Brave DFA Wickman; Signs With DBacks

Wickman would be a nice option as closer if Cordero went down, but would he a)accept not closing for us even though we're the hometown team and b)worth what we trade for him? I'm still an admitted Linebrink trade naysayer, and giving up anything of consequence for a guy that would perhaps give us 20 IP would be terrible. Maybe the Braves want to try and resurrect Sarfate's career?

Would Wickman prefer to not close for the BRewers or not close from his couch? I think his closer days are over.

That's a little unfair. There are a number of teams which would like to have Wickman close for them, this year and next. He'll also get picked up by someone, without question. I hope it is us, and I hope for little cost.

Wickman outpitched Cordero in 2005 and 2006, and Cordero is a fine closer. This move absolutly shocks me. The Brewers should aquire him, if for no other reason than to keep him from the Cubs.

Yep

Borowski is closing in Cleveland with an ERA over five,Wickman should be able to help a number of contending teams as a setup man at the very least.

Melvin apparently has no interest due to Wickmans apparent attitude problems. If we can get Wickman cheap and pass it would be a huge mistake. I think that Wickman would be fine if he was at home pitching for the Brewers. The way the season is slipping away we can use all the help we can get. Offer Zack Jackson for Wickman and get it done.

This was in theJS online this morning

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he had no interest in Bob Wickman, who was designated for assignment by Atlanta. Wickman set what was a club record with 37 saves for the Brewers in 1999 but Melvin and his staff apparently heard some things they didn't like about his conduct in Atlanta.

Even if Melvin did want him I don't think Zack Jackson would be a wise move. He's young, left handed and cheap for the next three years which is a bit much to give up for a months worth of old, average and expensive.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Whoops.

On the trade front: The Atlanta Braves made the surprise announcement Friday that they had severed ties with closer Bob Wickman, who was having issues on the mound and in the clubhouse. Atlanta designated Wickman for assignment and has 10 days to trade or release him.

Wickman pitched for the Brewers from 1996-2000 and set a franchise record with 37 saves in 1999. But the '07 Brewers are not interested in a return engagement, general manager Doug Melvin said.

"There's just nothing out there that excites you at this point," Melvin said of the players currently available. "If you have an injury, you go out and get somebody. We said we would weigh what is available against what we have in Triple-A."

Players must be on a team's 40-*@% roster by Aug. 31 to be eligible for postseason play. Yost, as usual, referred personnel questions to the general manager, but did say that he is happy with his team as it is currently constructed.

"It's one thing if you have guys that aren't producing, but we're starting to play pretty good right now," Yost said. "We're not looking to make wholesale changes. We've got a plan and we're looking to stick with our plan. Our plan has been pretty good to this point."

No interest in Wickman

As i've said in the rumors thread, there have been plenty of players available. clearly, Wickman has been available for some time. it's just melvin has no interest in him. I have to believe there are a lot of other players available that melvin also has no interest in.

Managers all hate guys who complain a lot. but for the sake of winning, they trade for them, and play them - ala gary Sheffield. it comes down to do we want a happy club house? or do we want to do everything possible to win? it looks to me like having a happy clubhouse takes priority over winning.

I can't believe melvin doesn't like Wickman just because of his crybaby attitude. I'd rather see Wickman pitching with his bad whinning, attitude than seeing the happy go lucky Capuano pitch on the mound. And yes, I recall when Wickman signed with the braves, he turned down the chance to pitch for several other teams offering more money because he said he only wanted to pitch for a team that planned to use him strickly as a closer. is Wickman still going to make those type of demands and watch from his couch? or wil he be willing to bend?

and yost says we have a plan? and he wants to stick with that plan? I guess that plan doesn't inlcude winning this year? I hate to say it, but sometimes you have to throw out the long term plan and use a short term plan. that time is now.

and besides, Wickman leaving after the season to free agency will give the brewers two more first round compensation picks in next year's draft to use towards that long term plan of ned's. I would think the brewers would love to pick up a potential free agent just for the draft picks alone.

I agree that sometimes you have to recognize when the window is open, but the time is now for what exactly? What is the goal? The NL Central amounts to nothing more than a battle to determine the tallest midget...Does anyone believe that the Brewers, Cubs, or Cardinals have what it takes to advance through the playoffs to the WS? I sure don't. I am all for trying to go to the playoffs this year, and while acquiring Wickman probably wouldn't constitute abandoning the plan, I don't see the time as now. Shore up the rotation, figure out a way to improve the defense (another year of experience could be a good start for both), and the time may be next year.
