Sutton dissed?

RockCoCougars

I may have missed something, but it seems that the Brewers booth is going out of their way NOT to mention Darron Sutton. Throughout the first two games of the series, Mark Grace has been mentioned and shown on screen several times, but I haven't heard a word about Sutton. When Grace was shown on camera, it almost seems like the camera guys made an effort to keep Sutton out of the picture.

Yeah, watching Daron on the mlb.tv package is a breath of fresh air. I've enjoyed watching Anderson's positive transition this season and he seems to feel very comfortable now and gets into Brewers' good plays and HR calls a lot more now than earlier in the season. Having said that, I still am partial to Sutton because of his great enthusiasm and sense of humor. Watching/listening to him over the last two days feels still very natural and almost like he hasn't stopped calling games for the Brew Crew. The only difference is he now semi roots for the DBacks but does have positive things to say about the Brewers as we can all imagine.

I'm upset if the Brewers announcers (namely Schroeder) neglects to mention Daron or talk a little bit about his time with the Brewers. It would be classy to acknowledge his role with the DBacks and give a little anecdote or two about working with Sutton for all those years, even if it isn't 100% sincere.

Sutton was kind of a dork and I never really got into him. He didn't annoy me or anything and I don't think he was bad, I just didn't care for his approach. I'm much happier with Anderson. He's really progressed well this season.

I like how he takes pauses to let it all in. He doesn't feel he has to talk over everything. Not that Darron did, but Brian's approach is a little more in the style of letting the game do the talking.

Sutton was on EI tonight (at least for me) and it was enough to remind me why I was so happy to see him leave. He is just unbearable. Going into one commercial break, he screeched "let's get em some runs" so loudly/highly that the mic didn't even pick it up very well. He's an embarrassment to his profession, to baseball, and to the D'Backs. I can never figure out why baseball allows such dopes to be the faces/voices of the game.

They always mention Vasgersian when they play the Pads, so maybe there was some bad blood between Sutton and the Brewers' guys before he heft.

That has more to do with the fact that Brain Anderson and Matty V have been friends for a long time, but you could be right. I never got the impression that Bill and Darron were really more than co workers though. I remember Bill talking about how surprised he was when Darron announced he was leaving. He said something along the lines of "I just talked to him a few days ago and he didn't mention it". Maybe he felt slighted by DS leaving him in the dark. Either way I wouldn't read to much into it.

Watching the last few games on MLB.tv, i'm kind of glad we no longer have him. He seemed kind of obnox. but calling him an He's an embarrassment to his profession, to baseball, and to the D'Backs is a little much.

Also Bill S does a decent job, there are A LOT of color guys far worse then him.. And I'd say Mark Grace is one of the worse i've ever heard (Next to Del Crandel).

I like Schroeder. He brings a sort of "every man" quality to the booth. I know some people don't like it, but I feel you have to have someone there to lighten things up a little bit. I like some of the insight he provides as a former catcher as well.

Watching the Extra Innings package, you could feel the room get cool when the camera panned to a guy wearing a Brewer "bucket head" with a nice message to Sutton. Sutton brushed it off with something like "oh there's a guy referring to a bit I did in my previous job". He never explained it further other than a brief mention of Schroeder who the camera then showed. Actually it was Grace who had more to say about Schroeder than Sutton.

I also thought Grace was much, much more complimentary of Brewer players than was Sutton. Sutton said some nice things about Hardy, and once slipped and called Hall "Billy", but for the most part, if you'd have listened you never would have thought it was the same guy who spent 5 seasons gushing about each and every Brewer who was in the lineup. He pretty much dissed Bush the entire game, had more to say about Turnbow as an Angel than a Brewer, and acted like it was a total surprise that Gabe Gross (who he saw hit 9 HR last year) could possibly have gone deep against the great D-Back pitching staff.

He did talk up Hardy a bit, but I got the sense it was because Hardy is a Tucson native. He also had some good things to say about Prince, but only after Grace was gushing over a 500 foot foul ball.

Good riddance.

My problem with Schroeder is that he's supposed to be the guy giving "inside" information about how to play the game and he gives wrong info about leadoff walks scoring, clutch hitting, etc.

Sutton does a radio show in Milwaukee still. He still has a big attachment to the Brewers. My guess is that he was trying hard not to show that. After the Angels, The Brewers are likely Sutton's favorite team.

I heard the Arizona broadcast of the game last night and it sounded like a typical Sutton game. As mentioned, he had a number of nice things to say about the Brewers as well. Of course, I didn't have a problem with him as a Brewers announcer. I guess how you felt about him as a Brewers announcer, is how you would felt listening to him call the game last night.

It is true that when they panned to the "Bucketheads" in the stands, Daron felt almost compelled to say something about it but hardly gave a winded explanation about it. Grace mentioned Schroeder "knows his stuff" and is a good man and is a good color guy too. From my memory, Sutton didn't even respond or further comment on that. I thought it was a little strange at the time. If you followed Brewers broadcasts in seasons past, you could tell Schroeder was almost uncomfortable at times around Daron and you just got the sense that they weren't the type of partners who went out to dinner or have cocktails with each other at the team hotel after games.

The uncomfortable silence of Bill after certain things Daron said, as well as the number of times Bill would call Daron "partner" made it clear to me that they were the odd couple that never really gelled. If anything, the synergy between Bill and BA is refreshing, even if at this point, BA's skills when it come to interpreting what is happening on the field are inferior to Daron's.

I think some of you guys get a little too angry about announcers.
