Andy Rooney on baseball

I saw this on FireJoeMorgan.com earlier. This thing is too unprofessional to be called an article, and too incoherent to be labeled as a rant. Something tells me that he was picked last for every playground game (for many reasons other than throwing like a girl) and this is his pathetic and warped idea of revenge.

I also think baseball needs some rules changes, too. For example, the player who starts the game as pitcher should have to play all nine innings without a substitution. A pitcher hardly ever plays more than a few innings and then the manager replaces him with someone who isn't as good.

This statement is the dumbest thing I have ever read.

The last time I head Andy Rooney, he was complaining about people not wearing ties. It was a 10 minute rant about men that don't wear ties.

Then before that he was complaining about his laptop and wanting to go back to the days of a typewriter because he didn't have to plug it in.

I love Rooney because I take him as a comedian doing a parody of all the grumpy old guys I've known who constantly complain. I'm pretty sure it's not an act with Rooney, but when you pretend it is, he's funny, just like political commentators - just pretend it's all an act like Colbert and it becomes funny instead of irritating.

All you hippies around here on the inter-whatzis, being wisenheimers with no ties and into "free love".. Why back in my day we woulda sent the likes a you out into the forest with nuthin but a compass, a piece of broken glass, an axe and a People magazine from 1979.. And if the Suzanne Somers articles didn't make ya wanna kill yerself, you could use the dern thing to light a campfire with your broken piece a glass! But then, you wouldn't know that, would ya hippy! Not so groovy now, is it!

Seriously, there was a time when Rooney kinda, sorta made sense, in a satirical kinda way..Waaaay back when.. I agree, I think what used to pass for somewhat humorous observations on things, now comes off as an old man trying to shoehorn himself into a time that passed him by.

Of course it's an act--it's not necessarily a parody, I don't think, but Rooney definitely plays it up.

Exactly. I think the article was funny, as are his shorts on 60 minutes. Isn't it just fun sometimes to rant about things with illogical arguments and and poor understanding of the thing you're complaining about? But at least we'd know you're kidding. Rooney tries to pass it as journalism, when its really just a comedy act.

I don't think it's an act at all. I think he really is a cocky and bitter old man. His progression from moderately clever and insightful down to what he is now makes it seem like this is actually how he thinks. It's scary because his target audience votes en masse.

Just the title of this thread makes me envision a giant-sized Andy Rooney opening up the dome at Miller Park and complaining about overpackaging.

"Look at how few baseball players there are on that field. But from the outside, it looked like it could hold so many more..."

The article is a throw away for sure, but he does make one good point. Sports are unimportant. That's an important idea. That our culture has made sports important is kinda sad, when there are so many things out there that really are important. I'm as guilty as the next fan, wasting my time, living vicariously, etc. When the outcome will be of no great shakes. I enjoy it for sure, but I fail to see why enjoying anything justifies it--unless you're a dedicated hedonist (and I say this without sarcasm). Sports don't make the world better and quite frankly are redundant (like Reggae which I love as well, but can't intellectually justify either).

On the other hand W.H. Auden claimed that poetry was the most important human endeavor precisely because it was the most unimportant endeavor. It is a meaningful expression of humanity, and that it has nothing to do with our betterment or survival, makes it truly authentic. So maybe sports are important because they are completely unimportant and authentic. I can see both sides. But if the article was about soccer or fashion or reality television would the emotional reaction be the same--possibly.

I remember a bit he did once where he got pissed off at Cap'n Crunch -- because 1. There are no Cap'ns in the Navy -- and 2. All those sailors on the box looked too young to serve.

I must admit -- I do a real good Rooney impression, and when I want to make a point to my wife, I will bust off something like...

"Ya ever notice, how my tools never get returned to their tool-box, but instead can be found in the garden, bedroom, or silverware drawer."

or

"Ya ever notice, how my wife insists on buying 30 lbs of hamburger at one time, and then freezing it, so we have our entire freezer dedicated to a huge meatberg."

Needless to say my wife loathes Andy Rooney worse than any of you probably.

On a side note -- I am waiting for technology to catch up with those out of control eyebrows. I'd like to take a weed-wacker to them.
