This is being discussed over at badgermaniac, so some of you may have already seen it, and I don't even know if I can post this here, but I'm gonna go for it. What follows is one of those "101 question survey" type of things that are found on myspace and facebook that anyone under the age of 30 is more than familiar with. Also, check out the reader comments that follow. For what it's worth, the language of the article/survey is definitely not work friendly....but do it anyways. This can't be real, can it?

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I know what your saying, and I don't necessarily disagree but the truth is, unfortunately, a growing number of young males period are acting the same way. And no I'm not the PC police, it's just the truth.

 

I used to work for Roundys and each store I went into, whether it be a Milwaukee area Pick N Save, or a Copps in Madison, or a Rainbow up north, they all employed a good deal of 17-24 year old males. Many (so many) tried posing as just such a "thug" regardless of race.

 

There was a kid at a local area Pick N Save bragging about all the jewelry he bought his girlfriend with the money he made selling drugs while bagging groceries. I couldn't believe my ears. I pulled him aside, introduced myself and "explained" to him how inappropriate his conversation was. He was a 17 year old kid, white, who could really talk the talk, if you know what I mean. Well about a month later I had a meeting in the same location. While we were in the meeting it turns out this kid tried ripping off a customer for $50 - he reached into her purse while bagging her groceries. So the store director brings this kid into the office and he was term'ed on the spot. Cops were called, whole 9 yeards. This "thug" broke into tears so quick I nearly laughed. In an instant he dropped the whole act. Thats one of my favorite memories of that job.

But to your original point, I agree there are too many young guys out there acting like this. I get a call one day asking my to drop by and help out with a situation at one of the stores. I get there and find out we have a new hire brandishing a knife at customers. I also caught the guy on the digital video pulling the knife on an employee in the back room. When I approached him and removed him from the sales floor he went into a full on "thug" role. He told me he was a real "gangster" who wasn't going to be told what to do...at work...by his ranking co-workers....or by his boss... or by me - his bosses boss. He told me that if the customers didn't want him to pull a knife they shouldn't have looked at him "like that". Ugh!
