Moss's Spectacular Catch Saves the Day!

 

Steve Moss?s leaping catch as he crashed into the wall in center field to end the eighth inning helped preserve the lead in Huntsville?s 5-4 win over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon in the second of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars won for a fourth time in the last five games to improve to 30-25 on the season and maintained at least a share of first place in the North Division, pending the outcome of Tennessee?s game later Sunday against Birmingham, while the Lookouts fell to 25-32 and six games off the pace.

 

Stars? starter Manny Parra worked seven solid innings, giving up two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four and was followed on the hill by Bo Hall, who took over in the eighth with a 5-2 lead. Paul Janish doubled with one out and scored when Enrique Cruz singled into right field. Hall struck out Cody Strait and was then replaced by Marino Salas, who had not gone longer than an inning to register any of his 11 saves.

 

Salas walked pinch-hitter Tyrell Godwin on four pitches, gave up a single to Caonabo Cosme that loaded the bases and then walked J.C. Boscan to force in Cruz to make it 5-4. Garthwaite then crushed a 2-2 pitch just to the left of straightaway center and Moss went back and to his right to jump up and pull down what could have turned out to be the decisive hit in the game. Salas gave up a leadoff single to Luis Bolivar in the ninth but retired the next three hitters to earn his 12th save in as many tries and preserve the Stars fourth win in seven games against the Lookouts.

 

Drew Anderson?s run-scoring hit in the first inning staked the home side to a 1-0 lead and marked the fifth time in as many starts on the road that Parra has been scored on in the first inning. The Stars took the lead for good in the second inning on a two-run single by Yohannis Perez, who delivered his first hit of the year that knocked in more than one run. Parra singled home a two-out run in the fourth to make it 3-1 Huntsville and Perez?s two-run double in the sixth pushed the visitors? advantage to 5-1. Adam Heether, who lost a 15-game hitting streak Saturday night, singled and doubled and scored three times for the Stars, who have collected a dozen hits in each of the first two games of the series.

 

Garthwaite hit a wind-aided, opposite field home run to right field with two outs in the seventh off of Parra to trim the Stars lead to 5-2. It was just the second long ball allowed this season by the Stars? southpaw, who did not yield a round-tripper in six late season starts a year ago. Parra picked up his second win over the Lookouts, his second on the road and his sixth of the season, the most he has won in a season in a Stars uniform since pitching in Huntsville for the first time in 2004.

 

The series continues Monday night when the Stars will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Lookouts? right-hander James Avery. Anyone notice the .899 OPS Heether put up in May? I know he is 25 now but still a guy I like to follow a bit. Doubtful he has a place within the organization, but maybe he can have success to the point where he could be a utility guy somewhere for a team (throw-in on a trade?).

That's three hits today already for Ford...I don't want to see him leave Charleston, but he deserves to go up! That puts him at .346 with 43 runs, 31 RBI, 5 HR and 31 Stolen bases....not a bad 1st half! Listening to the game and Bull just said Darren just ran a ball down running into the wall to make the catch taking away extra bases that in his opinion should be an instant web gem on ESPN...can't wait to see it!

Brent Brewer walked three times today...thats fantastic...i hope he continues to draw walks...he's on pace for 180 or so strikeouts right now, so it would make me feel a whole lot better if he walked more often...

 

Taylor Green is a monster...i have no idea how long he can keep this up, but this is an amazing run..

 

Michale Brantley is a stud...i feel bad for picking on him the entire offseason...his ability to work the count and draw walks without striking out and hitting for a high average is unreal...

 

finall, darren ford...mix that kind of bat with off the charts speed and all star caliber defense...

Win Streak Ends With 4-1 Loss To Tucson

 

NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds had their four-game winning streak come to a close with a 4-1 loss to the Tucson Sidewinders on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

 

The bottom half of the Tucson lineup did most of the damage; the five through eight hitters combined for eight of the club?s 10 hits during an 8-for-16 evening.

 

The visitors grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a pair of home runs against Nashville starter Adam Pettyjohn, who made his Sounds debut in the contest. Tucson second baseman Danny Richar put the visitors on the board with a leadoff solo homer to left, his seventh of the year. Jamie D?Antona finished the inning?s scoring when he turned a 3-2 Pettyjohn pitch into a two-out, two-run homer to left, his fifth longball of the year.

 

Pettyjohn helped reduce the deficit for the Sounds in the bottom of the second when he lifted a two-out RBI single to center on an 0-2 pitch from Tucson starter Yusmeiro Petit. Drew Anderson (2-for-3), who tripled earlier in the frame in his first at-bat since rejoining Nashville, scored on the knock to make it a 3-1 game.

Former Sound Rich Thompson increased the Tucson lead to 4-1 in the sixth when he dropped a two-out RBI bunt single down the first-base line against reliever Joe Thatcher.

 

Petit (6-3) earned his team-leading sixth win for the Sidewinders after allowing one run on seven hits and fanning seven batters over 6 1/3 innings.

 

Chad Harville earned his PCL-leading 15th save of the year after working out of a self-induced jam in the bottom of the ninth. The veteran walked Mike Rivera and Anderson to open the inning to bring the potential tying run to the plate. After striking out Charles Thomas for the first out, Harville induced a game-ending double play groundout from pinch-hitter J.R. Hopf in the youngster?s first career Triple-A at-bat.

 

Pettyjohn (0-1) took the loss in his first Nashville outing after giving up three runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out five batters and walked none during his 70-pitch evening.

 

Laynce Nix finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to extend his hitting streak to five games for the Sounds.

 

The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Monday evening. Nashville right-hander Tim Dillard (3-3, 3.51) will man the bump for Nashville to square off against Tucson right-hander Enrique Gonzalez (2-4, 4.57).

Sound's career is off to poor start

Pitcher allows three early runs in loss

The Sounds dug an early hole and were unable to recover in a 4-1 loss to Tucson at Greer Stadium on Sunday.

 

Starter Adam Pettyjohn gave up three first-inning runs, including two homers, in his Nashville debut.

 

"I think it was a little bit of adrenalin. You've just got settle down after that and keep the game close," said Pettyjohn, who went on to pitch four scoreless innings.

 

He gave up seven hits while striking out five, but Tucson still ended the Sounds' four-game winning streak.

 

Tucson leadoff hitter Danny Richar hit Pettyjohn's third pitch over the left-field wall. One double and two batters later, Pettyjohn, who was promoted from Double-A Huntsville on Sunday, gave up a two-run shot.

 

Meanwhile, Tucson pitcher Yusmeiro Petit (6-3) dominated, finishing with seven strikeouts, three walks and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

 

"Their guy (Petit) threw the ball well, mixed it up," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He kept us off balance."

 

Tucson scored its fourth run in the sixth inning on an RBI bunt by Sidewinders left fielder Rich Thompson, which knocked in D'Antona.

 

What they said: "New team, new atmosphere. You just got to calm everything down." ? Pettyjohn on giving up two home runs in the first inning of his Sounds debut.

New pitcher knocks in only run for Sounds

Pitcher Adam Pettyjohn made his Sounds debut Sunday.

 

The left-hander went five innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs. He also struck out five.

 

Pettyjohn was called up from Double-A Huntsville Friday to fill the spot left by Jose Capellan, who was promoted to the majors.

 

Pettyjohn also drove in the Sounds' only run on a single.

 

Pettyjohn, 29, was 4-2 with an ERA of 4.45 in 11 starts at Huntsville. Pettyjohn struck out 54 batters in 56 2/3 innings while walking just 15.

 

Pettyjohn has played in the Pacific Coast League before. He had 42 appearances with Fresno and Sacramento during 2004 and 2006.

 

Great return: Outfielder Drew Anderson returned to Nashville with a triple in his first at-bat Sunday. Anderson rejoined the Sounds from Double-A Huntsville.

 

He fills the hole created by first baseman Andy Abad, who went on the disabled list Sunday with a sprained wrist suffered in Saturday's game.

 

Anderson finished 2-for-3 and scored the Sounds' only run. Anderson, 25, hit .444 with 11 RBIs in 12 games with Huntsville after he was sent down May 19. Anderson began the season hitting .197 in 36 games with Nashville.

 

Past champs: Tucson and Nashville are the two most recent champions in the Pacific Coast League. The Sounds won the title in 2005, while Tucson won it last year.

 

Nashville holds a 29-25 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1998.

 

No luck: Sunday's game was only the fifth time Nashville has gone into the ninth inning trailing in 29 opportunities at home. The Sounds are 0-5 in those games.

 

Extra credit: The major leagues have been good to former Sound Ryan Braun since he was called up May 24.

 

Five of the third baseman's 10 major league hits have been for extra bases.

 

On Sunday, he had a leadoff double in the third inning against the Marlins.

 

Ahhh, relief: Tucson pitchers Randy Choate and Chad Harville picked up right where starter Yusmeiro Petit left off, allowing no hits over the final 2 2/3 innings, with Harville earning his league-leading 15th save.

 

"We had some chances, but didn't come through," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said.
