I know this is probably out of place, but did anyone see on the MILB page that WV only placed one player on the season end all-star squad? That was Taylor Green at 3B.....What does it take for our guys to get a little respect....I don't see how Andrew LeFave can be left off anything with his numbers! Here's hoping are guys put up big post-season performances and get some respect!

wvpowerblkwel, I'm with you. LeFave just might be the player I'd vote for minor league offensive player of the year. Chapman also had a fine year. Holmberg and Green with fine seasons. Alonso solid at a still young age.

Final: Arizona Royals 16, Arizona Brewers 9

Arizona Box Score:

19-year-old catcher Jesse D'Amico, who has been sidelined for all but one game prior to this one, gets his first base hit; 3B Joey Paciorek walks four times and has his OBP at .404, power should eventually come; RHP Rolando Pascual takes the loss, what a lost season for the high-priced signee; some of the Maryvale pitchers finished strong this week, but 20-year-old RHP Jorge Crespo didn't retire any of the seven men he faced, although the first reached on an error; not quite 19 years old yet, 6'7" RHP Luis Jimenez with a strong three-inning stint, striking out five; the season ends, somewhat mercifully, with a day game Thursday...

Final: Billings (Reds) 15, Helena 7

MiLB.com:

Waring, Mustangs overpower Brewers

There's hot, there's torrid and then there's whatever Brandon Waring is.

Waring homered twice for the third time in four games and collected a career-high six RBIs on Wednesday, powering the Billings Mustangs to a 15-7 victory over the Helena Brewers.

Waring smacked a two-run shot in the first inning and a grand slam, his Pioneer League-leading 18th homer of the season and seventh in four nights.

"I've been feeling good. Every time I come back to the dugout, the guys all have smiles on their faces," he said.

It would be hard not to smile at what Waring has been doing lately. He's hitting .465 (20-for-43) with 10 homers, 18 RBIs and 17 runs scored in his last 11 games. Seven of those roundtrippers have come in his last 20 at-bats. Before his current tear, however, he was mired in a 4-for-37 slump that snapped nine games.

"I was slumping pretty badly a few weeks ago," the 21-year-old third baseman admitted. "I've been able to keep my hands back and see the ball longer. There's been some good games and some bad ones. It's great to end the season on a high note."

Selected by Cincinnati in the seventh round of the 2007 draft, Waring has raised his batting average to .304. He is second in the league with 55 RBIs, four behind Idaho Falls' Clint Robinson.

Brandon Menchaca went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and four runs scored, Jason Bour collected three hits and two RBIs and Kyle Maunus and Francis Meade drove in two runs apiece for the Mustangs (15-14).

Reliever Harris Honeycutt (2-2) allowed a hit and a walk while fanning two over 3 2/3 scoreless frames for the win. Billings starter Enerio Del Rosario surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits, striking out one and walking one in 4 1/3 innings.

Mike Goetz smacked a three-run homer, his third, Steffan Wilson hit a two-run shot, his ninth, and Anthony Wycklendt added a solo blast, his fifth, for the Brewers (14-15).

Helena starter Evan Anundsen (6-5) gave up 10 runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. He fell to 0-3 against Billings. The Mustangs scored six in the fourth inning, sparked by Angel Cabrera's lined shot that hit Anundsen in the leg and resulted in an error. Anundsen was OK, but could not recover his poise in the inning.

The Mustangs now travel to Helena for another important three-game set. The series opener is tonight at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Helena Box Score:

Nice reward for just-turned 18-year-old third baseman Edgar Trejo, who was officially an Arizona League All-Star -- a trip to Helena, he grounds out in his first Pioneer League at-bat, committed an error; RHP Evan Anundsesn's ERA now 5.10 -- his ground ball ratio remains insane, at 3.16, but opponents are also hitting .277 against him...

Charleston Gazette:

Power home to close regular season

With the start of the South Atlantic League playoffs less than a week away, the West Virginia Power closes out the regular season with a five-game homestand, beginning Thursday night at 7:05 (6:05 Central) with the first of two games against the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park.

The Power (31-32 second half) comes into tonight's game with the Legends on a three-game winning streak. West Virginia concluded its last road trip with wins at Lexington Monday and Tuesday.

The Power, which earned its playoff spot by winning the Northern Division first-half title, will start the best-of-three first-round playoff series Wednesday on the road, most likely at Hickory. The Crawdads (38-26 in the second half) hold a 4 1/2-game lead over Lakewood with five games remaining and can clinch the playoff berth opposite the Power during their final road trip to Asheville and Lexington.

The second and (if necessary) third playoff games would be played next Friday and Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power is 9-4 on the season against Hickory, 3-3 in the second half.

While the team gets ready for the playoffs, several players are chasing individual honors and milestones:

Power outfielder Andrew Lefave continues to lead the Sally League with a .345 batting average, 12 points higher than Greensboro's John Raynor. Third baseman Taylor Green ranks third in the league with a .330 mark.

Outfielder Steve Chapman looks to add to his Charleston Class A franchise record of 23 home runs.

Outfielder Chuckie Caufield is two runs shy of 100 on the season, which ranks him second in the league.

On the negative side, shortstop Brent Brewer has struck out 167 times, most in the league.

Relief pitcher Donovan Hand, who has four saves since being moved into the closer's role, has not issued a walk in 20 innings.

Final: Palm Beach (Cardinals) 10, Brevard County 7

MiLB.com:

Yarbrough, Cardinals top Manatees

Brandon Yarbrough had three hits and three RBIs as Palm Beach dropped host Brevard County, 10-7, on Wednesday.

Yarbrough's RBIs came during a seven-run fifth inning when he ripped a bases-loaded triple to give the Cardinals (33-33) a 7-5 lead. The 22-year-old catcher, who also had two singles, collected his Florida State League-leading 11th triple and is tied for fifth in the Minor Leagues.

Mark Shorey and Luke Gorsett each chipped in with two hits and one RBI, while Shorey scored twice for Palm Beach.

Eddie Degerman (4-4) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks while fanning five in five innings. Luke Gregerson struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 28th save.

Cole Gillespie slammed a three-run homer, his 12th, in the first and Lorenzo Cain hit a solo shpt, his second, in the seventh.

Rafael Lluberes (6-10) lost for the second time in his last three starts after coughing up seven runs -- six earned -- on seven hits, three walks and a wild pitch with five strikeouts in four-plus innings. -- Michael Echan/MLB.com

Brevard County Box Score:

Second baseman and cleanup hitter Mike Bell 3-for-3, on base four times; Chris Errecart 4-for-his-last-34, hitting .207 in August after posting a .190 mark in July; LHP Brae Wright helps the pen by working an inning on his "throw day"...

Final: Omaha (Royals) 3, Nashville 2, 15 innings

Nashville Site Game Summary:

http://www.nashvillesounds.com/news/news.asp?newsId=2537

NASHVILLE - Omaha shortstop Mike Aviles belted a two-out solo homer in the top of the 15th inning to propel the visiting Royals to a 3-2 win over the Nashville Sounds to culminate a marathon afternoon for the clubs on Wednesday at Greer Stadium.

The blast, which careened off the scoreboard in left-center field, came on a 1-0 pitch from Sounds reliever Marino Salas.

The game, which was delayed for two hours and four minutes at the start due to rain, finished over six hours after the scheduled noon start time.

It was the Sounds' longest game of the season and the club's longest since their PCL record-tying 24-inning marathon against New Orleans on May 5 & 6, 2006.

Omaha broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when Mitch Maier led off with a double against Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter and scored the game's first run three batters later on a Mike Sweeney sacrifice fly.

Sounds centerfielder Callix Crabbe tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a one-out solo homer to right off Royals starter Luke Hochevar. The blast was Crabbe's eighth four-bagger of the season, a new career high.

AUDIO: Callix Crabbe Game-Tying HR

Nashville grabbed a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Jose Macias laid down a well-executed suicide squeeze bunt as Laynce Nix raced home from third to score the go-ahead run. Nix scored in unearned fashion after reaching to open the frame on a fielding error by second baseman Fernando Cortez.

The Royals evened the score in the top of the eighth when Maier led off with a line-drive solo home run to right on a 1-0 offering from Nashville reliever Chris Spurling. It was the outfielder's 13th longball of the season.

The Sounds had a chance to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the frame when Crabbe led off with his team-leading ninth triple of the year but was thrown out at the plate on the play after the relay throw from right field skipped past the third baseman. Hochevar alertly backed up the play and gunned down the Nashville leadoff man at home.

Neither team scored again until the top of the 15th inning when Aviles mashed his game-ending blast.

Nashville infielder Ozzie Chavez extended his longest hitting streak of the year to nine games with a third-inning single.

Thad Markray (7-7) earned the victory for Omaha after working three scoreless frames of relief.

Salas (0-1) took a loss in his first career Triple-A decision after allowing the game-winning run in his two innings of work.

Nashville starter Zach Jackson worked 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, before leaving the contest early after being hit on the pitching hand by a Matt Tupman single in the top of the fifth inning.

The Sounds wrap up their 2007 regular season home schedule with a 7 p.m. finale against the Royals on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, the final Thirsty Thursday of the summer at the ballpark. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (11-4, 3.96) will man the bump for the Sounds to take on Omaha southpaw Tyler Lumsden (9-5, 6.04).

Nashville Box Score:

Callix Crabbe in center field -- Frank Kremblas working hard to develop his versatility in the second half of this season...

After 2-hour rain delay, Nashville loses in 15th

By TYLER BLANK

Tennessean Staff Writer

The Sounds survived a two-hour rain delay, their longest game of the year and superb Omaha pitching, but they could not hang on in a 3-2 15-inning loss to Omaha on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

Omaha shortstop Mike Aviles hit a solo home run off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left field to give the Royals the victory.

"Our pitching kept us in there, and we weren't able to bang out a big hit earlier in the game," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said.

The Sounds already have clinched the Pacific Coast League's American Conference Northern Division with five games left in the regular season. Omaha already had been eliminated from playoff contention.

About 50 people stuck around through 15 innings - Nashville's longest game of the year. Plus, the noon start time was pushed back to 2 p.m. after rain drenched Greer Stadium for a couple of hours. The fans who did stick around arrived about 11:30 a.m. and didn't leave until 6:15 p.m.

The Sounds were no match for Omaha starter Luke Hochevar. The former UT star allowed six hits through eight innings while giving up two runs, only one of them earned. He struck out five and issued no walks.

"He threw the ball well," Kremblas said of Hochevar. "He looked like he had pretty good stuff."

The Sounds managed just eight hits the entire game. "They threw the ball well," Kremblas said.

So did Sounds pitchers, though. Six pitchers allowed 12 hits and three runs while striking out 13.

Hit streak: Second baseman Ozzie Chavez extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Extra innings: Wednesday's game was the Sounds' 10th extra-inning one of the year. The Sounds are now 4-1 in extra innings at Greer Stadium and 5-5 in extra-inning games overall.

What they said: "They got a big two-out home run that won them the game." - Kremblas after the loss.

Dickey named top PCL pitcher

By TYLER BLANK

Tennessean Staff Writer

An up-and-down regular season for Nashville native R.A. Dickey is ending on a high.

The Sounds pitcher was named on Wednesday the Pacific Coast League's pitcher of the year after posting a 12-6 record this season.

"It's always fun to perform well in front of family and friends," Dickey said. "You want to do the best you can possibly do, and it was nice that it happened here."

The MBA graduate and former UT star's season did not get off to an ideal start. He was taken out of the starting rotation in mid-May after going 1-4 in seven starts with a 6.17 ERA. Dickey swapped spots in the rotation with reliever Jose Capellan.

"I didn't really have a feel for it," Dickey said of his early season performance.

Dickey's year got better when he rejoined the rotation in mid-June after Tim Dillard was sent to the bullpen.

Strong finish

He has gone 8-2 with a 2.57 ERA since mid-June.

"It's about committing to the pitch; trial and error, finding what works best," Dickey said. "When I found out how to do that, the better I became."

Dickey, who is in his first season with the Milwaukee organization, was also named to the league's All-PCL team Monday. Previous to this season, Dickey had been in the Texas Rangers organization for 10 years.

Dickey has a 3.80 ERA, which ranks third among PCL pitchers and ninth in Triple-A. His 12 victories are tied for second in the PCL, and his three complete games are tied for the league lead.

"It's more of a reflection of a good team, being in a lot of games, scoring runs, playing good defense," Dickey said. "There's no way to get any kind of an award without meriting what needs to be properly merited. Our team has been collectively pretty ridiculous this year."

Dickey is tied for fifth in the PCL with 115 strikeouts.

The last Nashville pitcher to win a pitcher of the year award was Scott Ruffcorn, who won it in 1994 when the Sounds were with the American Association.

Dickey's next start is Saturday at Memphis.

Stars' rainout muddles pitching rotation plan

Huntsville holds 1 1/2-game lead in North Division

By BRAD SHEPARD

For the Huntsville Times

Mother Nature tossed a curveball into the Southern League playoff picture Wednesday night.

After torrential downpours saturated Joe Davis Stadium's playing surface and filled the dugouts all the way to the tunnel entrances, the Stars' game with West Tenn was postponed. It will not be made up, either.

So, what does that mean for the playoffs?

"It means there won't be a tie, let's put it that way," Stars manager Don Money said. "Unless the other teams are rained out. Now it'll be a half-game one way or the other."

The two teams chasing Huntsville in the North Division - Tennessee and Chattanooga - played each other again Wednesday with Chattanooga winning 5-4. Now, the Stars' lead is 1 1/2 games.

Also on Wednesday, the league determined how tiebreakers would occur if for some reason there was a deadlock at the end of the second half.

If Huntsville ties with Chattanooga, there will be a one-game playoff at Joe Davis on Tuesday.

If the Stars and Smokies tie, the one-game playoff will be on Wednesday at Joe Davis.

If the Smokies and Lookouts tie, the one-game playoff will be Tuesday in Chattanooga.

If the Stars keep their lead and go on to win both halves, they will play Tennessee because the Smokies have the best overall record above the Lookouts.

There also has been one potential schedule change: If the Stars play the Smokies, Sept. 8's road game has been moved up to 4 p.m. to accommodate the Tennessee Vols' home game against Southern Miss. Huntsville wants to take care of business and win both halves, especially because if it doesn't, the team that wins the second half will have home-field advantage.

The playoffs will start Sept. 6 at 7:05 with two games at Joe Davis. If the Stars win both halves, they'll play two at home, one on the road and two more at home. If they lose, they'll play two at home and the next three on the road.

Got all that?

The Stars aren't bothering themselves with scenarios, but one thing that is bothersome is the rainout placed them in a precarious situation as far as the pitching rotation goes.

Money said the Stars had a rotation worked out for the playoffs, but now they're not sure.

"Things might change now that (Sam) Narron didn't pitch tonight," pitching coach Rich Sauveur said.

"We talked about it and had one set up," Money said of a rotation. "Now we don't have one set up."

Lindsay Gulin appeared to be the clear-cut leader for Game 1 honors before dropping his past three decisions.

Narron said even though starting the first game is not a big deal, it would be nice to get the call.

"Everybody wants to start the first thing out in the playoffs," he said.

"It's an honor more than anything. They haven't said anything to us. It could be any number of us."
