hmm, i guess i didn't see that coming. He has been pretty bad latley, except for the great outing tonight. Just didn't think he would get sent down. That being said, I don't mind this move. This will get him much needed rest and hopefully get him back to where he was at the begining of the year.

Is this to get him stretched out in case the blister keeps Sheets from returning soon? That way Yo could go to the bullpen to keep his innings down, and Carlos could have a go at starting. Probably not the case, but it seems to make sense to me. The other possibility along those lines is that this could be getting CV stretched out to take Cappy's spot in the rotation, but I hope that's not the case.

I hope CV is getting stretched out to take the bizarro CV's spot in the rotation.

Definitely surprising, but that explains why they would let him pitch 3 innings tonight. Someone's got to start in September once Yo needs to be taken out of the rotation for innings reasons, and Villy's still got a lot of innings to play with IIRC.

It's in the JSOnline game article, too:

Quote:

"Carlos Villanueva, also in need of a solid outing after posting a 10.80 earned run average in his previous 18 games, covered the final three innings for his first major-league save. It was the Brewers' first shutout since they blanked Florida, 3-0, on June 3.

"In what seemed like odd timing, the Brewers announced after the game that they were sending Villanueva to Class AAA Nashville and calling up right-hander Seth McClung (2-0, 1.42). It was a predetermined move to get the previously struggling Villanueva some work minus the pressure of a race.

"'We want him to start some games and get sharpened up,' Yost said."

The things I like about this are two-fold:

1. McClung has been pitching great at Nashville, and they could use a bullpen guy to come up and do what Gross has done on offense since coming up.

2. Not only does CV get to stretch out a bit, but the timing of this move is important: By sending him down after the 8/20 game, they can still bring him back up on 8/30 or 8/31 without any problems (10-day minimum stay unless there's an injury) and still be free and clear to put CV on the playoff roster.

If the latter is correct, then I especially commend Melvin on the move. Maybe tonight's great outing by CV is compounded by being able to get himself back on track more consistently in Nashville before returning to Brew Town.

Oh man this stinks. I hope Villenueva gets recalled BEFORE September 1st. Don't get me wrong, but if he is called up AFTER the first is he not eligible for postseason?? Ned Yost, or should I say Doug Melvin needs to have his head examined with this move. :-( I am thoroughly baffled.

Is Villy going to get rest by using him in the rotation?

Yes. Four out of five games he can go to the ballpark knowing he won't be used at all. Otherwise he has to get ready to be either a long man or a 7th inning fireman. Also one of Ned's problems is warming guys up without putting them in. Villy, iirc, has had a lot of warm-ups with no appearance. Or he warms up, sits down, warms back up, and then finally comes in. For a guy that was always a starter this will be very restful.

edit:

Cappy removed from rotation

Hmm, Cappy removed from the rotation. So we have a 4 man rotation and won't need a 5th man until....September 1st. About a day or two after Villy, who is back to starting, will be elgible to be back up. And both moves were announced on the same day.
