The Charleston Daily Mail reported that in order to get the West Virginia squad's roster of 27 down to the official South Atlantic League limit of 25, the Power placed outfielder Darren Ford and pitcher J.T. King on the 7-day disabled list. Injury news not available at this time.

You'll notice that when you click on the various team pages from the sidebar off of our home page, you'll see the roster broken down by active and non-active. When the cause of an injury is known, it will be listed.

Manatees pitcher recovers after foul-ball injury

BY JIM CAWLEY

FLORIDA TODAY

A major scare turned into a feeling of relief after Brevard County Manatees pitcher David Welch was struck in the head with a foul ball during Saturday's Florida State League game against the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field.

Welch, who was standing in the dugout, was struck in the forehead with a hard liner off the bat of a teammate in the second inning. Athletic trainers from both teams rushed to assist Welch, who was knocked unconscious.

"It hit him so hard it knocked him completely out and he fell back in the dugout," said Manatees director of media relations Scott Pinner, who was doing radio play-by-play for the game. "The ball hit him so hard that after it hit him, the ball went straight up into the stands."

Manatees GM Buck Rogers also witnessed the incident.

"The ball lasered into the dugout," Rogers said. "It was lights out for a little while."

According to Pinner, Welch faded in and out of consciousness at first. He then regained consciousness, was given an IV and taken to the hospital for a CAT scan. Pinner said Welch was in good spirits at the hospital and even jokingly asked if he could have a radio so he could listen to the rest of the game.

The 23-year-old left-hander from Sydney, Australia, was released from the hospital Saturday night and was at Space Coast Stadium before Sunday's game against St. Lucie, which was rained out. Welch, who has a laceration on his forehead, was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Friday.

Welch has appeared in three games for Brevard County this season, posting a 3.00 ERA. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder has three strikeouts and has not walked a batter.

While not officially assigned to Nashville (or Huntsville) yet, Baseball America reports the following:

Milwaukee Brewers Signed: OF Ruben Mateo

Once one of the game?s most promising young players, Mateo never recovered his luster after a fractured leg he suffered as a rookie for the Rangers in 2000. The Reds, Pirates and Royals all gambled on him, but were not rewarded. Mateo played in Korea in 2005 and did not play professionally in 2006 after being released by the Nationals during spring training. He?s still just 29 years of age.

Huntsville Roster Moves

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that Stars? outfielder Ulyses Davenport has been placed on the disabled with a right calf injury and that first baseman Mike Carlin has been activated from the disabled list.

Davenport is batting .148 (4-for-27) with one run batted in over the first nine games of the season, including five starts in left field. Three of his four hits have been doubles.

Carlin started the season in Arizona at the Brewers training facility in Maryvale recovering from a spring training injury. He was selected by Milwaukee from the Pirates in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft in December after spending the first four years of his career in the Pittsburgh organization. He has hit 38 home runs and knocked in 186 runs in his career and will be playing at the double-A level for the first time.

Today's Nashville Media Notes:

GULIN ACTIVATED FROM D.L.: Left-hander Lindsay Gulin has been activated from the disabled list to fill the open roster spot created when Chris Spurling?s contract was purchased by Milwaukee following last night?s game. Gulin has spent the entire 2007 season on the Sounds? D.L. and will make his first Pacific Coast League appearance since 2003. The southpaw was an All-Star in the independent American Association last season and spent the 2004 & ?05 campaigns playing in Japan. In his last PCL stint, Gulin went 10-10 with a 4.85 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) for Las Vegas (AAA-Dodgers) in 2003 and threw a nine-inning no hitter on June 13.

AQUINO TO JOIN SOUNDS: Right-handed reliever Greg Aquino will join the Sounds? bullpen sometime in the next three days after being optioned to Nashville by Milwaukee last night. The 29-year-old hurler posted a 5.87 ERA (5 ER / 7.2 IP) in eight relief appearances for the Brew Crew this season but had surrendered all five of his runs in his most recent two appearances. Upon Aquino?s arrival, the Sounds will have to make a move to add him to the active roster, which currently stands at the 24-man maximum.

At Brevard County, LHP David Welch has been activated from the 7-day DL, and is thankfully OK after taking that foul ball on the ol' noggin.

RHP Kevin Roberts has been placed on the Manatee DL with an undisclosed injury to make room for Welch.

Stars Make Another Roster Move

MONTGOMERY, AL ? The Huntsville Stars have placed third baseman Adam Heether on the disabled list with an oblique muscle strain and activated outfielder Ulyses Davenport from the disabled list. Davenport will be in uniform for the Stars game Tuesday morning against the Biscuits.

Heether had his first two-hit game of the season last night and is batting .132 with three runs batted in. He had been mired in a one-for-28 slump prior to going two-for-three with a sacrifice bunt and run-scoring single in Monday?s 10-3 win over the Biscuits, during which he sustained the injury.

Davenport was placed on the disabled list a week ago with a right calf strain. He had collected four hits, three doubles, in 27 at-bats and knocked in one run in nine games before suffering his injury.

Not an official disabled list transaction, at least not yet, but Adam McCalvy of MLB.com passes on the following:

Banged up: Ned Yost's son, Ned Yost IV, will miss about a week at Class A Brevard County because of a strange injury that conjured memories of Brewers reliever Matt Wise's run-in with salad tongs last summer. He was enjoying a team off-day Sunday at the beach, and suffered a shoulder injury when a wave crashed into him and sent him tumbling into someone else.

The younger Yost, who is batting .348 as the Manatees' designated hitter and backup first baseman, meekly called his dad to explain.

"You know how a manager is when a guy gets hurt on the beach," Yost the elder said. "It doesn't matter if it's your son or not."

Mark McCarter of the Huntsville Times tells us that Stars reliever Grant Balfour was promoted to the Triple-A Nashville club, with RHP Bo Hall coming off the Stars' disabled list.

Nashville will have to make a corresponding move today, no word on that yet.

Yet another West Virginia disabled list exchange, as LHP Jose Romero returns (he saw action Saturday night), and RHP D.J. Lidyard, who has struggled in the early going, is placed on the D.L. with an undisclosed injury.

Having appeared in action in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday, Brevard County infielder Ryan Barba is off the disabled list.

We'll find out for you by later today the corresponding move at high-A.

Back on March 28th, we had posted the following:

The Brewers have signed RHP Devin Rogers as a minor league free agent.

Drafted in the 8th round out of Nicholls State University (Louisiana) in 1999 by the Cleveland Indians -- actually the same year and round as Chris Capuano, Justin Lehr, and former Brewer David Pember -- Rogers hasn't pitched professionally since 2001, amazing.

Having signed for $76,000, Rogers struck out 83 in 89.2 innings for Columbus in 2000. Then -- right shoulder surgery Sept 2000, UCL sprain in right elbow July 2001, Tommy John surgery May 2002. Yikes.

The Brewers signed him during an open workout this winter, apparently with some impressive radar readings. We believe he's now 28 years old.

We've learned that Rogers was nursing an injury this spring, but has recently been both activated from the D.L. and subsequently released, so he did not appear in an official game for the Brewers.
