monday.

The Power, thanks to its first-half title (48-20), opens the best-of-three Northern Division playoffs Wednesday, likely at Hickory -- leading by four games with five to play.

West Virginia has Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) at home on Sept. 7 and 8 at the East End ballpark. The Power won the season series with the Crawdads, 9-4.

While the Power is likely to set a Class A local franchise attendance season record Friday -- the club needs 4,725 to top last year's 239,721 total -- Guerrero is more concerned about what's on the field for a team that's 31-32 in the second half and in fifth place in the SAL Northern.

"We've been playing pretty well lately, which is what you want when you're heading to the playoffs," said Guerrero, whose two-year Power record is an impressive 153-114. "Even the ones we've lost lately, we've been in the game, battling to the end.

"I'm optimistic about the playoffs, especially the way we've been playing. We're hitting the ball, and we've been fundamentally sound. If we can pitch and play defense consistently, we'll be fine."

The Power is coming off a 3-2 road trip. In its last six games, West Virginia has belted 13 homers, and the 122 for the season are a club record dating to the 1987 arrival of the SAL in town.

Steve Chapman, whose 23 are a Charleston Class A franchise record, leads the club. Four others -- Andrew Lefave (17), Kenny Holmberg (15), Taylor Green (14) and Brent Brewer (10) -- join Chapman in double-figure dingers.

In only 18 games, outfielder Matt LaPorta, Milwaukee's No. 1 pick in the June draft, has seven homers and 22 RBI and is batting .333.

"He's been a really good addition for us," Guerrero said of the $2 million bonus man. "He has all of the appropriate tools for a No. 1 pick, and he's showing that.

"There's nothing there that's surprised me."

LeFave also leads the SAL in hitting (.345) by a comfortable 12 points, trying to become the city's first pro baseball batting champ since infielder Jack Perconte (.346) led the International League for the Class AAA Charlies in 1983.

The Power's 48 first-half wins were a franchise record for a half-season, but the roster underwent several significant changes due to Milwaukee player movement. After a mid-second half lull that included a seven-game losing skid, the Power has rebounded and has won 11 of its last 16.

If the Power can go at least 3-2 on the homestand, Guerrero also will have a distinction of sorts.

Not only would the 39-year-old Dominican reach 500 career victories as a minor league manager. Guerrero (497-385) also would be the first Charleston skipper to guide his club through two straight winning full seasons since the Charlies' Jim Beauchamp in 1977 and '78.

A 3-2 finish would leave the Power at .500 in the second half (34-34). The parent Brewers would be the first to have four half-seasons of at least .500 in back-to-back years in Charleston's 21 seasons in the low Class A league.

Nice way to end the season...

Arizona Box Score:

Joey Paciorek hits a three-run HR in the bottom of the 8th, one of only two Brewer hits. Paciorek only got the chance because of a catcher's throwing error on a strikeout. 24 combined K's and 12 combined walks in the game...

Some interesting action tonight, but I'm afraid I'll be unavailable during the overnight. Normally I'd send a private note to our "staff", but I'll toss a more public note here to see if we have a volunteer this evening, staff or not. Don't worry about getting all fancy and following the normal patterns, maybe it's time for a change of pace for an evening. Thanks in advance.

Final: Palm Beach 4, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Box Score:

This offense has really gone quiet as of late. Two hits by Mat Gamel (including his 36th double of the year) gets his average back up to .299 after creeping below .300 for the first time in a long, long time. Three bullpen pitches combine for 4 scoreless innnings in relief of David Welch, who just hasn't been as sharp as of late.

Brevard County Game Log:

A 3-run bomb in the first for Palm Beach was enough in this game. Far too many quick innings in this game for the Manatees offense. Tough to see Cole Gillespie, who has gone cool over the last week after being hot for 6+ weeks, strike out in the 6th with the bases loaded, even if there were 2 outs.

Final: Lexington 7, West Virginia 5

West Virginia Site Game Summary

LEGENDS SURGE LATE, BEAT POWER

The Lexington Legends plated three runs in the ninth inning of Thursday night's game at Appalachian Power Park and rallied from four down to defeat the West Virginia Power 7-5 to take the third game of the series.

Taylor Green began the second inning with a double and moved over to third base on a groundball hit by John Alonso before scoring on a passed ball. An RBI single from Greg Buchanan tied the game in the top of the third. Jimmy Mojica's groundout in the bottom of the third plated Charlie Fermaint who tripled to begin the inning. In the fourth inning Andy Bouchie knocked in Alonso with an RBI double and scored on Brent Brewer's inside the park homerun.

The Legends began their comeback in the sixth inning when Eric Taylor smacked a two-run double. In the eighth inning Taylor ripped an RBI single and Jhon Florentino reached on a fielder's choice which scored Ronald Ramirez. Lexington was down to their final out in the ninth inning when Nick Moresi tripled down the left field line. On the very next pitch, Ronald Ramirez hit a groundball that went through the legs of Taylor Green which scored Moresi. Greg Buchanan blasted a two-run homer one pitch later to give Lexington the lead.

Kyle DeYoung (5-8) tossed a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen to get the win and Matt Kretzschmar was tagged with the loss after giving up three unearned runs in the ninth inning. Donovan Hand allowed an unearned run on three hits over five solid innings in his third start with the Power.

The Power fell to 79-53 overall and 31-33 in the second half, while the Legends improved to 58-78 overall and 27-39 in the second half. Fermaint, Brewer, Alonso and Mojica all had multi-hit games for the Power. Taylor Green and Matt LaPorta both hit safely and extended their hitting streaks. Green has hit safely in eight games and LaPorta has hit safely in ten straight.

The Power but will finish the four game series against the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. The Power will start right hander Alex Periard (7-7, 3.53) and the Legends will start left hander Dave Qualben (10-8, 3.92). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

West Virginia Box Score:

It's hard not to get down on a game that sounds all too familiar: The Power score 5 runs in the first 4 innings, but lose this one late. Mojica, Alonso, Brewer and Fermaint all with 2 hit nights, including Brewer's 11th home run of the year. LaPorta with one base hit, but of course it goes for extra bases (a double). Donovan Hand with a nice night starting this game after coming out of the Power bullpen for a few weeks.

West Virginia Game Log:

It's not hard envisioning Brewer flying around the basepaths for his inside-the-park home run in the 4th. All of the damage in the 9th comes with 2 outs, with a two-run bomb following Taylor Green's 23rd error of the season. You're better off not looking past the 7th inning in this one.

Ok, here's a slump buster. The person that gets all five questions right, all relating to former or current Brewers farmhands, will win a picture of Matt LaPorta taking a home run swing as part of the 2006 Cape Cod League All Star Game. Please do your best not to look up the answers while flexing your knowledge nugget muscle:

1. This current Brewer was named the Midwest League's best defensive shortstop despite commiting 40 errors in 2000 and was also named the California League's most exciting player in 2001 according to Baseball America in an annual survey polling the respective league managers rating the best tools.

2. This former Brewer hit the first home run ever at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

3. Overshadowed by a team full of current and future stars, this former Brewer, one of the organization's better non-drafted free agents ever, led the 1979 Brewers in OBP and SLG and was one point away from the team's lead in batting average among regulars.

4. Name the three current Brewers farmhands that were named to the Cape Cod League All-League team in 2006.

5. Name the five current Brewers farmhands that were selected to participate in the Aflac All-American Classic, a high school All-Star game of sorts that began in 2003.

Sounds Defeat Royals In Home Finale, 6-2

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their regular season home schedule on a high note on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, defeating the division-rival Omaha Royals, 6-2, in the finale of a four-game set.

Nashville (86-54) recorded its ninth consecutive winning homestand (6-4) and finished the year with 48 victories at Greer Stadium, their most home wins since joining the Pacific Coast League in 1998.

With a crowd of 3,983 fans on hand for the regular season home finale, the Sounds finished with a seasonal attendance of 411,959, the team's second-highest total in the last 14 years.

Sounds starter Adam Pettyjohn (12-4) pulled into a tie for the PCL lead with his 12th Nashville victory and earned his 16th overall win of the year, one shy of the minor league lead, which is currently held by two hurlers

The southpaw allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven batters over seven-plus innings before leaving the game in the top of the eighth after being struck on the right shin by a Derek Wathan single.

Pettyjohn's 16 wins this season are one shy of the minor league lead, which is currently held by two hurlers.

The visitors took an early 1-0 lead when Mitch Maier drilled a leadoff solo homer to right off Pettyjohn. The blast was his third of the series and his 14th of the year.

Nashville tied it in the bottom of the third when Chris Barnwell single to open the inning and later scored unearned on an errant throw by Royals catcher Paul Phillips following a Tyler Lumsden wild pitch.

Omaha used the longball again in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead on Justin Huber's third home run of the series - a two-out solo shot to center off Pettyjohn.

The Sounds grabbed their first lead of the evening in the bottom of the frame, pulling ahead 3-2 with a pair of runs off Lumsden. With one out, Charles Thomas singled and scored when Andy Abad followed with an RBI double. After Mike Rivera singled to put runners on the corners, Chris Barnwell (3-for-3) plated Abad with the go-ahead run on a single to left.

The Nashville pitching staff toppled a franchise record in the seventh inning when Pettyjohn struck out Chris Lubanski to end the frame. The punchout was the club's 1,118th of the season, one better than the previous record of 1,117 set by the 2005 staff.

Vinny Rottino (2-for-3) gave the home team some breathing room in the bottom of the seventh inning with a three-run home run off Omaha reliever Jarod Plummer, who made his career Triple-A debut in the contest. The four-bagger, which scored Ozzie Chavez and Crabbe, was Rottino's 12th big fly of the season and gave the Sounds a 6-2 cushion.

Chavez extended his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games with a seventh-inning single.

Lumsden (9-6) took the loss for Omaha after surrendering three runs (two earned) on eight hits in his six frames of action.

The Sounds travel to Memphis on Friday to complete the 2007 regular season with a four-game series at Auto Zone Park against the cross-state rival Redbirds. Nashville has won eight of the 12 games between the clubs in 2007.

Right-hander Mark DiFelice (4-1, 2.73) will start Friday's 7:10 p.m. series opener and face rehabbing Memphis left-hander Mark Mulder, who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the year.

Baseball will return to Greer Stadium on the weekend of September 7-9, when the Sounds will participate in postseason action for the fourth time in the last five years. Nashville will host the final three games, as necessary, of the best-of-five American Conference Finals against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Three teams are still alive in the four-team American Southern Division with four games to play.

Nashville Audio: Rottino's 3-run home run:

http://www.nashvillesounds.com/audio/2007/Highlight%208-30.mp3

Nashville Box Score:

Rottino with a 3-run jack in the 7th to break the game open, while also adding a double and a walk, and Chris Barnwell goes 3 for 3 with a walk as the Sounds faced one of the harder throwing lefties in the minors in Tyler Lumsden. Adam Pettyjohn goes 7 strong as Steve Bray tosses 2 scoreless innings in relief.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_08_30_omaaaa_nasaaa_1

Nashville Game Log:

Pettyjohn's 2 ER were both on solo shots, one to leadoff the game. Otherwise a fairly clean game by Pettyjohn facing a prospect-laden team despite this note in the 8th:

Derek Wathan singles on a ground ball to pitcher Adam Pettyjohn.

Injury Delay.

With pitching as thin as it is, we certainly hope Pettyjohn's shin is ok.

Final: Huntsville 1, Birmingham 4

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Gonzalez Gets It Done Against Stars

Gio Gonzalez worked seven strong innings and another timely home run doomed Huntsville in a 4-1 loss to Birmingham Thursday night through steady rain at Regions Park in the opener of a five-game series to close the regular season. The Barons improved to 29-37 in the second half and squared the season series at eight games apiece, while the Stars lost for an 11th time in their last 15 games to fall to 35-30 in the second half and saw their lead over Tennessee in the North Division trimmed to a half game after the Smokies win at Carolina.

Alcides Escobar led off the fourth inning with a double, moved to third base on a Steve Sollmann sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit to right field by Adam Heether. Gonzalez did not allow another hit and finished his performance walking one and fanning eight, the tenth time in 27 turns he fanned at least eight opposing hitters. Josh Fields worked a perfect eighth inning and Fernando Hernandez worked around a one-out triple by Escobar in the ninth to earn his ninth save. The Stars have now been held to fewer than four runs in seven of their last 10 games.

Stars' starter Sam Narron blanked the Barons on three singles through five innings before Sean Smith legged out a two-out infield single and scored when Victor Mercedes followed with a two-run home run to left field, his sixth of the season, to put the home team on top 2-1. Narron was lifted after six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out three. He lasted at least six innings for an eighth time in his last nine turns but suffered the loss to fall to 7-9, with three of the losses to the Barons.

David Cook doubled in a one-out run against Jeff Housman in the seventh and Smith capped a four-hit night with a home run against Luis Pena in the eighth to finish the scoring. It was the first long ball for Smith and the first allowed by Pena. The Stars have allowed a home run in 12 of their last 15 games and 19 during that stretch.

The series continues Friday night with right-hander Corey Thurman taking the hill for the Stars against Barons' left-hander Wes Whisler. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard on 770 AM WVNN and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Four hits, two of which were a rare showing of extra-base power by Alcides Escobar (a double and a triple) pretty much shows how much the Stars, Manatees and Power have been struggling at the plate recently, wasting a strong start by Sam Narron. In the Stars defense, they were facing one of the minor leagues top pitchers all season, Gio Gonzalez, who now has 185 strikeouts (which leads the minor leagues) in 150 innings pitched.

Huntsville Game Log:

The games that I have filled in with the link reports, it seems as though there is an oddly high number of caught stealings in games that Don Money manages (which according to some first-hand reports is nothing new). For any team struggling to score runs, base-running mistakes are especially costly.

Final: Billings 7, Helena 3

Helena Site Game Summary:

Brewers Lose 7-3

The Helena Brewers lost Thursday evening 7-3, to the Billings Mustangs. The Mustangs started off the scoring in the 2nd inning with one run, and then tacked on another in the fourth. Helena responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth, thanks to the hot bat of Caleb Rindl. The tie ball game would not last for long however, as the Mustangs came back the next inning with three runs. Brandon Waring, the league leader in home runs showed off his power with a three run bomb, to put his total to 19 on the season. Helena could only muster one more run the rest of the game, and Billings put up two more for good measure in the ninth inning, putting the game at its final score of 7-3.

Kyle Lotzkar made a fine first impression for the Billings Mustangs going four hitless innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. It was the first appearance for Lotzkar after being promoted a couple of days earlier. Adam Pointer ended up with the win for the Stangs, coming on in relief in the fifth, going two innings with two earned runs. Jose Garcia was saddled with the loss for Helena, pitching the final three innings giving up five in the process.

Helena will face Billings again Friday night at 7:05, at Kindrick Field.

Not to poke fun at the Helena staff that wrote this, but it seems as though Caleb Gindl and Curt Rindal have been merged into one player.

Helena Box Score:

Brandon Waring, the hottest hitter in the Pioneer League, really had the H-Crew's number in this series, as did the entire Mustangs team. Lee Haydel adds a couple of more knocks, his 7th multi-hit game in his last 9 games. No extra-base hits leads to a pretty meager offensive output. Jose Garcia with 3 pretty ugly innings in late piggy-back relief.

Helena Game Log:

Some rather quick innings for the H-Crew's offense, who squandered a huge opportunity in the 8th.
