Sept 1st Call ups

brewmann04
According to the Racine Journal-Times (link not available, but it is in print edition), Vinny Rottino will be called up by Saturday's game against Pittsburgh. Rottino did not comment on the call-up after Journal-Times reporters contacted him. Rottino was notified by Frank Kremblas yesterday of the move.

doug melvin stated on brewers.com that between three to seven players will be called up.

chances are nashville's playoff roster could consist of a number of newcomers.

Callups coming: Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said the team had already finalized its plans for Saturday, when rosters expand from 25 to 40 for the final month. "Between three and seven" players will be promoted, all from Triple-A Nashville, Melvin said, including right-hander Carlos Villanueva.

Every Brewers Minor League affiliate but Rookie-level Arizona has already clinched a postseason berth, including Triple-A Nashville, which will head to the postseason for the third straight year. Melvin said the Brewers have been scouring the independent leagues for players to fill the Nashville playoff roster after Sept. 1.

I think initially it will be 5 on 9/1, with a couple more possibly coming later:

CV, Gwynn, Aquino, Spurling, V-Rot on 9/1

If they go seven, I think Nix and a lefty (Pettyjohn or Stetter) added to the 40 when Nashville is done; I really think they could use one more bat, so I think Nix at some point will get the call.

I don't know that they will find enough independent league guys capable of filling the AAA roster... I think it they will more than likely fill the AA or Brevard County roster, and the chain reaction will be like this:

-Narron, Gulin, Thurman, Moss, and a C to Nashville to fill the gaps (perhaps the C a free agent/indy guy)

-Welch, Ryan, Roberts, Cain to Huntsville to fill the gaps

I would imagine that they'll be Rottino, Carlos Villanueva, and Spurling on Saturday. Gwynn, Aquino, and Sarfate will likely be up shortly thereafter. And I'd expect the potential 7th to be either Nix, Jackson, or Pettyjohn. They'll likely call up Pettyjohn and Sarfate in part to take looks for 2008.

From the Nashville Sounds web site (Sounds add Zumwalt and Ray):

To make room for the new players on the roster (Alec Zumwalt and Kenny Ray), Nashville pitchers Zach Jackson and Dennis Sarfate have been placed on the club's temporary inactive list.

I am sure this is related to guys being called up September 1, but this news itself doesn't tell us who they will be.

One possibility is that Jackson and Sarfate may be called up on September 1. Another possibility is that Jackson and Sarfate will be restored to the active roster after a couple of players on the current active roster are sent to Milwaukee on September 1.

"No way Sarfate comes up, he's been simply horrible, 5+ ERA, 2ish WHIP. Either he's hurt or all that talent is wasted inside his head."

Have you looked at Sarfate's stats. In fact I was thinking about starting a thread on him. Since a horrible 2 days at the end of July:

13 IP, 6H, 4BB, 17K

He had a rough July, but great #s in June and August. As a reliever, when you give up 10 ER in 0.1 IP in 2 awful outings your numbers are skewed. Now, I'm not saying he should be called up necessarily, but he has been on a roll of late, and the team probably needs to figure out what they have with him.

If by 5+ you mean 4.45, and if by 2ish you mean 1.73, then you are correct. If you are going to call someone horrible, I think you owe it to them to at least be accurate, especially when it requires so little effort.

As for Dennis being called up September 1, it's not likely. He and Jackson were probably added to the inactive list because they both pitched last night and won't be ready to pitch again until after the first September. The initial call-ups will be made and they'll be re-activated.

However, if Dennis is able to carry his August into September, I could see him coming up after the playoffs complete.

Pardon me if I fail to get excited over Sarfate having a decent handful of innings. He should be dominating AAA, and at this point, is just a guy who throws hard who is underachieving. He's fine minor league free agent fodder, as he still has potential, and nothing more.

I would go with the following. Rottino, Villanueva, Spurling, Stetter, Nix, Aquino, Gwynn

I really like this group, but I think Gwynn and Nix may not be coming up until after the playoffs. I think that Stetter, Rottino, Villanueva, Spurling and Aquino should really be able to help the team though. Look for Stetter to pull a K-Rod for the Angels is 2002.

Per Rotoworld, Brewers are calling up CV, Spurling, Aquino, Nix, Gwynn, and Rottino.

Looks good to me, nothing wrong with a few more bats off the bench from both sides as well as a few extra arms in the pen. The flexability of Rottino as a third catcher and Gwynn's speed are positives.
