ESPN: The Face of the Franchise

I nearly wet myself.

Save that for the "pee yourself for the playoffs" website.http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

RedsReporter.com:

Juan Castro

The face of the Reds franchise in 2007 is without a doubt utility infielder Juan Castro. He sucks. And the Reds have sucked for a long time. There is little redeeming about Castro as a player, just as there is little redeeming about a Reds franchise that seems adrift these days, with no clear plan of how to pull themselves out of the mess that has been the past seven years. The Reds have had plenty of players on their team the past few seasons that have no business being on a major league roster, but Castro is the worst, and he's the greatest example of why things are looking pretty bleak in Cincinnati these days.

Beautiful.

I went with Uecker as well. Another thing that should be added to his resume should be the Miller commericals, and Admiral commercials with the Zamboni. I grew up trying to imitate the home run call, and the call itself made it in to Miller Park by Bernie's slide. He is the MC for every major event at Miller Park, and everyone, regardless if they are a baseball fan or not, knows who he is.

If we're looking for the CURRENT Face of the Franchise, the one person you most associate with the 2007 Brewers, I'd have to go with Ryan Braun. he's young, very talented, successful, but ultimately very unpolished. The potential is there.

But when you free-associate with a given franchise's name, the first one leaping to mind is Bob Uecker. If Robin Yount would have stuck around to coach, or at least associate his name/image with the franchise, it would be a coin flip, but to me, no one embodies the long-suffering Wisconsin native who has been there, through the lean years, and is still around, as Ueck does.

"So if this fruit's a Brewer's fan, his ass gotta be from Wisconsin...(or Chicago)."

That's so awesome.

Great choice, Automator. Uecker has given more enjoyment to Brewer fans over the years then the product on the field has. I can turn a Brewer game on the radio at any time, and within 5 minutes Ueck will have me laughing.

As for the RedsReporter's response: That's pretty bold. I'm surprised that ESPN even put it on their website. It's pretty funny, though. The Brewer's have had their share of "Juan Castros" over the years.

The Pirates one is almost as good as the Reds.

BucsDugout.com:

Jack Wilson

Like the Pirates themselves, Jack Wilson is consistent, unjustly well-compensated, and not nearly good enough. For fielding a 69-win team with a suspiciously small payroll in 2006, Major League Baseball rewarded the Pirates with $25 million in revenue-sharing; for fielding grounders and posting a .299 on-base percentage in 2005, the Pirates rewarded Wilson with a $20 million contract. By 2006 winning percentage, the Bucs were the fourth worst team in the big leagues; by 2006 OPS, Wilson was the majors' fourth worst regular shortstop. In any given year, the Pirates are mediocre at best, and yet the ownership appears to be satisfied with that; Wilson, meanwhile, is also mediocre at best, so maybe it's appropriate that the organization treats him like a star.
