I am so clueless as to what she was trying to say, I am speechless. What exactly was the point she was trying to cross when she answered that question? I personally like how she referred to us as U.S. Americans (we are United States Americans? I didn't know we referred to us as so). It is more of a grammar goof than anything, but whatever. And why would they ask just a stupid question to begin with?

It is a pretty stupid question, I'm not sure I believe that 20% of the nation can't find the United States on a map.

Aside from that, going down the Billy Madison road, nothing she said there could be considered a rational thought and anyone who watches that is now dumber.

I award her no points...

I do give AC Slater credit for not bursting out laughing...

- It's a pretty dumb question, I don't know how I would be able to respond to it in any kind of polite/diplomatic/PC way.

- She's on the spot, trying to make up some kind of reasonable answer to a dumb question and got turned around and didn't realize that the question was about US residents.

- I don't believe the stat to begin with.

- She's really cute, so I'll defend her to death.

My favorite excerpt:

"...and I believe that our education, like, such as in South Africa and, uh, the Eye-Rack, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should , uh, our education over here(!), in the U.S., should help the U.S., should help South Africa, and should help the Eye-Rack, and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future -- for our children." [smiles]

--- Lauren Caitlen Upton

I may be changing my sig in the not-too-distant future. And for the love of the Fertile Crescent people - it's pronounced 'Ee-rahck'! Just because Dubya says it this way doesn't make it right - he said 'Nook-u-lar', too! (not a political comment...)

To be fair, my 'excerpt' is almost the whole thing, but I just can't go without being able to read that again, and again, and again. Dumb question -- atrociously incoherent & brainless answer. I know she's on the spot, but I'd love to see what she'd have written/spoken given a minute or two to prepare. That still would have been funny. I love how she includes the obligatory nods to education, our children, and how we need to build a better future for them. In response to a question about US citizens & map usage. Classic.

And Mario looked like he could barely keep himself together by the end. Kudos to him, I'd have been rolling.

well, at least this explains the ESPN Page 2 blurb about this today. I had no idea what they were talking about. Thanks for posting that. I needed a good laugh.

I'll cut her some slack for being really nervous, but even still.......good lord.

Breaking news: Ms. America contestant a moron! Film at 6.

Your sarcasm is kind of a generalization. A lot of Miss America winners are pretty bright.

Now, if you had said "Beauty Pageant contestant a moron" it might have worked better. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest the Harvard Law Student was the exception. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

But yeah I was just being a sarcastic jerk. It's an easy target. Some of them could be making significant contributions to quantum physics for all I know. A large percentage might be qualified for Wal-Mart Door Greeter even.
