Cappy sent to bullpen... only 4 starters needed

I'm amazed at the people that "feel for Capuano".

Capuano knows the deal. You go 16 straight starts without your team winning, you know your job isn't safe anymore. He's probably relieved.

I understand when a guys been around for a few years there is some attachment, but geez players come and go in this game. Capuano is still getting paid handsomely. He still has a major league job, and if he shows he's successful out of the pen that might benefit the Brewers a lot more than his "ok" starts that he never seems to win.

Why are you amazed, and why is this even slightly offensive to you? Cap's a class act, who worked his way off the injury junk-heap here in Milwaukee, has proven he can 'do it' when he's right, and he's struggling mightily this year. Why wouldn't you still expect people to root for a player like that? This isn't Milton Bradley here. I can't think of one response that said, 'I feel bad for Capuano because now he doesn't make as much $', or 'Now the Brewers are toast without Chris!' People just like to root their team & players, win or loss. It wasn't too long ago that the Brewers didn't even have a core group of players, just a Selig-ly greased revolving door. I welcome the change, personally.

I guess I am just more of an old school fan. I recall the days where pitchers would get 10 Complete Games a season and you wouldn't even blink. There were plenty of pitchers in the 70's & 80's that pitched tons of innings and made it through the years without injury. Perhaps the game has changed since those days but the whole babying of starters drives me crazy.

Yes, I can see your argument regarding the Marlins pitchers last year. That was just a string of really bad luck. But I really think Gallardo has a bulldog mentality and is not a weakling. heh. The bottom line is I just want to see a quality baseball team in Milwaukee. Very happy how Gallardo pitched last night. He was dealing that's for sure.

It really has more to do with his youth than his "toughness." Younger pitchers just aren't used to pitching that many innings, and the risk of injury is greater the longer you let a young pitcher's inning pile up.

But back on subject, I hope Cappy gets straightened out soon. Especially since Cappy would be a valuable trading chip this offseason and his value has slipped lately.

Thank you again Mr. Briggs for some perspective, and davego - excellent reference. You lose 16 starts in a row and have an ERA over 5.00 and, nothing personal, it's just business. You're a great guy Cappy, but we're not in the business of feel-good stories; we're in the business of winning. And frankly, I and a million other Brewers fans waited too long for this. This and Villy's demotion should have happened a month ago. Or at least have them switch roles and see if it helps either.

One need not look any further than Kerry Wood and Mark Prior to see what overuse of a young pitcher does.

And as for the future, look no further than Clark & Addison in Chicago - how scary good would the Cubs be this year with a healthy Wood & Prior? Don't you think Cubs fans are steaming about how they were treated by Baker?

Thinks aren't always as simple as the media presents them. It's easy to look at his winless streak and conclude Cappy has sucked but it's just not a fair assessment. Capuano has had no run support and a terrible defense behind him all year. Fora mediocre pitcher like Cappy, the winless streak really isn't that surprising when everything is considered.

Has he been good? No but he hasn't been that bad, either.
