Post all star break

Ennder

Was just curious to see the good the bad and the ugly since the all star break and figured I'd share the numbers. This includes stats through the win agains Cincy on 08/18.

Just going to list OPS for hitters and just those with significant playtime.

Braun - 1.048

Fielder - .966

Jenkins - .939

Hart - .772

Graffanino - .743

Hardy - .722

Mench - .683

Hall - .663

Weeks - .567

Counsell - .551

Estrada - .517

Miller - .350

Not really a surprise we have had problems scoring runs in the second half. Three above average hitters and a bunch of sub .700 OPS guys.

While I am not a big fan of ERA its the stat everyone knows the best so I'll list pitchers by it.

Shouse - 2.16

Parra - 3.10

Cordero - 4.02

Linebrink - 4.50

Suppan - 4.58

Vargas - 5.13

Bush - 5.45

Gallardo - 5.79

Turnbow - 5.94

Capuano - 6.26

Wise - 6.35

Spurling - 8.53

Villanueva - 11.17

The only thing I could possibly say about that pitching staff since the all star break would get me banned so I'll just let you all get sick looking at it yourself.

Its extremely hard for me to look at those stats and just blame Yost We've seen almost a complete collapse by the entire team though so maybe he is the one that has to take the fall for that.

Clearly those stats are quite frightening especially in regards to the pitching staff. Obviously it is not all Yosts fault but he deserves more than his share of the blame. The demise of Villanueva is 100% on Yost due to his overuse. You can also see that the team has lost all of its confidence and I blame that partially on Yosts everything is alright attitude. The team has completely fallen apart in every way possible and Yost has to go because of it. This team is way too talented to be playing this poorly over this long a stretch. Its time to turn the page and give Krembals a shot for the rest of the year. As poorly as we have played we are still in the race and heck you never know maybe a new manager could help, it certainly cant get much worse than it has been over this stretch. The bullpen has imploded due to the starters never going more than 5 1/3 innings.

I think this is one of the bigger misunderstandings on the site. Nobody is blaming Yost (meaning holding him primarily responsible) for the collapse of the team. People who want him replaced tend to believe he is a part of the problem (not the whole problem) due to his perceived sub-par managing. Obviously, he doesn't have a tremendous amount of control over an atrocious pitching staff, but his strategies appear tend to push us towards losses during close games.

Also, his handling of certain pitchers (particularly in the bullpen) could very well effect their runs allowed. For example, possibly overusing Cordero and Villanueva earlier in the year have left them somewhat burnt out in mid-August. And things like leaving Linebrink in today to face Valentin will have an effect on the pitching staff's numbers.

You know, when I look at those numbers, the thing that bothers me the most is that I don't have a good explanation for it.

I can understand the bullpen ERAs shooting up. I don't think the bullpen is managed well (specifically repeatedly getting guys up, sitting them down, getting them up) but I don't want to go into a Nedley discussion here--there's enough of that to go around.

I just don't get it. We barely have a starter with an ERA below 5--I know ERA is not a tell all but you know it's not good to see 5+ across the board. When I watch this team and hash through how badly they've collapsed in my mind, I can't come up with a good reason why--a realistic, reasonable explanation. It's really frustrating.

Yep,it's just one of those situations were i usually expect the worst to happen now.

Every leadoff single or walk feels very threatening regardless how big the lead is or who is on the mound.

If we need a hit in a tight game and Prince or Braun isn't up,i have no confidence whatsoever that it will happen.

If we score 3-6 runs early,i start asking myself how we'll manage to lose this one vs thinking we finally can cruise to an easy win.

If Ned or Maddux makes a trip to the mound to talk to the pitcher,i expect the next pitch to get smoked

If Ned makes a move that seems odd,i fully expect it to backfire on him,no blind squirrel finding a nut there

If a righthanded pitcher can get a slider within two feet of the plate,i expect Weeks to swing and look ugly doing so

If a runner is on first and Estrada is up,i expect a first pitch swing and slow rolling grounder that leads to a DP with Estrada out by 10 steps

I expect our hitters to treat talking walks as if they come with herpes

I expect miserable defense

I fear the 6th inning for our starters like Rosie O'Donnell fears an empty doughnut box

I expect Ned to not have a reliever ready quick enough as our starter begins to meltdown in the 6th inning

I don't trust any of our pitchers right now except for an old journeyman lefty with a quirky motion that can't throw harder than 83mph

I certainly never expected to stay winning anywhere near that 24-10 pace, but wow this team has been losing and losing in such ugly fashion,it's hard to believe they were once 24-10.I'm stunned and at a loss to figure out how it all got to this point.Prior to the year, people said pitching would be the strength, but worried where the power would come from. Now we have zero reliable pitching and an offense that launches homers all over the place, but maybe once/twice a week scores a run from a non-homer. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/eek.gif

Jenkins - .939

Yeah, but Jenkins only hits well during meaningless games at the end of the year when there's no pressure. Looks like the end of the year actually means something for once, and maybe he'll finally put that nonsense hypothesis to rest.

I've always liked Jenks. I'd love to see his "useless September" turn into what takes this team to October. That would be a nice story.
