Mark A. is jamming daggers in his Ned Yost voodoo doll. Wait that's what i'm doing, sorry.

I'd prefer you do that to his legs to prevent him from actually going to and managing the game. Thanks.

I don't like Estrada, but I don't see how anybody else we have right now would be a better alternative. How was that trade bad? Davis was asking for a 3 year contract or threatening to go to arbitration. Ther is no way we would want him for the next 3 years. He looked last year very much like Vargas has this year so that is a wash. Aquino didn't turn out, but Krynzel was going nowhere with us so we at least gained onother arm. So the trade boils down to Eveland vs Estrada. Eveland didn't exactly make the most of his chances last year and I doubt wold have been much better this year. As for the Linebrink trade, we will have to wait and see how good Inman really is. Linebrink has been hit and miss so far, but if he turns it up for the rest of the year the trade will look good. Every team that has gotten rid of Melvin has gotten worse after his departure.

First, the Davis trade:

1. Estrada's absolutely putrid abilities behind the place remind me of Dave Nilsson... with mediocre-to-sub-par offense. There's a reason why Estrada's now on his 4th team in what, 5 years. I know a lot of people were saying that was a red flag when the trade happened; those people (I, alas, wasn't one of them - I was expecting more) have been essentially vindicated. Which, unfortunately, has left the Brewers with a catcher who's closing in on AARP eligibility as a better option than Estrada. Sadly, that option cannot play everyday anymore.

2. Vargas' past numbers pretty much predicted this season. He was pedestrian at best and regressing in his peripherals. And he enters his final year of arby after this season; if the Brewers wanted a one year stopgap, I guess they got that.

3. Aquino was a "nugget" type. His numbers really weren't that great to begin with. Sure, he may throw somewhat hard but... his track record wasn't that great.

So really... the ESPN broadcasters that chalked the trade up in the Arizona column from day one were correct.

And back to the Linebrink trade:

1. The biggest issue with the Linebrink trade is not the fact the Brewers gave up Inman to try and improve the 'pen, but the fact that they got a pitcher who was described by scouts as "burned-out" and with peripherals that were regressing quickly from when he was a top setup man 2 or 3 years ago.

2. Inman may or may not ever be a good MLB pitcher; that's not the point. The point is that the Brewers allowed the Padres to replace Linebrink in the pen immediately (via Thatcher) PLUS giving them two prospects. Calling up Thatcher - as many of us said from day one - would have been the smarter choice.

When Melvin was let go from Texas, for example, the team was already on the downward slide. So of course they got worsehttp://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif

So yes - I say they cut Melvin loose after this season. Melvin made his bed this season; he now has to lie in it.

Yes and the reasons are because both organizations had highly touted rookie C's coming up so they didn't need Estrada (don't know what happened in PHI but he was never a starter anyway). His abilities behind the plate aren't nearly as bad as his haters seem to think they are. Vargas = Davis, Estrada > rest of the scrubs, there is no way we lost that deal.

Looks like different faces in the FO over the years, different short and long term plans possibly, but the same old results regarding W-L records.

The Brewers have a bunch of young, high ceiling players on their team right now. You couldn't begin to say that even 3 years ago. If it's the same old same old in a couple of years, I'll be right there with you but these kids haven't even begun to get a chance to develop. If that's not good enough for you, you are going to need a new team or a new sport because the Brewers are always going to need to rely primarily on developing their own talent. They stunk for so long because they developed almost NO talent for a decade.

As for Melvin being on the hot seat for not improving the team, what the heck was he supposed to do? Like there was all this talent being dangled for the taking. He needed a reliever and he got one of the biggest names available. Heck, I wish he hadn't of even done that.

But if you REALLY want to see scary, take a look at Mike Rivera (the guy Estrada legitimately replaced)'s season in Nashville, and realize that he has worse career defensive numbers than Estrada as well....

And Davis has actually put up worse numbers than Vargas in almost everything except ERA somehow.

Once again I agree completely. And I'm beginning to hope they don't try too hard to shake anything up. I guess I'm neutral right now on Yost. If there's an obvious upgrade available this offseason, fine. But if we just bring in another "up and coming manager", then I say stick with Yost. And Melvin has done everything possible to turn this team around - a job many experts didn't think was even possible a few years ago (remember all the contraction talk?). If we fail to make a serious run at the division next year (assuming no huge outbreak of injuries for instance), then it may be time for major change. But I'm leaning toward "ride what we've built thus far".

Well, comparing Estrada to Rivera is like comparing bad to worse. If DM's goal was to get the Brewers a good starting catcher, Estrada was obviously not the answer.

And I still maintain that Vargas should not be back next year.
