Laynce Nix's value?

I know its AAA and not the majors, but Nix has 22 HR on the year. My question is with a good showing this year at AAA and the way Gross has swung the bat since coming back up from AAA. Any chances we could get good value in a trade for one of these guys? We don't need two lefty OF bats off the bench, but one could get value in a trade. Thoughts?

He'll be 27 next year and coming off a year where he struck out once every 3.34 AB's. He doesn't take many walks either. I can't see any team making him a primary target in a deal. He'll get more major league ABs somewhere as a guy who comes up to fill a spot due to injury, but not much more than that.

I actually asked about this awhile back in the trade rumor forum (I think)

If Laynce was right handed and putting up those numbers - he would be a decent option (cheap too) to platoon with Gross on the big league club. (Plus, if I remember, he plays center field too)

Being a lefty, he has no use to us. I just hope that we can find one team with a similiar player (limited upside - too old - no room) who is right handed that is looking for someone like Nix.

It's a long shot - but it's really only trading junk for junk. And we would actually be getting the worse half of the platoon. (As right handed platoon batters don't play that often) He does have a .913 OPS against right handed pitching.

He is the outfield version of Russell Branyan with speed.

I can see why you make the comparison, and I don't want to rekindle all the old Branyan arguments -- I haven't found myself pining for him or anything -- but the difference between a guy who can draw walks and a guy who can't is enormous.

Greg.

I agree, if Laynce was a right handed hitter he would be a great option for our OF. But he is a lefty and we already have a few of those. Hopefully they can use him as a valued nugget in a trade.

Not much value as anything but a 5th OF until he shows he can hit in the bigs. He'd be a guy I'd take a risk on though if I were rebuilding.

He showed he could hit in the big leagues in his first 500 ab's in the bigs. Played injured for his next 350 ab's. He is fully healthy now and it is showing.

I kind of like Laynce, but I don't know if he fits anywhere in the bigs. The change of scenery thing was supposed to be what happened when we got him in the trade from Texas last year. His power numbers have grown over the past month or so (maybe he's really found a grove?). He does have some value since he does play a pretty solid CF and has an above average arm.

He reminds me of Nelson Cruz; an older guy who strikes out a lot and hits a lot of home runs and doesn't walk a whole lot.

Of course, how they got to those points in their career is different. Cruz was a bit of a late bloomer in the minors, while Nix has had some injuries issues to overcome. Nix also had a fair number of appearances in the majors (250 games and 850 ABs), while Cruz didn't see regular time until he was moved to the Rangers.

As others have pointed out, if he were right-handed he'd be a candidate to platoon with Gross next year. Because he's left-handed, he's in direct competition with Gross, and given the Brewers in ability to get on base it would seem Gross has an edge over Nix.
