Sept 1st Call ups

I don't know if Stetter is ready for the show and like Brian said with AFL coming up for him he could use the break. Spurling was promised a call up? What about Barnwell getting called up? I'm not a huge fan of his bat by any means, but he can field alright...and he can pitch in blow outs which would keep the games a little more fun in blowouts.

Crabbe should've been up awhile ago...instead of bringing Weeks back up, but that's my opinion. I'm just thinking Barnwell can field (can't hit), but the fact that he's pitched this year would give Ned another arm to play with. At least it'd be entertaining instead of watching a starter get lit up or some actual pitcher. Barnwell's slider has some bite to it actually too.

Also, Nix was struggling for most of the year (doesn't have a great avg), but has gone on a somewhat power stretch here over the past two weeks or so. I don't know if he gets called up due to Gross and Gwynn most likely bothing being either still with the Brewers or called up in Gwynn's case. Nelson has played 3B lately, but I think he'd be more of a 1B, PH, or if really needed OF. If it's his last year with the Brewers, why not call him up for PH? It wouldn't shock me to see Sarfate up also due to the fact that he most likely will be looking for a different team in the off-season.

"Spurling was promised a Sept 1 callup"

Are you kidding? Wasting a roster spot again on that guy?

The deserving callups would be:

Rottino: Gives them the flexibilty of a 3rd catcher.

Crabbe: Reward for fine season. Another guy who can play defense.

Gwynn: Obvious

Aquino: Another pen arm and is already on 40 man

Mclung: Why not take a look

Dickey: Since June 1st this veteran has been solid as can be in AAA and earned a token look.

Nobody should be held back for playoffs. They mean nothing.

By September 1st though, they might be the team actually still in a playoff hunt. If we're still close, I say it doesn't matter. I would, however; reward the Nashville team and let them all go get their rings (albeit it on the AAA level). There really aren't too many guys who would make a huge difference with the exception of a few pitchers who we could call up and wouldn't hurt the team.

If Dickey gets a token look, I think DiFelice has to also. They've both played really well...especially since Dickey was put back in the rotation.

Spurling update: Reliever Chris Spurling has cleared waivers, allowing the Brewers to outright him to Triple-A Nashville on Friday.

The club designated Spurling for assignment Wednesday. The move shocked the right-hander, but he said the Brewers had promised him a September callup if he accepted an assignment to Nashville.

"It would be foolish not to accept," Spurling said Wednesday.

Gwynn, Aquino, Spurling, V-Rot, and McClung for sure; Spurling means only one open 40-man slot (unless they move Graffy or Jones to the 60-day), so only one of Bray, Crabbe, Rivera, Dickey, Pettyjohn, Stetter, and Nelson and that probably won't happen until Nashville's season is done (my guess is it's Bray or Crabbe based on need). Long shot for Nix and Anderson, with 6 OFs on the roster with Gwynn, but they're going for it so they may not hold back and bring in the cavalry (I think one of the two will get the call). You never know when a game might go 15 innings, and when the race is this tight you don't want to be caught short-handed.

Gwynn, Aquino, Spurling, V-Rot, McClung on 9/1

Bray and Nix when Nashville is done

The problem is when you call up that many, it causes a chain reaction to fill out the rosters because every team will be in the playoffs. My guess:

-Narron, Gulin, Thurman, Moss, Corporan to Nashville to fill the gaps

-Welch, Ryan, Roberts, Cain, Hopf to Huntsville to fill the gaps

-Bramhall, Mercedes, Pasma, Goetz, Lucroy fill the gaps in A-ball

Does anyone remember back in 2003 when Weeks was drafted 2nd overall and was called up Sept 1st? Is there any chance they might do that with Matt LaPorta this season? Why did they call up Rickie only months after being drafted?

Rickie was initially signed to a major league contract, so there were no 40-man roster implications when they called him up for his AFL tune-up. It was also the case that the Brewers weren't in contention when Rickie was given that deal.

I sure don't see Stetter up. He's been terrible for most of his AA/AAA time, with some recent exceptions. I hope he does well in the AFL and turns into a prospect, but I sure don't expect it.

I don't think Thatcher will have much of a career, and he had fine AA/AAA numbers. Guys that get by on guile like Shouse are rare.
