Jenkins an '08 Brewer - yea or nay?

MNBrew
That said, if he feels compelled to come back to the Brewers for around $2M, then I could see him back

Give me a break, there is no way Jenkins is playing for $2M next year. My guess is he makes at least $6M for someone, 4th OF's make $2M a year and while he is more or less a platoon guy now he's a decent fielder and above average hitter vs righties.

Basically, what you seem to be saying RoCo (since you seem to agree with me and others that Gross could roughly match Jenkins offensive production), is that you'd be willing to spend $9M to have a better backup outfielder?

I think you took my words slightly out of context. I said at best, Gross would no more than equal Jenkins' offensive production. That doesn't mean I think it's likely, only that in my opinion, it's the best case scenario. I also think it's relevant to factor in that Jenkins is a superior defender to Gross.

McCalvy's mailbag on the Brewers' official site said something today about Jenkins' patented 2nd half hot streak, or hot 2nd half, or something. Well, we need more than a hot couple weeks or hot month out of Jenkins for it to seem like he truly deserves the $9M he'd make next year. It's been since the 2nd half of '05 -- two full years -- since he's had a seriously good, long hot stretch.

In other words, it's been 4 medium and downright bad half-seasons since Jenkins' last really good half-season.

Not sure where that puts things ultimately, but it is a point worth noting.

Perhaps, but if so, not by much, and certainly not worth spending $5-9 mil. more than simply giving Gross his shot. I think you'd find many (at least some) that'd argue that at this point, Gross is the superior defender (stronger arm, better speed). I originally stuck up for Geoff & voted "Yea" (I'm a big #5 homer), but the cost-to-production argument really has won me over on Gross. Plus Gross has patience and seemingly a better eye at the dish.

That's a HUGE NO!!!! Gross fills in for him, plus Braun could be moving to the OF, at some point. $9 million will come in handy elsewhere, this would be a catatrophic re-signing. Jenkins money goes to Sheets, Cordero or for arby raises.

Hard to believe there are so many yeas, everyone is entitled to their own opinions but fellas, PLEEZE!!!

GO BREW

My sentiments also. The money could be better spent.

I think Jenkins best and highest use at this point in his career is as a platoon corner outfielder. I'm not sure if that's what you mean by being a 4th outfielder, but I have a feeling we're pretty close to agreeing on what his best role is. I'm not sure what the market price for that type of player will be. All it takes is for one other team to decide Jenkins is worth $6m to them. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if he could get $4-5 million on the open market next year.

As for yea or nay as an '08 Brewer, I say nay if it is for $9m. I would probably be okay if he could be signed for about half that amount.

We have far better ways to spend 9 million such as extending Sheets and possibly resigning Cordero. Gross can more than adequately replace Jenkins and Dillon can replace Mench and we save more than 10 million. Sounds like a no brainer to me. If Jenkins wasnt a career Brewer would we even be having this conversation?

A fourth OF is a guy like Gross for the Brewers or like a Tony Gwynn. An established player of that calibre who you only use to fill in for days off etc goes for around $2M a year.

Jenkins is a platoon OF who could still play full time if someone is injured etc. He is going to make a good $6M almost for sure, probably with a short term contract. Something like 2 years $12M or 3 years $16M.

A platoon corner outfielder, yes. An every day starting outfielder? Hmmmm.... maybe. I guess if a player like Pat Burell can find $13M on the market, I will admit Jenkins might be able to get close to what his option is worth.

I think Jenkins would actually get a little more than $6 mil on the open market this offseason; his numbers for this season will look pretty good when teams are looking through the free agent list this winter. I just don't think the Brewers will pick up his option because they have Gross at such a cheaper rate; I think Melvin had Gabe included in the Overbay deal just for this reason. I really like Jenks too, but you can't spend 8.5 mil for sentimental reasons.

Jenks has given this organization 13 years now. This may very well be the last. He has played hard for us through some very lean years. I hope and expect the fans who go to the games this final week will show him the appreciation he is due from all of us.

I now think I have to go with Yay. I wouldn't mind Gross starting and $9m looks like quite a bit, but I think it would really effect our depth. With Gross as a backup we have a pretty good backup, but if he gets promoted to starter then we go down to TGJ. Not a bad backup, but a much bigger drop off for Gross to Gwynn than Jenkins to Gross.

I blame Wang.

But logan, why assume that if Gross were to start, that we couldn't find a backup that'd be much better than Gwynn? Doug Melvin, according to Doug Melvin, is not hair conditioner. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif

Jenkins for 9m or make a run to resign Coco?

I'd say, gotta go for Coco.... or another 2-3 arms in the bullpen...

Dont forget that CoCo is more than likley going to get 3-4 years on a contract and even though we gain $9m this offseason($8m actually with the buyout at $1m) we are going to need alot of money after the 2008 season for Fielder, Hart and the other arbitration players.
