Has Melvin ever been *wrong* about a prospect?

twobrewers

I was just looking at some of the posts from the Inman thread and starting wondering if Melvin has ever traded away a prospect that really came back to bite us in the butt.

Everyone was up in arms when we traded away Nelson Cruz in the Lee trade. He is barely sticking with the big league club.

Many were upset at including Eveland in the Estrada trade. (Krynzel as well) And they have had no impact on Arizona at all.

They were some of our higher rated prospects at the time. So while I was upset at losing Inman and others...I guess I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Does anyone have any other minor leaguers he traded away that actually turned out to be quality MLB players? What about going back to his days in Texas?

I wouldn't go that far, as both showed little or nothing when called up. Had they been dealt a year or two before, people would have been much more upset as their respective values were higher at the time.

Sort of. In a radio interview before the deadline, Melvin said he was "scared to death" of Fernando Tatis coming back to bite him after he was dealt. But he had to do the deal, and it was what got Texas into the playoffs (his words, not mine as I don't know the details of that deal offhand). He said Tatis did have a few good years, but he never became the stud many thought he would become.

Here are some of the bigger trades that Dougie made as GM of the Rangers:

12/22/1994 - Traded Rich Aurilia and Desi Wilson to the San Francisco Giants for John Burkett (Aurilia became an All-Star for the Giants and played in SF for 9 years. Burkett didn't play for the Rangers until they traded for him again later in his career.)

7/31/1998 - Traded Darren Oliver, Fernando Tatis, and a PTBNL to the St. Louis Cardinals for Royce Clayton and Todd Stottlemyre. PTBNL ended up being Mark Little.

11/2/1999 - Traded Juan Gonzalez, Danny Patterson, and Gregg Zaun to the Detroit Tigers for Frank Catalanotto, Francisco Cordero, Bill Haselman, Gabe Kapler, Justin Thompson, and Alan Webb

7/19/2000 - Traded Esteban Loaiza to the Toronto Blue Jays for Darwin Cubillan and Michael Young

11/17/2000 - Traded Aaron Harang and Ryan Cullen to the Oakland Athletics for Randy Velarde

From that list, Aurilia and Harang seem to be the only "mistakes", but to be fair, Oakland traded away Harang for Jose Guillen a few years later. Looking through the Rangers' transaction history I was surprised to see that Dougie also drafted guys like Barry Zito (although he didn't sign), Edwin Encarnacion, and Carlos Pena. It doesn't seem like Dougie's been burned by traded away prospects too often in the past.

That was in the OP. I think BBK was just responding to that sentence.
