Power 50 (Next update this week, in before draft day Thurs.)

Recommended Posts

I have to agree with Braun taking over #1. With all the concerns about his defense, he's been playing wonderfully down there. I believe yesterday he committed just his 2nd error. Not to mention he has to wear thicker batting gloves or else his skin would melt off from the intense heat of his bat. Its hot.

I like Ford, but I think we can chalk up his high average to a smallish sample. His K's are just as high as last season, and his BABIP is an unreal .523. I just want to see him keep walking.

I was curious to see where Braddock was going to debut, and he's where I would have put him as well. Another month like this one and he could be up another 10 spots, but I think he'll regress at least a little.

Just a suggestion/hope.

Any chance of getting a cloumn on the Top 50 that lists year and round the player was drafted?

Being able to easily see how much of a "bargin" a player was or how a low pick has really "stole the show" and proved the draft experts wrong would be great. I'm sure we all remember the when and where the high picks were taken (Braun, Rogers, Jeffress, etc.), but some of the guys that were taken later or have been around a litlle bit, tend to be a little harder to remember when and where we got 'em.

Is there any organization with a better pair of prospects ready to contribute right now?

Royals could make an argument but one of theirs is up already.

Gwynn still needs 32 at bats to graduate from the Power 50. Could take him months to get that many at bats, or even longer if he gets sent down when Braun is called up.

Ahh...the first Power 50 of the year, nothing like it! Thanks for putting it together.

Some tough love for Hammond, Moss and Nelson but it's so nice to work your way down the list and make cases for virtually each player to be at or above where they're listed.

I just wanted to point out that I have had Braun as the Brewers #1 prospect for a while now, so what he and Yo have done this year didn't really affect my ranking of the two. To me they are really 1A and 1B, with Braun obviously getting the slight edge.

Thanks to pogo for putting it together.

I've had Braun in my top 3...even back when he was behind Krynzel, and I was called names for even suggesting he be ahead of Dave.;)

Like Colby, I've had him at #1 for ages, at least since Rickie, Prince, and Corey were off. Yo's good, but he's a sore arm away from being a decent middle reliever.

TINSTAAPP.

I just wanted to direct people to the DFE thread in the draft forum, as there are some interesting developments among the Brewers DFE class in the last year of the process:

p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...=940.topic

The Brewers according to PG Crosschecker have the third, fourth and fifth best DFE candidates. In the same thread you'll see that the Brewers are expected to sign Lee Haydel (the third best DFE candidate), and there's no reason to believe they won't sign the other two.

So, while it's impossible to predict who the Brewers will draft when trying to think of the names that may be added to the Power 50 come July, the DFE thread is a good way to get a sneak peek at some of the names that could be added to the P50 come June.

I for one am not the least bit worried about Gwynn's lack of power. Plenty of very effective players in the majors right now whose game is based on speed and defense. I never understood the concern, quite frankly, as it has not detered at all his ability to reach the majors.

The problem with his lack of power is that it's a total lack. If he could just carry a .400 slg. percentage, he'd be fine...but TGJ looks like someone who might struggle to slug .360. If that's the case, he'll have to carry an OBP north of .360 to be a decent player, and with no power at all, he's gonna have a hard time drawing walks because the pitchers will just come after him. He's got a lot in common with Willy Taveras and Alex Sanchez---he's got speed and he can hit a single, but those guys career paths should show you why he's not a top five prospect, and also why so many here think he's going to have a hard time breaking into the starting lineup in Milwaukee
