By the way, similar to Yovani Gallardo and Will Inman, on the next level of anticipation with Manny Parra and Zach Braddock, we need to start including Mike McClendon of the Power.

Normally I'm not of the "Promote Them Immediately" mode, but in two-to-three weeks, when hopefully Huntsville, Brevard, and West Virginia have all completed first-half schedules with a ticket to the postseason, I can't wait for the flurry of roster adjustments that will likely follow.

the sally league is pretty neutral i think...

greensboro, where they play tonight, is a massive hitters park though...so if mcclendon succeeds he should be given extra credit...

Dillon Powers Sounds To 13-4 Win Over Tucson

NASHVILLE ? Joe Dillon belted two home runs, including a grand slam, and tied a Sounds record with seven RBIs to lead Nashville to a 13-4 thumping of the visiting Tucson Sidewinders on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium in the clubs' series opener.

The win was the fourth in a row for Nashville (31-25) and the 18th victory in the club?s last 23 home games.

Dillon?s two longballs highlighted a 13-hit night for the Sounds. Laynce Nix and Mike Rivera also homered and the top four batters in the Nashville lineup combined to go 8-for-16 with 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored on the evening.

Dillon continued his red-hot hitting for Nashville in becoming the sixth player in the club?s 30-year history to drive in seven runs in a game; the last was Humberto Cota in 2002. The seven RBIs established a new career high for the veteran, eclipsing a six-ribbie day on June 8, 2004.

Dillon has hit safely in 18 of his last 21 games at a .387 clip (29-for-75) for the Sounds.

Tucson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Nix put Nashville in the lead in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer to dead center off Sidewinders starter Dustin Nippert, his fifth roundtripper of the year.

Nashville blew the game open with a five-run second against Nippert, increasing the lead to 8-1. Dillon?s grand slam highlighted the flurry.

After the visitors plated a single run in the third, former Sound Dave Krynzel belted a two-run homer off ex-teammate Zach Jackson in the top of the fourth to halve the Nashville lead at 8-4. The blast was the outfielder?s second of the season.

The Sounds got those runs right back in the bottom of the fourth when Dillon struck again with a three-run homer to left off Tucson reliever Mike Schultz. The tater was his seventh of the year.

Rivera wrapped up the evening?s scoring in the sixth with a two-run homer to left off Bill Murphy, the catcher?s ninth four-bagger of the campaign.

Zach Jackson (6-3) snapped a four-start winless stretch for Nashville and picked up the victory after allowing four runs on eight hits over seven innings of work.

Steve Bray worked two scoreless frames from the hill to close out the game for the Sounds.

Nippert (0-2) took the defeat after surrendering eight runs on four hits and four walks over only three innings of action.

Jose Macias went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot for the Sounds and scored three runs in the contest.

The teams continue the series with another 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday night. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn will make his Sounds debut as Nashville?s starting pitcher. Tucson will counter with right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (5-3, 5.03).

Williams Carries Chattanooga to Comeback Win

Marland Williams delivered the tie-breaking two-run double in Chattanooga?s four-run eighth inning rally that carried the home side to a 9-6 comeback win over Huntsville Saturday night in the opener of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Lookouts won for a second straight night with a two-run, two-bagger in the eighth inning to improve to 25-31, while the Stars slipped to 29-25 but remain tied for the top spot in the North Division after Tennessee fell at home to Birmingham. The Stars lost for a fourth time in 15 games when they have scored first and for only a ninth time in 34 games when they have scored four or more runs.

Robert Hinton threw scoreless relief in the sixth and seventh innings to extend the bullpen?s shutout streak to 13 straight innings before Luis Pena took over in the eighth. Former Milwaukee Brewer Enrique Cruz led off with a single and scored to tie the game at six on a Cody Strait double. Jay Garthwaite was hit by a pitch and Williams then delivered his decisive hit on a gapper to left-center field. Pinch-hitter Caonabo Cosme singled to left field and when Drew Anderson overran the ball, it allowed Williams to score to make it 9-6. Williams had been mired in a 4-for-33 slump prior to driving in three runs with two hits. Carlos Guevara allowed a one-out single to Brendan Katin while striking out the side in the ninth to earn his seventh save in as many chances.

The Stars scored first for a second straight game in the first inning on a two-out, two-run double by Anderson and a run-scoring hit by Lou Palmisano, who has knocked in a run in eight of his last 12 games on the road. Chattanooga got right back into the game in the bottom half of the inning when Ryan Hanigan singled home two runs with two outs. Stars? starter Sam Narron has been scored on in the first inning in three of his five starts away from home and in six of his 11 turns this season.

The Stars added an unearned run in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead and moved out to a 5-2 lead in the third when Palmisano doubled home Ruben Mateo, who left the game after the half inning with a nagging hamstring injury and was replaced by Katin. Williams opposite field home run to right field trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the fourth and was the first long ball allowed by Narron since April 21 at Montgomery, a stretch of seven starts.

Anderson?s run-scoring triple in the fifth pushed the visitors lead to 6-3 but the Lookouts tallied twice in the home half on a run-scoring single by Paul Janish and a Hanigan sacrifice fly. Narron was charged with five runs on nine hits over five frames.

The series continues Sunday afternoon, as the Stars will send southpaw Manny Parra to the hill against Lookouts? left-hander Camilo Vazquez. Coverage of the game begins at 1:00 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER STREAK SNAPPED AT SEVEN

The West Virginia Power?s seven game winning streak came to an end on Saturday night at First Horizon Park as the Power fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 10-3.

Greensboro scored early and often and they never trailed in the game. Logan Morrison?s three-run homer put the Grasshoppers ahead in the first inning. In the third Spike McDougall reached on a fielder?s choice to score Scott Cousins and Morrison doubled in McDougall later in the inning. The Power plated their first two runs in the top of the fourth on Chuckie Caufield?s solo home run, his third of the year, and John Alonso?s run-scoring double.

Greensboro answered with a four-run fourth inning. Chris Coghlan singled in the first run, Jake Blackwood doubled in the next two and Chris Hatcher?s RBI single plated the final run of the inning. Greensboro scored their final run of the game on a solo home run from Scott Cousins in the fifth inning, and West Virginia plated their final run on Brent Brewer?s solo bomb in the sixth, his third homer of the season.

Tom Cowley (3-2) allowed two runs on five hits over five innings to get the win, and Mike McClendon (5-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight runs on eight hits over three and two thirds. The eight runs and eight hits are the most McClendon has surrendered in a single game this season.

The Power fell to 37-16 with the loss and the Grasshoppers improved to 31-25 with the win. All nine in the Power starting lineup reached safely. Taylor Green paced the Power with three hits, and Michael Brantley had two, giving him 15 hits in the first five games of the road trip.

The Power will continue the four game series against Greensboro Sunday evening. The Power will start right hander Jeremy Jeffress (1-0, 5.40) and the Grasshoppers will counter with right hander Derell McCall (2-5, 4.29). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM (4:00 Central).

Huntsville Stars notebook

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

Covering the bases

The pennant race, if you haven't noticed, is on. It truly began in earnest Saturday night when the Stars opened a series at Chattanooga, the first of the 15 remaining games this half.

It's looking like a two-team race in the Southern League North between Huntsville and Tennessee, and the Stars can help keep Chattanooga and West Tenn out of the mix, since their next 10 games are against those two clubs.

"We can't worry about everybody else," said Stars manager Don Money. "We just have to worry about ourselves."

At least the worry is different from a year ago, when the Stars were 21-33 through their first 54 games, after a 13-game losing streak. ...

Pitcher Mike Jones returned from a rehab assignment in Arizona to retrieve his belongings last week, then headed back to Arizona. Brewers team physicians are to examine his troublesome elbow this week in Milwaukee and it seems likely he's gone for the year, and could perhaps face surgery (see sepearate thread here). ... The Stars have pulled their team average above .260, a nice climb in the last month. "Everybody is feeding off everybody else," Money said. ...

As the weekend began, Triple-A Nashville was the only one of five Milwaukee teams not leading or tied for first. ... Ulyses Davenport, who began the season in Huntsville and was recently released, has hooked on with Pittsburgh's Single-A club in Lynchburg, Va. ... Lou Palmisano's special pink-and-white jersey, worn Friday to promote breast cancer awareness, drew the highest bid, at $550. ... It's another Drew Anderson vs. Drew Anderson showdown this week, with the Stars' outfielder owning a statistical edge (.450, 8 RBIs in 11 games with Huntsville) over the Lookouts infielder of the same name (.287, 25 RBIs in 50 games). ...

Around the league

Southern League president Don Mincher accepted an award Wednesday on behalf of a former teammate, Reggie Jackson, who was inducted into the Birmingham Barons Hall of Fame at the annual Rickwood Classic. Also inducted were Walt Dropo, Norm Zauchin and Joe Drake. ... Though a power-hitter, Jackson long held the league record for triples in a season, and was finally bypassed in 1977 by Alan Trammell, who still owns the record. ... The Stars will face one of the league's hottest pitchers on Tuesday. Carlos Fisher, a Chattanooga right-hander, is 1-1 but has a 1.16 ERA in five starts. He had an 18-inning home scoreless streak snapped in his last start, after he had retired the first 14 batters he faced. ... Lookouts owner Frank Burke and manager Jayhawk Owens wore matching suits of armor outside the Tennessee Aquarium on Friday, reported David Paschall of The Chattanooga Times-Free Press. The reason? To promote "knight games" at AT&T Park. ... Busy night Thursday in Jackson. The umpiring crew of Jason Dunn, Eric Loveless and Nicholas Nolde tossed both managers, Tennessee's Pat Listach and West Tenn's Eddie Rodriguez.

Brewings

Triple-A Nashville Sounds (30-25 before Saturday's play, second place in Pacific Coast League American Division): P Yovani Gallardo 8-1, league-leading 2.14 ERA after beating Las Vegas Friday with 11 Ks in seven innings

Single-A Brevard County Manatees (33-21, first in Florida State East Division): P Will Inman 4-2, league-leading 1.33 ERA with 84 Ks in 67 2/3 IP

Single-A West Virginia Power (37-15, first in South Atlantic League Northern Division this half): 1B Michael Brantley with five hits Thursday; the son of ex-major leaguer Mickey Brantley, he has three times had four-hit games.

On deck

The Stars continue at Chattanooga today at 1:15, then move on to West Tenn Thursday. The next home game is June 13, against Birmingham.

Chattanooga Lookouts Rally To Beat Huntsville Stars Saturday, 9-6

by Tim Evearitt, the Chattanoogan

The Chattanooga Lookouts defeated the Huntsville Stars scoring four runs in the eighth for a come-from-behind win Saturday night, 9-6.

Nearly 5,000 fans jammed into AT&T Field for baseball and fireworks. Unlike Friday night?s fireworks provided by Mississippi Phillip Wellman?s incredible performance, tonight?s game was all baseball.

Richie Gardner saw his earned run average balloon from 0.00 to 3.14 after Saturday?s starting pitcher gave up five earned runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. In the end, Gardner was not the pitcher of record.

Huntsville?s Sam Narron did not have easy sailing either. The tall left-hander (second-cousin of Cincinnati manager Jerry Narron) gave up five runs on nine hits.

The Lookouts bullpen was outstanding: three hurlers went four innings without giving up a run.

Chattanooga had 13 hits and left six runners on base.

Marland Williams went 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBI; Ryan Hanigan was 1-2 with 3 RBI; Gardner was 2-2; Cody Strait was 2-4 with an RBI; Drew Anderson went 2-5; Paul Janish was 2-5

The Stars wasted little time getting to work in the first frame. Huntsville?s Drew Anderson drove in two runs and Lou Palmisano got the third RBI. Stars 3 Looks 0

In their first at bat, the Lookouts put up two runs. Chattanooga?s Anderson singled and raced to third on a double by Janish. With two outs, catcher Hanigan drove in both runners with a single to right. Stars 3 Looks 2

Huntsville added single runs in the second and third innings. Stars 5 Looks 2

The Lookouts closed the gap with a run in the fourth on Williams' solo home run, but the visitors added a run in the top of the fifth frame.

Anderson and Janish duplicated their first inning feat in the fifth frame. Anderson singled and scored on Janish?s second double of the game. Stars 6 Looks 5

In the eighth inning, Chattanooga took control of the game. Strait?s RBI double tied the game followed by Williams? two-run line-drive double to the left field wall. This action was followed by Caonabo Cosme?s pinch hit single and a fielding error that scored the ninth run (fourth of the inning). Looks 9 Stars 6

Tyler Pelland (3-4) was the winning pitcher. He threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Carlos Guevara gave up a hit while striking out the side to pick up his seventh save.
