Jenkins "Where are you Mr Second Half?"

hauser42

It has been posted on here the last two years that Geoff Jenkins is a second half/pennant run producer, so far he has not gotten on one of his tears that was thought to be his birth right. This should happen a little easier this year with him only having to face right handed pitching and not the lefties that baffle him. Yet a team in playoff mode is still waiting for him.

There could be some very good reasons.

1. He has not gotten that streak yet. Problem here is there are 6 weeks left and time is running out.

2. Pennant pressure is getting to him and he will not get his streak in. Years past Brewers were not in the chase and no pressure to produce.

3.Jenkins has been a bit over rated on this site and not the player that some think he is or was.

4. Age has caught up to Jenkins and we should temper or expectations.

I'm not sure what it is but if anyone else can come up with some answers I would love to hear them. Dont care if they are thinking Jenkins will turn it around and get hot or if you think he never will this year.

Perhaps hauser meant to post it like this:

Yeah...he is, if I'm not mistaken, the third most productive Brewer on offense behind Braun and Fielder in the second half. You can find fault with a lot of things on this team, but Jenkins isn't really one of them (at the moment). I think it's nice that he's having his second half tear this year, and it actually means something.

I kind of laughed when I read where you said "some on this site might be overrating him." I think this site has been overly critical of him at times, personally. He's not my favorite player, and I won't be sad if he's gone after this year, either...but he's still contributing at the moment.

Yeah I have no idea where this is coming from, but if I was to guess at what his thought process is I could attribute it to one of 2 things:

Jenkins has been somewhat quiet in the Arizona series and these are 2 of the very few games he has watched in the last month.

Or

Jenkins previous hot streaks stood out so much more because everyone else on our team sucked. He had to carry the team because he was the only one producing. Now that we have Fielder, Braun, Hardy, etc to hit HRs and carry the offensive load, Jenkins solid/great numbers dont stand out as much this year.

I'm a little confused, as in the past 18 games, Jenkins has a .344 AVG, .391 OBP, .719 SLG, and 6 homers. That seems like a bit of a hot streak to me.
Take out the games from Aug 12 -15 when he had for of these homeruns and his stats fall. I'm not calling him out I'm wondering if he is going to carry this teams for a week or two like he has done in the past. We have not seen this yet and seeing if anyone sees him doing this. Right now this team could really use the white hot Jenkins we have had in the past to make a push for a playoff spot and it has yet to happen.

I checked the last ten days when Jenkins hit one of his dingers in a win which team won by 5 runs. His two homer game was about the only offense in a 6-4 loss. His other bombs came in some blow outs. When his he going to be the man getting some big hits that win this team some games down the stretch. There are better players this year but batting in the 5/6 spot means that you have to protect those guys on a regular basis. It is looking like Braun is seeing tougher pitches so Jenks and Hall need to be productive for this team to win.

Bingo. I hate to pile on, but I don't get your assessment hauser. These stats say it all, Jenkins has been as hot as anyone over the past few weeks. I'm guessing you haven't looked at any numbers and are going on recent memory, recent being as far back as yesterday.

EDIT--read your last post. While I see your point, I don't think you can just pull games out and then he say he's struggling. He was huge for us in those games and has otherwise been solid since the break. I don't think he's a "put the team on his back" kind of guy anymore, but I've been very pleased with his second half thus far.

but man, you can't "take away" things he's done. He hit those HRs. How, in any way (no offense, honest question), can you call a 1.110 OPS over roughly 20 games anything but white hot? I agree with the notion that it just doesn't stand out as much, given Prince & others - and the fact that he doesn't have to carry the team anymore. These are things about which to be happy! Viva la Cinco (la original)!

Jenkins goes 0 for 4 in one game and somebody starts complaining? News alert, Fielder and Braun didn't get any hits last night either.

Jenkins has been clutch all year. In extra innings he's 7 for 11 and has a 2.056 OPS. With RISP, he's hitting .286/.367/.591. He's having a fine year by his and most players standards.

To be fair, he's not starting against most lefties, so the numbers are stacked somewhat in his favor, but I very much agree that he's doing his job.

"To be fair he's not starting against lefthanders."

But, also to be fair, he's had some big hits off lefthanders including the 3 run blast off of Mike Stanton just last Saturday (how quickly people forget when it comes to Jenkins!). His 12 RBI in 57 AB's vs. lefties is pretty good as is his .472 slugging percentage.
