Cappy sent to bullpen... only 4 starters needed

I know I shouldn't be this surprised, but... WOW

EDIT: Ok, after reading the article, it sounds more like a 'sitting the cold hand when we can get by with 4 SP' than 'extreme demotion out of starting rotation'

I feel really bad for Cappy because he has always been a class act. But maybe he might have more success if he only has to pitch a few innings. He seems to lose it after a while.

So he's going to throw from the bullpen a couple times and then probably go right back to the rotation when Sheets comes back and Gallardo is near his innings limit. Thats my take on the move at least.

If the Crew was either firmly in control of the division, or clearly out of the playoff chase, I'd be fine with watching Yo's innings.

But if Yo is one of the best five starters, then he's gotta be in the rotation. Forget the innings limit. This may be the shot the Crew has to get into the playoffs - my inclination is to roll the dice.

The vast majority of this team's core is going to be around for the next couple years; I'd rather not potentially turn Yo into a sacrificial lamb so that we can reach the playoffs now, especially when we'll likely have chances the next few years.

Had he not made two bad pitches in that game. He would still be starting. So does this mean Parra goes in the rotation?

Edit: Own question answered. 4 man rotation.

Such is often the case in a bad start. 2 bad pitches. Except both of them were with men on base. Fact is, Cappy allowed 5 ER in 6 1/3 inning, which is not anything close to a good start.

Maybe not a good start, but it doesn't mean he wasn't pitching ok, which is what Yost said.

Agreed. It's really tough to judge performance based on one start. Of course, Cappy is being judged on far more than that. Still, I can't imagine Cappy not being in the rotation down the stretch.

He did look like he was throwing ok, which I won't disagree with. I was more commenting on the "aside from 2 bad pitches, he was fine" post. I think in most starts where a pitcher gives up 4 or 5 runs, it usually comes down to 1 or 2 bad pitches that turn it from a good or average start to a bad one.

The problem (as Russ alludes to) is when those one or two bad pitches (or more) come back to haunt you 16 starts in a row.

I'm sure Cappy will be back in the rotation soon, and justifiably so. He has the track record that certainly indicates he's more of a #3 than a mop up guy, and frankly, the team will need him if they're to make the playoffs.

Man, that's a kick between the wickets for Cappy. I hope he's able to get his head straight and turn it back around. To be fair to him though, the Brewers should have won on Sunday. Does this mean he's not a guaranteed starter for next year?

Oh geez, what's with all this Gallardo pitch limit stuff? Good Lord! He is in the rotation to stay for the remainder of this season and beyond. If it takes him 7 innings an outing than so be it. SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can see it now, the Brewers make it to the post season and Ned decides to allow Gallardo to start game 2 or 3 and after 4 innings that's it. Sorry Yovanni can't let you go any longer.. blah!

To be fair, Capuano was the pitcher who was staked to a 5-0 lead, and in three innings after that, he managed to leave the game with it tied, and with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. That was against a reds lineup that was without Javier Valentin and a guy named Griffey, too. He was as much to blame for the loss as anyone, which has been the case for the vast majority of the 16 consecutive starts he's made that have resulted in Brewers losses. Yost didn't demote him for his performance this one start, it's been a struggle for 3 months now.

As for him starting next season - I think there's a good chance that he's not on this roster come spring training next year. If Milwaukee believes that Parra can start in the bigs, and with Gallardo, Sheets, and Suppan (due to his contract, not performance) basically guaranteed starting spots in the rotation, that leaves one spot in the rotation between Bush, Vargas, Capuano, and Villenueva...if Capuano thrives as a reliever, he may fit into that same role next season...otherwise he's as good a bet to be traded this offseason as Bush or Vargas is.

Its called having a clue about how to run a baseball team. The Tigers shut Verlander down for part of last year too even though they were in a pennant chase. Getting Gallardo injured to try to win 1 or 2 more games this year simply is not worth it.

Check out the Marlins-- They burned up a lot of young arms last year, and then this year had to put BY Kim in their rotation -- I'm sure Kim will be available for our rotation next year if we blow up Yo and Parra, but let's assume none of us want to see that happen.

I'm amazed at the people that "feel for Capuano".

Capuano knows the deal. You go 16 straight starts without your team winning, you know your job isn't safe anymore. He's probably relieved.

I understand when a guys been around for a few years there is some attachment, but geez players come and go in this game. Capuano is still getting paid handsomely. He still has a major league job, and if he shows he's successful out of the pen that might benefit the Brewers a lot more than his "ok" starts that he never seems to win.

Just a few bad pitches sounds much like the Lindy Infante days of just being 7 plays away from the playoffs or something like that.

I want Yo to keep rolling too, but as stated it would be nice to not blow him out for 08 and it is also not real fair to the kid either. Reference: Nick Neugebauer (obvious statement).

Furthermore, there's a whole thread about this if you really don't understand why it's an issue.

I guess I am just more of an old school fan. I recall the days where pitchers would get 10 Complete Games a season and you wouldn't even blink. There were plenty of pitchers in the 70's & 80's that pitched tons of innings and made it through the years without injury. Perhaps the game has changed since those days but the whole babying of starters drives me crazy.

Yes, I can see your argument regarding the Marlins pitchers last year. That was just a string of really bad luck. But I really think Gallardo has a bulldog mentality and is not a weakling. heh. The bottom line is I just want to see a quality baseball team in Milwaukee. Very happy how Gallardo pitched last night. He was dealing that's for sure.
