September Prediction Thread

Here's a forum for everyone who wants to lay out how the season will end. It's the only "official" place the haters can come back and say they told us and where the lovers can lay out unrealistic and dreamy stretch runs.

As of the time of this posting, there are 32 games left and the Brewers are .500.

How's it gonna end?

17-15, being optimistic. 82-80 for the season. I wish I would have been more towards losing a bunch or more towards winning a bunch, but I'm not to confident either way so I wimped out and picked a close to .500 record the rest of the way.

Cubs 84-78

Brewers 82-80

Cardinals 80-82

especially after just reading his article, I'll be interested to hear Rluz's opinion here. It's hard to be objective right now, given that the team can turn this skid around and get hot at any time...

Here is a prediction thread from about a month ago, for the sake of reference.

In an even older division prediction thread (which I can no longer find), I gave the Cubs a slight edge to win it. I had no idea then that the Cards would crawl back into it. Even so, I still think the Cubs will win the division.

CHI: 85-77

MIL: 80-82

STL: 79-83

My prediction is definitely on the sunny side.

1-2 at Cubs

2-1 vs. Pirates

3-0 vs. Astros

1-2 at Reds

1-2 at Pirates

2-1 vs. Reds

2-1 at Astros

2-2 at Braves

2-1 vs. Cardinals

3-1 vs. Padres

The Braves just aren't as frightening to me as they were...I think the Crew can take two there. And the last week at home is huge with this team, regardless of it being two good teams. I think 19-14 is completely possible if Sheets is 100%.

I can't make a prediction like that yet. I must know if Sheets will be back and healthy for the entire stretch or not first.

That sad, I'm almost ready to sob uncontrollably because the season's almost over!

Sticking with my original prediction, Brewers win 82 and take 2nd place to the Cardinals.

That is pretty close to what I said at the start of the year except I had the Brewers at 85 wins.

I blame Wang.

Im going to go out on a limb and say that the Cards COULD win it, and I would laugh my butt of if they did because there a complete joke. The Cubs spent 300 Million during the off-season, and there still having trouble winning. The Cubs got back into it, but its really hard for me to imagine them holding on. They got strong for a while, but there just like the Brewers.

I honestly think that if the Cubs and Brewers keep playing the way they are, it'll be::::::

Cubs/Brewers keep playing at this level:

1. St. Louis

2. Chicago

3. Brewers

If the Cubs or Brewers wakup:

1. Cubs/ Brewers

2 Cubs / Brewers

3. Cardinals

The Cubs are one win away from having as many wins this year as they did all of last year though.

Where are the realists? Bravo for having so much optimism in your heart. However, given the weary state of our pitching I can't see the Brewers winning more than 13 out of the last 32. Generously giving them those 13 wins makes them 78-84. That will be a third place finish at best. Cincinatti will finish within a game of the Brewers either a game ahead, behind, or tied with Milwaukee. A fourth place finish is definitely within reason.

Once again, I see the Brewers winning only 10 more games this year to finish at 75-87 in 5th place behind Cincy and Pittsburgh.

Actually, you said, "at most" in your original statement. If you want to claim making the prediction, "once again", your prediction should be lower, by definition. And to insinuate that a prediction better than a 10-22 is "rosy" is pretty silly, IMO.

I appreciate that the above comment was made innocently enough (the following comments aren't really directed at you) but I'm sick of people labeling anyone not willing to simply base their predictions on the terrible play of the last month as being optimistic. It seems that whenever the Brewers go on a losing streak, we are told that to project future performance, it's as simple as assuming the unexpectadly terrible play tocontinue. Does that really make sense? I was called a fool for not realizing that the Brewers were done after they were no hit in Detroit. "Look at the facts!, I was told. Then the Brewers won 9 of 10 and everyone went back to being optimistic.

As for the state of our pitching, I see our worst starting pitcher hopefully being replaced by our best in a couple days. That should be a huge boost.

Even if you look at the season as a whole, the picture isn't too bright. The Brewers have been outscorted on the season and their raw stats suggest that they are the definition of mediocre. Most preseason projections put them at around .500 as well. A very safe prediction would be 81 wins and second place, so I'll make it here.

Of course, they could be a perfectly mediocre team, talentwise, and still win 84 games and make the playoffs, so there's always hope. BP puts the odds of winning the Central at 56/25/18 for the Cubs, Brewers and Cardinals, respectively. I don't think people fully appreciate how much luck will play a role in who wins the NL Central. Three close games decided by three balls bouncing a particular way, could be the difference between another losing season or the playoffs for the Brewers. As cliche as it is, it really is better to be lucky than good. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Brewers will finish 78-84, tied with the Reds for 3rd.

Cubs will win it with 85-77 record. Cardinals will be 81-81.

I wish it could be different but the Cubs have the pitching edge here and both the Cubs and the Cards have a huge managerial edge.

Let's hear your predictions, it has finally happened, your Milwaukee Brewers are Honest to Goodness in a pennant race on September 1st.

Here's mine-

Cardinals, 16-15, finishing at 81-81

Cubs, 15-14, finishing at 83-79

Brewers, 15-12, with one game left, standing at 82-79....do they win that last one to force a playoff?

Never mind Packers-Titans, this is Brewers-Padres, September 30.

Lights out, steel cage, no referee, loser leave town....

If they are going to miss the playoffs, let's make that for certain this week. Getting eliminated during the final series would hurt more.

I'll take the optimistic approach, which I enjoy taking...

Brewers: 83 (16-12)

Cubs: 81 (13-16)

Cardinals: 81 (16-15)

Brewers 84-78 (17-11) - Hoping they make it to my preseason prediction

Cubs 84-78 (16-13) - Forcing a sweet one game playoff for the division

Cardinals 79-83 (14-17) - Long stretch will hopefully take a toll on some of those aging position players

question: who holds the tiebreakers for hosting the one-game playoff vs. either CHC or STL? Or do they do it via coin flip? I haven't paid attention to this for years.

Optimistic Approach (ya thats right my optimistic one)

Cardinals - 84

Brewers - 82

Cubs - 81

Hate to say it, but while the Brewers and Cubs have been out sleeping while playing there games, the Cards are in this thing, and as weak as they are, and how laughable it'll be to see them get first place, they'll capitalize on it. LaRusa knows how the game is played, and has gotten this team this far, he won't stop there. They may be over achieving, but LaRusa is my NL Manager of the year if this happens. This is my optimistic approach ya.

My pessimistic approach is this:

Cardinals 84

Cubs 83

Brewers 77

At the rate the Brewers have been going, they could easily fall flat. They've had plenty of "oh this could turn us around", and every time someones said that, Sheets, the Yost-Hardy fight, etc, nothing has helped turn them around. Look for them to easily claim 1st next year when they put it all together completely.
