Game will be made up in twin-bill on Monday

 

HELENA - Sunday's Helena Brewers versus Ogden Raptors game has been cancelled due to weather and will be made up as part of a double-header on Monday evening at Kindrick Field. Game one of the twin-bill will begin at 5:30 pm. There will be a 30-minute break between the two games. Pursuant to Minor League Baseball rules, each contest will be a seven-inning game.

 

Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and all reserved tickets from today's rain out will be honored for any remaining regular season game.

 

Monday will be a Micro Monday at Kindrick Field with two dollar prices for selected micro-brews. All games can be heard on KCAP 1340 AM or www.helenabrewers.net.

Nix Homers Again, Sounds Pound Express 12-5

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Laynce Nix homered for the fifth straight game and drove in four runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 12-5 thumping of the Round Rock Express on Sunday evening at The Dell Diamond.

 

With their fifth consecutive victory, the Sounds (78-50) improved to a season-best 28 games over .500 and reduced their magic number to eight to clinch their third consecutive division title.

 

Nashville's lead over Iowa remains at a season-best 7 ½ games in the PCL American Conference Northern Division, as the Cubs defeated Memphis earlier in the day.

 

Sounds starter Zach Jackson (10-9) ended an eight-start winless stretch by logging his first victory since June 29th. The southpaw allowed five runs on five hits over 6 2/3 frames in becoming the third Sounds hurler to record a double-digit win total in 2007, joining R.A. Dickey (11) and Adam Pettyjohn (10).

 

Every Nashville starter, including Jackson, recorded at least one knock during a 17-hit attack, which matched the club's best effort of the year.

 

Round Rock took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Jesse Garcia home run before the Sounds stormed in front by a 5-1 count with a five-run fourth inning against Express starter Troy Patton, highlighted by a three-run Andy Abad double.

 

Nashville tacked on a run in the fifth on a Jose Macias RBI double before the Express got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the frame against Zach Jackson.

 

Nix homered for the fifth consecutive game by blasting a leadoff solo shot to left in the sixth. The roundtripper, which greeted Round Rock reliever Chance Douglass, was Nix's 20th of the season and gave the visitors a 7-3 lead.

 

The Sounds put the game out of reach in the seventh by plating four more runs against Douglass. Vinny Rottino (3-for-4) started the rally with an RBI double before Nix followed later in the inning with a two-run triple, his first three-bagger of the year. Chris Barnwell (3-for-4) ripped an RBI single to bring home Nix for an 11-3 Nashville advantage.

 

Round Rock pulled within 11-5 in the bottom of the frame against Jackson on an RBI triple by relief pitcher Brian Gordon followed by a Garcia sacrifice fly.

 

Tony Gwynn closed out the evening's scoring in the top of the ninth when his two-out RBI single pushed the score to its final 12-5 count.

 

Tim Dillard (1.1 IP) and Marino Salas (1.0 IP) followed Jackson on the Nashville hill and closed out the contest in scoreless fashion.

 

The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. CT contest on Monday evening. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (10-3, 3.43) will take the hill for Nashville to face Round Rock right-hander Chad Reineke (5-5, 5.29).

Plenty of fun numbers to look at in this one. Laynce Nix with a big day, as he keeps his power stroke rolling by swatting his 20th home run and his first triple on the year. Jackson didn't pitch particularly well, but the Sounds offense carried him, as Jackson added a hit, a run and an RBI himself. Who's that Hunter Pence guy that plays for Round Rock?

Waechter holds Manatees hitless

 

A veteran with 14 wins and 60 Major League games under his belt doesn't often find himself playing in places like Vero Beach, Fla., or Wappingers Falls, N.Y. But it's been a long and winding road for Doug Waechter.

 

Waechter turned in the finest outing of what has been a frustrating season, firing six hitless innings Sunday as the Vero Beach Devil Rays defeated the Brevard County Manatees, 8-2, at Holman Stadium.

 

The 26-year-old right-hander walked two and struck out six before being lifted for Jino Gonzalez, who pitched a perfect seventh before surrendering a leadoff single to Yohannis Perez in the eighth. Eddie De La Cruz allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in the ninth.

 

While losing the no-hitter might have been disappointing to fans and teammates, it wasn't something Waechter (2-4) dwelled on, especially coming back from offseason shoulder surgery.

 

"I was aware that I had it [no-hitter] going, but I also knew that my pitch count was up," he said. "My goal was to get out there and throw as many innings as I could, and that ultimately was six. I was actually lucky in that the coaches upped my pitch count from 70-75 in my last few starts to 80-85 tonight."

 

Waechter went 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA in four starts with short-season Hudson Valley in the New York-Penn League before a promotion to Vero Beach, where things haven't gone as smoothly. He entered his seventh start for the Devil Rays with a 6.83 ERA, though he's noticed significant progress in his past three outings.

 

"It's all part of the process. Obviously, I want to go out there and pitch well, but coming back from any type of surgery isn't easy. It takes time," Waechter said. "I've been feeling much better on the mound in my last three starts. I was just throwing before rather than pitching.

 

"My fastball is getting back to where it was pre-surgery and I've started throwing a cut fastball, which is not only helping me stay consistent with my delivery, but it's also allowing me to get quicker outs."

 

While quicker outs ultimately will lead to more favorable results, Waechter has his eyes set on a much bigger prize.

 

"My goal is to get back to the Major Leagues as soon as possible. If this is the year, so be it, but I'm just going to continue to go out there, show that I'm healthy and just leave the rest up to the team to decide," he said.

 

Sergio Pedroza drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and his team-leading 20th homer. Jackson Brennan also went deep, blasting a two-run shot, his eighth, that sparked a four-run seventh for the Devil Rays (17-36).

 

Patrick Cottrell and Alex Jamieson also had sacrifice flies and Aaron Sisk smacked a two-run double.

 

Brevard County starter David Welch (6-6), who took a perfect game into the eighth against Vero Beach on July 26, allowed four runs -- three earned - on seven hits while fanning three over six innings.

 

Perez and Mat Gamel were the only players to collect hits for the Manatees (28-26), who dropped one game behind first-place St. Lucie in the Florida State League's East Division.

 

Brevard County Box Score:

A pretty blah box score for the 'Tees, as the offense manages only three hits while David Welch and Mike Marksbury had a couple of ugly lines. Yohannis Perez with really the only day worth mentioning, with two hits and a walk, although he did commit an error. A pretty good 8th inning for Kevin Roberts as well, too bad it wasn't in a winning effort.

OK, so let me get this straight.

 

The Manatees, Power, and Helena all have doubleheaders scheduled for Monday.

 

The Arizona Brewers will be completing a suspended game in which they've played only one inning before their regularly scheduled game.

 

No affiliate is idle.

 

The ten games total will shatter the Link Report record, which was eight games, I believe.

Don't be surprised to see the Power washed out again tomorrow. The Midwest has been blasted by rain all weekend, with quite a few areas of heavy flooding, and that rain doesn't look like it is going to let up anytime soon while heading due East.

Nix homers in fifth straight game

The heat wave in the Deep South has nothing on Laynce Nix's bat.

 

Nix homered for the fifth straight game and drove in four runs Sunday to power the Nashville Sounds to a 12-5 romp over the Round Rock Express.

 

The 26-year-old right fielder cranked a solo shot, his 20th, in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

 

"It's hot out here and it feels good," Nix said. "I usually start hitting strong around July and August. You like to finish strong."

 

Nix is 11-for-20 with 12 RBIs during the homer streak. More importantly, the Sounds (78-50) have won all five games.

 

"I believe at least three [of the homers] have been off of left-handers," he noted. "I've honed my approach and I'm relaxing more. I'm seeing the ball well."

 

Nix's streak is one off the Minor League season high; Ryan Royster of the Class A Columbus Catfish homered in six consecutive games from Aug. 5-11. David Smith of the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats is riding a four-game homer run.

 

"I really haven't noticed [the other streaks], but at this part of the season, you have your swing grooved, you've had 300-400 at-bats. It should be kind of natural," said Nix, who batted .241 with 29 homers and 118 RBIs in 250 Major League games with Texas and Milwaukee.

 

In addition to his homer, Nix lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth and delivered a two-run triple in the seventh. The four RBIs matched a season high.

Chris Barnwell went 4-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBIs and two runs scored for Nashville. Andy Abad hit a three-run double and Vinny Rottino went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in another.

 

"We've been swinging the bat great," Nix said. "I think we're more rested than other teams. Our manager, Frank Kremblas, hasn't played us into the ground and we've rewarded him by playing well."

 

Sounds starter Zach Jackson (10-9) allowed five runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings with four walks and two strikeouts. He ended a personal six-game slide with his first win since July 4.

 

Jesse Garcia hit a solo homer and drove in two runs and Wallace Torbert went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Express (55-72), who have lost five straight.

 

Round Rock starter Troy Patton (4-2) gave up six runs on seven hits over five frames, striking out three and walking one.

You had me worried there when you said "ugly line" for Welch - he only gave up 3 earned in 6 IP with no walks, 3K, and 7 hits. That's a quality start!

 

Don't look now - Drew Anderson is up to .280; pretty amazing after that horrible start.
