Wisconsin Flooding Problems

brewers255

Some areas of the state got 12-13 inches of rain in the past 48 hours. Here are some pictures of the flooding that took place.

Radar right now shows tons of rain in the same areas including watches and warnings for both severe thunderstorms and flooding problems. Does anyone here live close to the flooding problems? Here is the link to the radar:

wow. I feel for the people that lost homes and their stuff. Hope they had flood insurance.

But at the same time, they had to know that this was a possibility. Hmmmm, mudslides and flooding with homes next to a river. I never would have imagined.

It's a bit mean, I know. And I'm pretty sure you could argue that every homeowner has potential for things like this to happen--hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, etc.

The rain moving through tonight isn't going to help things.

Although in some cases, people should know better, the Kickapoo river was up to 17 feet (the normal is about 4 feet). I've been canoeing on that river before and it is almost always more of a creek than a river, and it is about 10-15 feet below the surrounding farmland in most areas.

When the water only gets that high every 25 or 50 years, it is easy to see how someone could get caught off guard. Still, considering how often we see pictures of floods in the news, one would be crazy not to purchase flood insurance even in areas that only flood every 100 years.

When I lived in Oregon -- people would buy million $$ houses and put them right on a cliff looking out on the Pacific Ocean. They asked the Gov. to bail them out, (when they started to dump into the pond) but he told them that the state had all of its money tied up in developing meth labs.

That sounds like the weather we had this past weekend. There were areas west and south of La Crosse that got 12-14 inches of rain Saturday and Saturday night, and then 2-3 more on Sunday.

developing meth labs.

Huh? I don't know if you meant getting rid of meth labs or were just joking...

As far as the flooding, the worst of it was around Winona and just west into Minnesota (just an hour south of me). Witoka got 18" of rain... in 24 hours. There were I think 250 or so people that stayed at St. Mary's University in Winona for that night and most went to stay with relatives after that. One older lady rode on the roof of her house as the house floated about 100 yards away from its foundation. Needless to say it's quite a mess, something those residents haven't seen in about 15 years.

The rainfall from overnight last night gave Madison just over 11 inches for the month (so far), which is the most recorded in any calendar month since recordkeeping began in 1871. Lots of places have it much worse right now, but at least we have a record to show for it after going through this crappy extreme weather.

Sorry to all the people who are getting flooded but man are the golf courses looking pretty for late August! this has been a bumper year for golfing to be honest. We've had many beautiful weekends and right as courses were drying out the rain came. We only had to suffer through about 2 weeks of dry courses and now every course is lush and beautiful like it's freshly spring! Although, the rough is really long now and the ball isn't rolling much on the fairway, so they're playing really long.

Also, look for the fall harvest to be huge this year with cheaper prices since the farmers used much less water and the plants are sure to grow big time. Get ready for some really great corn!

Hope you didn't waste your money prospecting on corn and such this year. It's going to be really cheap! Kind of a sick thought that farm produce prospectors only make good money when there is a drought and people suffer.

Speaking of floods, remember when Milwaukee County Stadium got flooded past the dugouts in the mid 1980's? I have the old VHS tape of "Super Duper Baseball Bloopers" created by Sports Illustrated which showed the flooding of the stadium and it was under the "Field of Bad Dreams" segment of the Blooper tape.

Folks, just stay inside! It's bad out and going to get worse by tomorrow night (at least). Three people died in Madison this afternoon because they were electrocuted. We're pretty dry (right now) in Sheboygan, but it's coming! I've never seen this much rain in one period of time....ever.

I am in Racine and had to head outside to put the lawn furniture in my parents' garage and also the propane grill in the garage since the winds gusted to the point where it blew the whole canvas cover off the grill. The winds are kicking in Racine right now. The clouds are kind of weird looking too.

Maybe I should get my Mom's digital camera and take some pics of the storm?

Sounds like they were waiting at a bus stop, today's storms knocked a powerline loose and it fell into standing water near them. Horrifying and really, really sad.

Oh, my goodness. As a Metro user (and a pedestrian when I'm not taking the bus), that hits close to home. The bus stop was near the Northport and Sherman intersection. Imagine being an eyewitness to that. Ah, geez.

That would be really scary to have seen that whole thing. Thankfully, I don't have to be outside tonight, and being in Sheboygan, we're not supposed to get the worst of it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one, because by looking at the radar, it does look like we'll get some rain, but it doesn't look like it will be as heavy as what everyone else is getting.

It's ridiculous how we got no rain at all for almost a month it seemed and now we've just been getting it nonstop for a little less than a week straight pretty much.

Anyone seen the latest radar? Looks like it should be raining for quite some time tonight and tomorrow also. Luckily it's not as bad here as it is on the western half. I'm lucky that because of the rain all that happens is I don't get to work so I don't get paid...very unfortunate for the people who's houses and towns are flooded.
