Contraction draft revisited

jaybird2001wi

I was thinking about this for awhile. Let's just say, hypothetically, the Marlins and DRays were contracted from baseball and they were to hold a contraction draft for the players on the team's 40-man rosters and have the worst team's pick first.

Here is who would be made available to the remaining 28 teams:

FLORIDA MARLINS

The Pirates would be absolutely nuts to take Willis first but I wouldn't put it past them.

It would add to their collection of lefties!

Honestly though, I'd imagine baseball would let these teams sell players to the highest bidders first to recoup some money.

The players union would never go for a retraction.

How great would it be to get MLB out of the sorry state of Florida!?

A lot of people think Milwaukee's a crummy place, too, for baseball and otherwise.

I grew up in Sarasota, and while the Marlins don't have much of an excuse, I feel like baseball and the franchise in Tampa Bay was never given a fair shake. This is a team that has never won more than 70 games, has three 100+ loss seasons and maybe one more this year (and two 99 loss seasons!). No wonder no one is coming out. It's a self-perpetuating cycle.

The area was treated like a pawn for more than a decade by every team wanting a new stadium (we came within minutes of the Tampa Bay White Sox, for one) and people were already pretty bitter about MLB by the team the team was awarded. Fair enough, that's in the past, but then when they finally get the team they're saddled with incredibly awful management (the Devil Rays franchise may literally never recover from the Naimoli/LaMar reign of incompetence) and born into what was already an out-of-date, uncomfortable stadium and a brutal division that said awful management begged for. Most folks from that area are from somewhere else, with fan baggage from elsewhere, but like everywhere else they'll pull for a winner and they'll rally around their new local winning team like they did with the Bucs in the 90s and Phoenix did with the D-Backs. But they haven't gotten there yet.

I say MLB needs to have a Tampa Bay team finish within at least a few games of .500 in their existence before they deem baseball not feasible down there.

Yeah, people (mostly ignorant East Coasters) may say Milwaukee is a crummy baseball town, but look at the attendance figures for the last couple years. Look at the TV ratings. We're supporting the team. Heck, look how many people came out for that short notice Angels-Indians series. People who say Milwaukee is a bad baseball town are full of garbage, and we really don't need to tolerate it at this point. The people in Florida (especially within Miami) are not supporting their team.

I don't see the Devil Rays relocating anytime soon, but the Marlins are basically a poster child for relocation, which is sad, since they've won two World Series Championships. I can't see any really viable cities for them to move to, though, other than Portland, and that would take away MLB's biggest bargaining chip when it comes to holding other cities hostage for new stadiums.

I always thought Indianapolis could support a baseball team. They are probably the biggest city in the nation without a baseball team and they have supported the Colts and Pacers in past history. They also have the Indy Indians, which does have a solid AAA history of winning games (which was one of the reasons they jilted us as our AAA team a few years back). With a team in Indianapolis, it could probably compete for fans with Cincinnati and Chicago since it is almost in between the two cities along I-65.

The Pirates would take Hanley Ramirez #1 overall. Cabrera might fall to 3rd because he may be a FA sooner, but he is by far the best player available. A quick and dirty top 15 -

Round 1

1. Pittsburgh Pirates - Hanley Ramirez/SS

2. San Francisco Giants - Miguel Cabrera/3b

3. Texas Rangers - Scott Kazmir/SP

4. Kansas City Royals - Delmon Young/OF

5. Chicago White Sox - Carl Crawford/OF

6. Cincinnati Reds - Dontrelle Willis/SP (didnt realize how bad the pitching was on these two teams)

7. Houston Astros - B.J. Upton/MI

8. Washington Nationals - Jeremy Hermida/OF

9. Baltimore Orioles - David Price/SP

10. St. Louis Cardinals - Evan Longoria/3b

11. Toronto Blue Jays - Josh Willingham/OF

12. Oakland Athletics - Rocco Baldelli/OF

13. Minnesota Twins - Andy Sonnastine/SP

14. Colorado Rockies - Anibal Sanchez/SP

15. Milwaukee Brewers - James Shields/P

I'm surprised MLB doesn't put a baseball team in the Deep South at some point, but maybe it's due to economic reasons. There's basically no teams in the southern region of the country, aside from the teams in Texas, Atlanta, and the Florida teams. You never hear about an area like Mobile or Jackson trying to get a team, for some reason.
