The loss of sheets

JohnA17

Anyone else think the loss of Sheets has had an effect way beyond the every 5 day thing? The pitching has been a disaster and I wonder if removing the one power pitcher we had from the rotiation has made our pitching worse Now we have nothing but soft tossers out there and it is easy for teams to get into
a groove against us.. I am guessing this has been brought up here before but man our pitching has STUNK almost from the day Ben went down.

Maybe it affected them mentally, but I think that is a poor excuse. It appears to be poor preparation (Maddox) and poor decision making on the pitchers (like Dave Bush pitching to Molina, not once, but twice with two out and the pitcher on deck only to get taken yard both times). This team can't catch a break and it starts with the pitching. I don't think fatigue is any issue, they just aren't pitching well. I'd hate to say that it's Estrada's game calling, because I don't think the results have been any different with Miller behind the dish. Couple that with less than average defense leading to more unearned runs and you have a bunch of losses.

The effect it has had is that the bullpen has had to absorb more innings. That's a very real thing, it has nothing to do with the soft-tossers, as far as I can tell. That was pretty much the major concern I had when he got hurt, was that it would have a very bad cascading effect down the staff. There isn't that guy who is going to pretty much give 7 innings, or at the least 6, every start.

the bigger loss was to our #2 pitcher. Losing Sheets was sort of expected. Our 3-5 pitchers have pitched as expected (hence why most of anticipated Vargas being replaced in the rotation in August). The only really unexpected loss was Cappy pitching worse than Vargas.

Really, 22-26 starts from Sheets was expected, and they were good starts.
