I spoke with Brae when he was here in Charleston, and I think they messed with his mechanics quite a bit while here. He pitched pretty well his last few outings here, so I think it was a matter of finding his mechanics that he was comfortable with, and not so much the change of scenery.

Final: Arizona Brewers 6, Arizona Cubs 5

Arizona Box Score:

DHonks refers above to 18-year-old LHP Kristian Bueno, who went five scoreless in his best outing of the season, by far; the A-Crew led 5-0 after five, but saw the Cubs tie the game in the top of the 9th against closer Patrick Lawler, who got the win when Carlos Hereaud hit a one-out walkoff home run in the bottom of the 9th, his 2nd HR of the season; yeah for catcher Brett Whiteside, gunning down three of four trying to steal second base...

Arizona Game Log:

Bueno pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 1st with two K's; none of the three Brewer runs in the 5th was driven in with a base hit -- two sac flies and a balk...

Final: Great Falls (White Sox) 6, Helena 3

MiLB.com:

Marrero, Estill pace White Sox

Christian Marrero and Lyndon Estill each drove in two runs as Great Falls beat visiting Helena, 6-3, on Saturday.

Marrero stroked an RBI single in the first inning and delivered a run-scoring double in the fifth. Estill ripped an RBI double in the third and belted a solo homer, his seventh, in the fifth.

Jim Gallagher and Andrew Mead had two hits apiece for the White Sox (17-7), who opened a 4 1/2-game lead over the second-place Brewers (13-12) in the Pioneer League's North Division.

Great Falls' Anthony Carter (4-3) yielded two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one over five innings for his first win in seven starts since July 16. Henry Mabee walked one and fanned two in two scoreless frames for his sixth save.

Helena starter Jose Garcia (7-3) surrendered six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits while striking out four in five innings.

Curt Rindal, Eric Farris and Steffan Wilson drove in the runs for the Brewers. -- Steve Conley/MLB.com

Helena Box Score:

R.J. Seidel looked strong with three scoreless innings of relief; Jose Garcia's ERA now stands at 5.53 -- other than that and his nine HR's allowed in 68.1 IP, his peripheral numbers (K/BB, ground balls, etc.) are still OK to good; wind was blowing straight out to center at 30 MPH for a combined ten extra-base hits in the game; four of the top five in the Brewer lineup with multiple-hit games, but it didn't translate into a lot of production; Caleb Gindl 0-for-4 in the cleanup spot, now at .235 in his last ten games...

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

CRAWDADS SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN TO BEAT POWER

Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings of Saturday night's game at L.P. Frans Stadium and they took the second game of the series with a 7-5 victory over the West Virginia Power.

Kent Sakamoto's two-out base hit scored Albert LaBoy in the bottom of the first inning. In the second, Alex Pressley and Jim Negrych ripped back-to-back two-out RBI singles to increase the Hickory lead. The Power scored twice in the top of the third. Matt LaPorta's sacrifice fly plated Andy Bouchie and Charlie Fermaint scored on Taylor Green's two-out single.

The Crawdads scored four times in the third inning to pull away. Laboy scored the first run on a wild pitch, Danilo Sanchez singled in Jonel Pacheco before Eddie Prasch's double scored Sakamoto and Mike Ambrose's sacrifice fly plated Sanchez to complete the inning. Bouchie hit a solo home run in the seventh, his seventh of the season, and Steve Chapman pulled the Power within two in the eighth inning when he smashed a two-run homer, his 23rd of the season.

Rafael De Los Santos (2-2) allowed a pair of runs on one hit through five innings to get the win, Chris Castorri (6) earned the save and Chris Toneguzzi (6-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on twelve hits over five innings.

The Power fell to 76-52 overall and 28-32 in the second half, while the Crawdads improved 63-65 overall and 36-25 in the second half. Chapman was the only Power player with a multi-hit game. West Virginia has hit nine home runs in their last three games.

The Power will finish the three game series against Hickory Sunday night. The Power will start left hander Mike Ramlow (4-5, 6.30) and the Crawdads will start right hander Jared Hughes (7-9, 4.49). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM (5:00 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

The back end of this rotation is in no shape to have postseason success right now, for that matter, not a lot of momentum in any form on the squad other than the recent home run binge...

Crawdads pull plug on Power

By GARY OLINGER

HICKORY RECORD SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

HICKORY - If the Hickory Crawdads and West Virginia Power have been staging a playoff preview the Crawdads look like they will go to the South Atlantic League championship series.

Hickory, the Northern Division second-half leader, defeated West Virginia 7-5 Saturday for its second victory in two nights against the Northern Division first-half champions.

Saturday's win maintained a 4 1-2-game lead for the Crawdads, who have eight to play.

"It's meaningful because we're trying to get into the playoffs -- not so much that we beat West Virginia -- because they've got a good team over there," Hickory manager Gary Green said. "They've already earned the right to be in the playoffs."

The Power had defeated Hickory eight times in 10 games this season before Friday night, when the Crawdads won 12-11 on Danilo Sanchez' two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

"That's the team we want to beat in the playoffs and the team we want to beat now," said the Crawdads' Albert Laboy, who went 4-for-4 and scored twice Saturday.

"(Friday's) walk-off home run gave us a lot of momentum."

The Crawdads surged into a 7-2 lead in the first three innings Saturday.

"We really came out swinging it early in the game," Laboy said.

The Crawdads scored three runs in the first two innings on two-out singles by Kent Sakamoto, Alex Presley and Jim Negrych.

Hickory added four third-inning runs, one of which was driven in by Eddie Prasch's double, the Crawdads' only extra-base hit on a night when they had 13 singles.

Jose Rafael De Los Santos, making his third start for the Crawdads, went five innings to get the win. He gave up only one hit but walked the first three batters in the third inning before the Power scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt LaPorta and a single by Taylor Green.

West Virginia's Andy Bouchie, the first batter faced by Dustin Molleken, led off the seventh inning with his second home run in two nights. Steve Chapman hit a long, two-run homer off Molleken in the eighth.

NOTES: West Virginia had 20 hits Friday and five Saturday; Hickory batters were hit by pitches four times, including Sakamoto twice; If the Crawdads win the second-half title they will host the Power on Sept. 5 in the first game of a best-of-three series; The second and, if necessary, the third game, will be Sept 7 and 8 at Charleston, W.Va.

Sanchez, Hammerheads edge Manatees

Gaby Sanchez doubled home the decisive run in the ninth inning as Jupiter edged Brevard County, 5-4, on Saturday at Space Coast Stadium.

The Hammerheads (26-33) had just taken a 4-3 lead in the ninth when Sanchez came to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs. The 23-year-old first baseman ripped a line drive to left field, scoring Emilio Ontiveros to cap a two-hit, two-RBI night.

John Purdom singled twice and also drove in two runs for Jupiter.

Reliever Jesus Silva (6-4) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two in two scoreless frames for the win. Todd Doolittle gave up a leadoff home run to Nestor Corredor in the ninth before retiring the next three hitters for his 25th save.

Sounds Split Twinbill With RedHawks

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds split a doubleheader with the Oklahoma RedHawks thanks to a Drew Anderson game-ending RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap in front of a crowd of 7,625 on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

With a victory in the second game of the twinbill, Nashville's magic number was reduced to one to clinch its third consecutive division title. The Sounds (82-53) are now 11-6 against Oklahoma on the season.

Callix Crabbe led off the second game with a triple to deep center and came in to score on a Tony Gwynn groundout to second to give the Sounds an early 1-0 lead.

Nashville scored again in the bottom of the second inning after Laynce Nix hit a one-out rope into center field for a double. Jose Macias (2-for-3) plated him two batters later with another double to center to bring the score to 2-0.

Oklahoma's bats came to life in the top of the sixth inning when Drew Meyer led off with a bunt single and moved to second on pitcher Steve Bray's throwing error. Bray walked Freddy Guzman before Mitch Stetter came in for one batter, striking out Tug Hulett. Greg Aquino entered the game and allowed an RBI single to Victor Diaz that plated Meyer and moved Guzman to third before Nate Gold's sacrifice fly scored Guzman and tied the game at two runs apiece.

Nashville utilized the late-inning heroics of Anderson to push past the RedHawks in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chris Barnwell led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before being moved to second on Crabbe's sacrifice bunt. Anderson came through two batters later by delivering the game-winning hit, a ground-rule double to center off Oklahoma reliever A.J. Murray (3-3) that scored Barnwell and gave the Sounds their 12th last at-bat victory on the season.

AUDIO: Anderson Game-Ending Double

Aquino (3-2) backed into the victory for Nashville as the beneficiary of the late heroics after allowing a pair of inherited runners to score in his 1 2/3 innings. Bray threw five innings in his spot start, allowing two runs and striking out a season-high five batters.

The Sounds dropped the first game of the doubleheader by a final score of 6-0 in seven innings. Nashville hitters were held to only two hits by Oklahoma starter Armando Galarraga (2-1), who earned the win by throwing the complete seven innings, walking three and striking out four.

Oklahoma led off the scoring in the top of the third when Guzman hit a one-out triple to deep center field. He scored one batter later on a Hulett single to center to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The RedHawks furthered their lead in the top half of the next frame. Kevin Mahar and David Matranga began the rally with back-to-back hits, putting men at second and third before Chris Stewart's sacrifice fly plated Mahar. Guzman then drew a walk before Hulett hit a three-run homer and give Oklahoma a 5-0 lead.

Nashville starter Adam Pettyjohn (11-4) took the loss in game one after giving up five runs in five innings. Reliever Dennis Sarfate had an impressive outing, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out all six outs recorded during his appearance.

The Sounds will conclude their 2007 regular-season series against Oklahoma on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Mark DiFelice (4-1, 3.13) is scheduled to take the hill for Nashville and will oppose Oklahoma right-hander Edinson Volquez (6-1, 1.60).

Sounds split, try to clinch title again today

By JEFF LOCKRIDGE

Tennessean Staff Writer

The Nashville Sounds took the back half of a doubleheader with the Oklahoma RedHawks 3-2 on Saturday at Greer Stadium, but dropped the opener 6-0 and were unable to lock down a playoff berth in their first opportunity to do so.

Nashville, seeking its 13th postseason in franchise history, can clinch the PCL American North Division title today for the third consecutive season with a win over Oklahoma at 6 p.m. or an Iowa loss to New Orleans at 2.

Nashville leads second-place Iowa by eight games with nine remaining.

The Sounds' magic number is one to clinch the title because they own the tiebreaker over Iowa by winning the season series 9-6.

"As soon as we lost the first game and Iowa had won, we knew we couldn't clinch," Sounds right fielder Drew Anderson said. "But it was good to get the magic number to one."

Anderson's ground-rule double off A.J. Murray (3-3) in the seventh inning scored Chris Barnwell to end the second game and brought the remnants of 7,625 in attendance to their feet.

Greg Aquino (3-2) notched the win after he was unable to get the save for Sounds starter Steve Bray. Oklahoma tied it 2-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Oklahoma's victory in the opener, coupled with Iowa's 2-1 win over New Orleans, postponed the champagne shower.

Armando Galarraga (2-1) pitched the seven-inning shutout and limited the Sounds to two hits.

Sounds left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (11-4) surrendered five earned runs for the third time in his last four starts to take the loss.
