Tim Wakefield

bbrauch2000

This guy amazes me. With yesterday's win, he put himself into a tie for the major league lead in wins and passed Sandy Koufax on the all time list.

Beyond that, he's had a decision in every game he's pitched in this year. I'm looking up the modern day record for most starts in a season without a no decision but havent found it yet.

From Rob Neyer's chat today:

Doug (NY): Gaylord Perry had 40 in 1972

SportsNation Rob Neyer: 40 decisions in 40 starts, you mean? Wow .... What? There's more?

Andrew (NJ): Update on Perry - it was 1972, and he got decisions in his first 11 starts of 1973 and last three of 1971, so that's 54 in a row.

SportsNation Rob Neyer: Thanks.

Wasn't he a thirdbaseman in the minors? Not a bad career choice. Learn a knuckleball and go from jorneyman minor league lifer to solid major league pitcher for what, about 10 years, so far?

This is already his 15th year, actually. Can you believe it?

Wakefield started the season finale for Boston in County Stadium in 1994, when everyone thought this could be the final game since MP wasn't approved yet. Bill Wegman played RF the ninth inning.

I was in New England this past April and stuck my head in a sports bar to see Wakefield pitching against Toronto and I said "Wow, he's still pitching" and the guy at the door said "Yeah."
